Matt, I’ve already locked down the “beginner set.” Highlights include: crooked shears, a bread knife for cutting things, a 1995 E36 M3 dual sided tiny screwdriver - includes enough rust that it’s difficult to switch from flat head to Phillips, a Lowe’s special 3/8” ratchet, and finally, a BFH.

As a professional auto technician, there will probably never come a time where I buy a Sonic tool. Mainly because I’ve already accumulated $50k+ of tools from Snap-On and the other truck based brands. But I am interested in what kind of organizational solutions you come up with. I recently moved to a new shop where I have a fixed workstation and the drawers are a bit restrictive. So I’d like to see what you come up with to maybe help my layout a little better.

I appreciate the clarity on why you would never by a Sonic tool. Because you've already spent thousands with another brand. You may have a different response if you were a brand new tech out of school trying to build your first set for less than what the trucks charge. At $50k, you helped put a truck-brand owner's kid through college.

Or even layouts to custom laser cut foam to a variety of tools so you could have a sonic wrench and a husky ratchet in the same foam

For those hating in the comments, think about this. I'm sure you (or I hope) you like to see "small businesses" succeed, yeah? Especially one that's owned by someone you like (assuming that's why you watch his videos). That's LITERALLY what you're watching here. You're not watching someone flaunt their money for no reason. You're watching someone put their money back INTO their business. If he stops investing in his ideas like this, you'll then be watching a small business deteriorate and die. Stop looking at this through an envious point of view...start getting motivated or at least respect what he's building! 👍

I think 98% of the people watching this understand what I'm doing here. I see an opportunity in a great product line to provide value to the world. Take something really complicated, make a significant investment in acquiring their product, then sort through it organizing the solutions that I would want them to create. That is why I'm confident enough to take the risk and taking the time to do this. My wager is that I'll be correct when all the dust settles.

I’m extremely happy with my Sonic tools. There’s just something special about opening a drawer and seeing all those wrenches, or sockets, or screwdrivers lined up like that. It was hard at first to pull the trigger cause I’ve never really spent that kind of money on a tool set before but now that I have them and used them for a while I can’t wait to buy my next set. I kinda feel like a jerk for buying them straight from Sonic instead from Matt being that he’s the one that turned me onto them but some of the kits I wanted weren’t listed on the OG website. Hopefully when he’s done with this project he will have created more kits that fit my needs and I can honor the source. If it helps Matt, I did tell them that Obsessed Garage was the reason I was making the purchase. 🤷‍♂️

Snap on & Mac both allow you to order custom foam inserts, you can send them the part numbers of your tools and they will do custom layouts at a size that fits your drawers. More work to start with but you get much better quality. I understand getting a sales agreement with Snap On and Mac might be next to impossible but you've always been about chasing the best products regardless of costs. Same with Lista cabinets, a much better product than Sonic and are used industry wide in places likes Rolls Royce, Siemens or GE.

I've seen them. They are really bad. I really dislike that format. You end up with a ton of wasted space. In order to make proper foam inlays, there has to be tons and tons of layout changes and adjustment. You don't get that with this way of making drawer layouts. I've been down the path before. I abandoned my Lista dream when I got my packing station equipment. Fit and finish was not great, customer support was not going to work well with our clients, and I ended up with a bucket of extra bolts and had to source my own sizes to assemble. There is more that goes into this than picking the most expensive or heaviest gauge. I'm looking for functional excellence.

The quality of the tool is subjective - everybody has their own definition. Strength tests show Sonic is actually better than most. As for Lista vs. Sonic, just looking at specs, MSS+ is a better cabinet than Lista. For tools or cabinets, Sonic’s distribution model is light years ahead of the competition, especially for the high-end DIY guy. Sonic is used by BMW, Porsche, VW, MB, Audi, GM, Bosch, Massey-Ferguson, Bobcat, Lockheed, American Airlines, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Armed Forces, the list goes on. Most of these companies swapped from a tool truck brand.

Nothing like organization when you have the time and having the full tool rollout is something to be envied. I can’t really endorse this type of random buying that’s not what a normal person does they don’t go out and buy a complete tool line and hope they find a use for it just because it fits their drawers in their tool box. Function is beautiful to me if I have a use for a tool it finds a home in my toolbox. Now if you would have went the other route and said hey tool manufacturer give me every hand tool I’ll need to work on every car brand that sees this lift. you would have drastically have a change in the tools provided and be confident that the majority of those tools are gonna be able to accomplish the task at hand. Matt you have a responsibility to your viewers and your patrons to do the right thing and this needless buying looks bad as a leader idol and mentor of many. I’m not hating your obsession. I love your content you create just be mindful of the steps you take cause they are being followed.

Goonzsquad is your benchmark here? Just because some takes apart a pile of crap and puts a pile of crap back together doesn't mean it's done well. There is much more broad appeal in the dream that you can get a car for 50 cents at a junk yard and turn it into gold for $1,000. I'm here to tell you that doesn't happen. I take nice things and make them nicer. In all aspects of life that will always be superior to the junky version. It's like saying someone that works hard as a janitor that dropped out of high school and made bad choices is superior the the honor student that worked his face off to become a doctor. If I'm going to buy tools, I want all of them. Just like I'd rather work in an air conditioned oversized garage rather than trying to squeeze into a tiny sweat box with junk everywhere. Wouldn't that be superior?

@@ObsessedGarage Your comment addressed nothing of what I said. Nothing on there says anything about the Goonzquad quality does it? That was just an example showing how most automotive jobs can be done with a standard tool set. My point is in the first sentence which you totally ignored. But since you know it’s true that’s probably why you ignored it and went way off about something that was never in question. Whether Goonzquad does crap job or puts crap back together has nothing to do with tool usage which again still stands and I’ll repeat my point . . 90% of people who wrench on their cars will never use 90% of those tools.

Nothing against Matt but right now it's just hard to see someone spending like crazy. $100 keychains, he dropped that spoon mirror and was just like I'll order another set. It's just unrealistic for me right now, but seriously more power to him, he really made it.

It's a hobby on steroids. I read your comment and think you must have hated the kid who had better toys than you when you were growing up. Should Matt make a video about picking up tools at a flea market because someone can't afford a matching set? Everyone is responsible for their own destiny. Imagine if Matt's parents gave up on life back in the trailer park because their boss's homes were too big.

I never said I was hating on him, wanted him to do poorly or want his business to fail. Nor did I say he shouldn't better himself. All I am saying is he was much more relatable - to me - when he was washing cars in his driveway w his Griots stuff & not in the business of selling products. That's it. It's just a much different "channel" now than when he started. That was my point. Nothing more ; nothing less. And no, I never hated on the kids that had better toys because I was actually one of those kids and I feel very fortunate to have grown up that way....
