I Spent a Day in Jamaica's Most Dangerous Slum

Welcome to JAMAICA - one of my favorite countries in the Caribbean. This island is full of life, culture, beaches, and reggae music, and it makes for an excellent vacation destination... However, there's a darker side of Jamaica that exists among the local population. In recent years, the nation has emerged as one of the most dangerous in the Caribbean with gang violence and political turmoil in the slums areas. In this story, I went deep into a dangerous slum called Flankers in Jamaica's second-largest city (Montego Bay) to document street life and see what kind of people live there.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this story - does it change the way you see Jamaica? Let me know in the comments down below!

PS I really love Jamaica! This is my 2nd trip here and when it comes to culture and vibes - there is no better place in the Caribbean. I made this video because I was curious about the real street life, far away from the tourist traps, and I’m really glad I did. Because the people everywhere in this country are amazing!!! 🇯🇲🙏🏼🔥

@@mialovestravel I've traveled to more than 40, including Jamaica and I've found good people and bad people in most of them. This may come as a surprise to many but I would have to rank the Russian people as some of the most hospitable. Many of the Jamaican people (and people of other countries) treated you well as long as you were spending money. I can only assume that most Jamaicans are in contact with tourists more often than most Russians, Bulgarians, Togolese, etc.

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY NO ONE WILL BOTHER YOU1!! THAT IS NOT TRUE! Some men came in my yard in my gated community while my 2 year old was on the veranda, they walked straight into our yard off the street! they asked for money to buy a phone credit that evening our neighbour's house was broken into while she was not at home! a man was also shot in our gated community before we moved in (contracted killing ). Over 4 kids were killed at the start of the year by gun violence in Jamaica , while they were on their way to school in a taxi that got shot up... i guess all these victims are criminals! Jamaicans are not honest and it's so infuriating. THE COUNTRY IS NOT SAFE!!! YOU think people just going around making up how dangerous Jamaica is/

I guess a few people would know him for the controversy over the criticism of the jews and off course slavery. i wouldnt say that the vast majority of trinis really know about him unless if they went on to school, uni or to do more academic studies in the history of slavery or activism in the country. in other words hes known but not well looked into across the nation 👍

As a citizen of Jamaica 🇯🇲. Our country is very beautiful. It's true that there is crime and violence here and at times in some communities more than others. Everywhere in the world there is crime....it's just that it happens behind gated community with wall fence. Crime is crime behind zink or wall fence. Death is death. I have friends in flankers they are beautiful people inside out. The government in our country Can do better but the truth is they care more about themselves. Its us as a individuals that should Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery as None but ourselves can free our mind. The youth can be educated and learn skill in Jamaica however most of them dont because of wrong thinking and they lack motivation. Some of the youth does have good mom and dad but they dont listen. "Jamaica is a nice place fi live ". Next visit to our country come to a regular home and see how they sit at the table and eat and even say their grace just like some of you do. I'm a born American who lived in Jamaica 20 years. I met my wife in Westmoreland and our 14 year old daughter and 9 year old son were born at Cornwall. At some point i was in Flanker every evening buying ganja and juice. If i did not show uo the Flanker people would call to check on me. Solid people there for sure. My family migrated to my home in America last year. I'm now worried about America and the violence there. For the most part Jamaica is a place where problems won't reach you if you are not living a street lifestyle. I actually knew my neighbors in Montego Bay and Kingston. We all looked out for each other always. Jamaica changed me for the better and i supposedly came from the best. I love the country and the people to death ! Jamaica is more than resorts or abject poverty. It’s unfortunate that Jamaica is always dichotomized in this way. There are many ways of life in Jamaica than just those two states. Also, Jamaicans have access to beaches, but it is true that preferred beaches may fall on privately owned resort property or have an entrance fee for the general public.

  • @l.t.3857

As a Jamaican, I agree. There is so much more to Jamaica than the two extremes… But it’s these extreme videos that get views and likes on KZread. They rarely show the middle or upper suburbs… always either the ghettos or the tourist areas. What they are pretty much saying is that, outside of tourism, Jamaica is just one big ghetto, which is so far from the truth. The ghettos are in the small minority… most Jamaicans I know have never even been to the ghettos… only see them on KZread. But let them carry on… most of us know the truth… let them continue to be entertained with the false narratives… entertainment at other people’s expense… that is the current state of the world, sadly.😢

We have so much to offer, from lovely castles, through picturesque nature, mountains, well preserved towns with elegant, historical architecture, some of the most beautiful women, great food, beverages, and much more. There is so much to see, discover, and explore him, but majority of travelers and travel agencies ignore us, just because our country is tiny in size. I´ve seen a number of your videos, and I know that you know that even in the smallest countries, you can find the greatest of hidden gems, and Slovakia isn´t different in this field. I don´t want to force you into doing something you don´t desire to do, but I am just tired of people almost always turning a blind eye to my country, for being tiny in size, population, stereotypes, or not having a metropolois with at least 1 million inhabitants...

It's disgusting that the Jamaican government won't let Jamaicans on their own beaches I couldn't imagine that happening I'm so disgusted by it😢 good job Drew and I love the video

There are free beaches in Jamaica… the government is aware of the complaints, and is in the process of creating more. For obvious reasons, not all the beaches can be free… there needs to be upkeep. One of the best free beaches and parks is right in Montego Bay… I think it’s called Heritage something… I remember when it was opened during the pandemic… google it.

Not picking up for the government but that statement is not exactly true. Google Harmony beach Jamaica. There’s beaches right around the island. I do agree that quite a bit and maybe the best part of the beaches are taking over but it is not true that Jamaican’s can’t go on their beaches. 🙂

@@mitsysimkelle2325These people just love taking on problems that don’t even exist. Jamaicans who know Jamaica, and have lived there, keep telling them it is not true that Jamaicans cannot access the beaches, but they keep spreading lies. They like to feel that they are peoples’ saviors throughout the world. You can go to the eastern end of Jamaica, for instance, and just walk to the beach… it’s free… there is no one there collecting money. I’m especially referring to the parish of St. Thomas, where my family is originally from in Jamaica. And as you mentioned, there is a beautiful public beach and park right there in Montego Bay… yet they want to continue losing sleep over this… a nonexistent “problem” that exists only in their heads.

@@mitsysimkelle2325This is the third time responding… they keep deleting my comment because they don’t want the world to know that there are free, public beaches in Jamaica.😂😂 I decided to google Harmony Beach Park, as you recommended, and it clearly states that it is a “FREE, public access” beach in Montego Bay. These people are so disingenuous… lying on the government… so sad.😢

FLOWER GIRL💖💚🧡🌱🌷🌻🌺 I want to garden with her. Style is intense too. I believe the earring pain too, because she has many, and when I wear bulkier ones myself, I feel it after a few days, especially sleeping with them on. I don't know if coconut husk fiber is being actively used and diverted for horticultural purposes in Jamaica, but it is the greatest gardening resource and soil ingredient for soil-structure. Beautiful people, and yes Flankers is beautiful too. Drew you are a badass, thank you for traveling, loving, and sharing your adventures/work.
