I painted ONLY with a Toothpick, here is WHY

Ойын-сауық

I paint a warhammer miniature with the spatula technique. A 40k space marine will get painted only using a toothpick. Inspired by oil painting on canvas with a spatula. The space marine painted is a reiver with blood angels colors.

I use a mix of vallejo and citadel colors. The base color is vallejo glossy black and mephiston red from citadel. The highlight color is vallejo buff.

I used to paint minis with a toothpick when I was a kid but we were poor and I was lucky to get the minis and some paints. It was good for stippling and going along edges as you point out. Definitely worked better with black undercoat as its hard to get to those tight nooks and crannies but when working with white, I would glob on darker paints, wait a few moments, then wipe them off. Kind of what people do with oils now.

I am surprised that so many people have painted with toothpicks before. I have to agree, without the black undercoat the result would have looked disappointing.

@@Paint_Quest Painting with toothpicks/needles seemed really popular 20 years ago or so. That was when I first got miniatures and I've heard about people doing it. Needles were used to paint details like eyes, teeth, etc.

Thanks for putting up this video! The technique you showed with the toothpick for edge highlights is actually a good alternative if you don't have the expensive fine tip brushes. Also the toothpick (if you reduce their thichkness with a hobby knife) can be used to paint hard to reach places for already assembled minis which you don't want to cut.

Glad you liked it! I had some people respond with this Tipp (to sharpen the toothpick). I didn’t think about that trick when I made the video, this would have made the result much better I think!

That’s an interesting use! Didn’t think about doing technical patterns with it. It works better than a brush for it?

What a crazy idea to even try! The end result looks shockingly good, all things considered.

When i start with the Hobby round about 25 years ago, my gaming friends all paint with needles. Today i prefer the brush.
