I quit my job and moved to seoul | life in korea & why I left my teaching job

I've been wanting to share this news for so long!
Last March I officially left my teaching job in Danyang and moved to Seoul to attend Seoul National University's Korean Language Institute. Let's talk about why I moved, some details about language school, and a mini-vlog of my life in Korea~
Chanel Updates:
My new upload schedule will be Tuesday mornings
I'm going back to Canada for a few weeks to visit my family before classes start. I'm not sure if I will be able to access an editing program there, so I might miss a few weeks of uploads

    I’m not sure if this will help you with your goals but Canadians can live in Korea for up to 2 years on the working holiday visa and you can work full time and go to language school on that visa.

    That's so exciting. These intensive language programs typically just cram you with grammar. They also try to cram you with vocabulary but if you're not Asian it's kind of a lost cause. The teachers know that but it's still really frustrating for the students. I think the big challenge for people that graduate from these programs is not forgetting all the advanced grammar before their vocabulary catches up so they can actually use it. I've been studying Korean for about 5 years now as a hobby. I got to study for 3 weeks at LEXIS Korea in Gangnam a year and a half ago and I'm going back in a month for 2 weeks. (I know it's so short it's a joke compared to your stay) I'm afraid they might place me into the same level as before even though I personally feel like my Korean improved, I don't know if a placement test will show that 😅😅 (edit - they put me in upper beginner last time)

    If you feel like you've improved, I really hope they put you in a higher level! I'm not sure about your specific school, but I've heard that some schools can kind of be persuaded into putting students into a higher level. If they put you in the same level, you could try contacting them and say that you want more of a challenge. It might work!

    @@strawberrykimcheekorean I hope so. I’d like to be in a class where the students can speak even if it’s really basic. You never know what you’re going to get with language classes. I remember taking Japanese at a school in Shinjuku and they put me in this N2 (upper intermediate) class. Which seemed a good match. But all the other students were Chinese. They could read and write Japanese well but couldn’t say anything except sugoi desu ne!

    What are the costs involved with the move, classes and rentals etc?

  • @strawberrykimcheekorean

    @strawberrykimcheekorean

    Ай бұрын

    I already lived in Korea so my moving costs might be a bit different, I basically paid a moving company 500,000 won to move me (that's including taking apart and rebuilding furniture and a few hours of driving across the country). SNU language school costs 1,800,000 won per term, with 4 terms in a school year. For my housing I'm currently paying about 700,000 won for a two room apartment including utilities with a 10,000,000 won deposit that will be given back after I move out, but there are a lot cheaper options for housing if you get a smaller apartment or stay in the school dorms. I hope this helps!
