i quit social media for 100 days, this is what i learned...

Ойындар

quitting social media was one of the hardest but one of the best experiences of my life. you might just want to try it too... i decided to go without these apps for a full 3 months (100 days sounds better for a title) and it really changed my perspective on a lot of things.
if you like this kind of content, every like, comment, and sub means the world to me. id love to keep making videos like this one.

Dude, I legit almost got emotional when you started to describe how it felt to become immersed in a book. I was an avid reader in elementary/middle school, and often mourn how smart and hopeful reading made me feel. A few months ago I did start to visit my local library, ended up reading a few full-length books. The mental journeys I went on were so awesome once I finally got my brain to let go of the need to scroll. It’s deadass magical, and way better for you than any drug. (And books can’t give you a panic attack)

Also, I did actually do a semi-version of this recently; I took a 2-week break from my main Instagram account. Which sounds irrelevant, but all I used it for during that time was to message some family members once in awhile. Since I didn’t yet have tiktok at that point, my screen time dropped DRASTICALLY. I was at around 7-9 hours a day- pretty damn bad, and it went down to about 3-4. I felt less pressure to post, less stress about my content doing good numbers (I’m an artist), and I started to find better ways to funnel my boredom into, like working on my various ongoing creative projects. It wasn’t cold turkey, but the break really did help.

I quit social media in November and it's been a fascinating experience. I still use Discord to keep in touch with my friends, and KZread quite a bit, but besides those two, I quit all but cold turkey - I only open Twitter or TikTok when someone sends me a link directly and I never scroll. The hardest part to clear is the sheer boredom of the amount of unused time you suddenly have. But once you get used to that, and start to settle back into a routine that doesn't include scrolling endlessly through a mindless sludge of internet nonsense, it feels very freeing. I'm not a slave to my phone like I used to be, and I don't think I could ever bring myself to go back.

Wow your comment section exploded on this one. Hopefully I'm not too late to the party :) I'm tackling this topic for a long time now because it's something I really wanna change. I got to a point now where I only install insta like once per week, mainly to check new announcements of musicians like new releases or concerts. Insta, in my social bubble, really died out tbh, no one is posting pictures anymore and I muted stories of 90% of the people a long time ago. This is truly the biggest time waste imo. The only stuff people post are food they're eating and places they're been. It's hilarious. I'm 26 and never even downloaded TikTok before. And this has to be one of my best decisions in life. And I'm not even joking. Your example was perfect: There is just so much useless content floating around and your filling up your brain with so much junk which makes everything else harded to do and less fun. Like reading a book and going for a walk. And you don't even remember anything an hour later. It's so embrassing. But don't be mistaken. If you're not careful you just change one platform for another and continue the brain rot addiction. Which happened to me. Now I'm a bit stuck on YT shorts which is sometimes even worse because there is just so much more trash and the algorithm is just wild. So I'm fighting on this front now. Did you change something after the 100 days or did you fall back into the social media hole? Any rules for yourself for the future? :) Man I could go on and on about this topic. Sorry for the long comment

i love reading long comments its really no worries, i changed a lot after this experiment actually. i still find myself scrolling before bed sometimes but if i lay down in bed at 11pm its not long until im ready to fall asleep at like 11:30pm haha, i dont feel like i need to use the phone in the morning anymore and i just get up and start my day, so the more stuff i have to worry about like work or food it feels like i dont have time for scrolling much anymore now that im worried about other things. social media is not the best thing for us, but i really see no problem with using it as long as it doesnt control you

For whatever strange reason, I lack the urge to go on most social media platforms, so I sort of live this daily. I think it’s because I’m a textbook introvert - I have very few friends or acquaintances yet don’t feel lonely at all (I often feel closer to oversaturated with people). This removes the major reason most people check social media: to be social. I also don’t have a TV or watch stuff like Netflix, so the only real source of media / entertainment I use is KZread. What I notice differs in my life to most people is indeed this concept of FOMO and constantly being engaged with other people’s business. I tend to have no idea about new memes or even news unless it’s so big that I hear of it indirectly. Turns out though, everything directly important to your life will get to you eventually. You’re only missing out on the stuff that doesn’t really matter. I’m certainly not “free”, however. Your point about suddenly finding yourself doing other stuff on your phone is very relatable to me. Even without social media other than YT, I’m still clearly addicted / attached to my phone. A lot of this is ok, in my opinion, because I watch a lot of educational content (maths, history, whatever) so I feel like I’m learning a lot. Even still, I think about 50-75% of my time on YT is a waste, and my screen time is also at 6+ hrs a day. My sleep schedule is also a wreck, but that’s been an issue since I was a child so I can’t say how much of it is due to phone use. Going for walks is absolutely wonderful for your mental health! I’ve been trying to do it more recently and it’s always pleasant. I’d also suggest exercise in general, it’s literally hardwired to release dopamine. I have always hated sports and exercise, but doing even the most lightweight stuff still makes me feel better. Also “lightweight” really does mean lightweight - I can’t even do proper push-ups lol. I’m in good health but my strength sucks because I’m so sedentary. Based on what you said here, I might try to ditch my phone for a while. That feels similarly “difficult” as you described your process being, so it seems like a comparable challenge. I hope it will let me figure out to what extent I was actually learning from my YT videos, and to what extent it’s just procrastination. Perhaps this is a bit long and ramble-y, but whatever I’ll leave it as is. I’m glad the experience was pleasant, and you’ve certainly inspired me / piqued my interest into my own digital hygiene. Have a nice day!! Edit: oh also a tip for people trying to avoid YT shorts - on the PC website version (not mobile app) you can click “not interested for 30 days” on the shorts bar. Doing this _also hides shorts in recommended on your mobile app if you use the same account!!_ It’s really annoying to redo it every 30 days, but it’s better than nothing. You still see shorts in your subscription feed, but that’s usually fine imo bc it’s a limited amount and usually stuff I actually want to see.

Yeah, I’ve tried to quit quite a few times now, as I feel youtube, which is the only platform aside from Discord that I use, I feel like it’s causing me so much harm, mentally. I always watch negative things like oh this person is stupid, this girl cheated on this guy or this girl dated several, this person thinks everyone is racist, etc. Guess what, I’m now left with anxiety so bad my body goes into fight or flight mode, like physical symptoms, I cannot sleep most nights cuz I think my boyfriend will leave me, cuz it feels like after probably about a whole year of watching almost only such videos, my mind is now trying to make me believe in any way that I am like those people I hear about and I just feel horrible about it. Trying to recover basically, so far so good. But really I didn’t even need other social medias, youtube is enough already, considering the content I watch. Ig my views are messed up and along with a pretty bad past, it is just a recipe for disaster that I didn’t realize until it was too late. And before the anxiety, I started hating people beyond much, I started feeling so like.. I am never a person to judge, but I started to judge people more, so anxiety or not, it’s never good. This is like candy, literally. And I’ve been binge-eating every day. Metaphorically. Oh not to mention I can’t focus well, could be yt as I’ve heard from well. KZreadrs. But yeh could also just be me. Well Imma just keep trying, I know I’ll get through this. And if anyone else is in the same boat as me, good luck my friend :3

None of them were actually their when it happened and they all saw it online. It was what made me get back on Snapchat and twitter. It's just like I lost my friends for awhile
