South Korea's expense on luxury per capita is the highest in the world. There is a huge gap in wealth, but everyone wants to live high profile life even if they can't really afford it. Also, salary is one thing and whether you have (parents) money is another thing. There is also the term "car poor", people go for the luxury car even when they are not able to afford a decent place to live. Anyway, owning a decent house in Seoul is unachievable in a life time with 36k per year, so they put all their money on the car because it is rather achievable.

Umm.. I'm Korean myself, but in Korea, the salary is quite low and people are usually way overqualified for their job and underpaid for their job as well. The cream of the crop lands a job in the big market cap companies like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and they start with a good starting salary of around 60,000~70,000 USD or you get into investment banking companies or the financial industry and make around the same. The competition to these top tier jobs are insane. For example, I graduated in a top 10 business school in the US with a 3.6/4.0 GPA with many awards and extracurricular activities and I was rejected from those jobs. I eventually just settled for a decent foreign company and I started with a $50,000 salary. Also, I want to add in the fact that even with this salary, the tax rate is really high in Korea, so almost 30-40% will go to tax and there isn't much left for us to take home. The housing prices are insane here and the average cost of necessity items like groceries are really high compared to that of other countries like US. So, even with a good job, it is almost impossible to live an average lifestyle here without a family fortune. Especially because Korea is a very competitive and hostile environment, the pressure for you to look good (great fashion, hairstyle, luxury goods, exercising, playing golf, going to take care of your skin, etc.) is insane and if you don't do these certain things, you would feel left out or even ridiculed about. So, living in Seoul is really tough if you don't have a top-tier job, if you don't look visually appealing, if you don't have a good amount of assets. I am still fortunate to be surviving, because I received $2,000,000 apartment from my parents and a car from them as well, so I don't have a lot of pressure to be saving all of my salary and can settle to do some hobbies and relax. Despite this, I wouldn't even say I am in the upper class and feel like middle class.

@@Patrick_OBrien Oh, no need to be sorry about anything! My place isn't that luxurious or that spacious, but the location is near center of Seoul, so it's just pricey. I can help answer your questions from a realistic point of view if you'd ask. I'm not exactly sure what you would know about the Korean social mobility. For my case, my condo was paid full by my parents, so I don't have any of my salary going there. I spend 40% of my salary on my daily expenses and roughly split the rest half half, so 30% in stocks and 30% in savings.

Great interview as always, but it isn't accurate to take 10M KRW and say $10,000. or 800,000 KRW and say $800. There are many services/products that are priced so differently that the "experience of spending 1,000 KRW" is NOT equal to the experience of spending $1 USD. And for most viewers of this video, their main takeaway will be "wow, this guy is making more/less than me doing the same job. And he is living in Korea!" when in fact he's making 30% less than a US counterpart.

That marketing chick should put some suave on those natural lips of hers🙄. Young people in Korea don't make squat in income, if they live a luxury lifestyle it's because their parents have money. My wife is from Korea and we live in the US, we are very well off and there is a difference between those who try to look like they belong in the upper wealthy class and those who actually are. I just got back from a 3 week visit to Korea, I saw a great deal of people wasting money trying to appear like they were something they were not, a very American way of doing things. Kinda fake it until you make it, but of course faking you have money and are successful is the easiest path to not having money and being successful. My wife is well known for under dressing, going car shopping looking like she is poor. She drives an Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, but she would never car shop letting them know this. The only way you will see she has money is if you actually know what to look for beyond material stuff. I like my material stuff, my cars and watches, designer bags, but sometimes it's better to go stealth.
