This show has an alternate timeline that splits somewhere near the end of WW2. And in the first scene actually takes place in October 2077. Very retro futuristic.

The time line splits specifically due to scientist focusing on nuclear energy instead of the transistor, the transistor leading to the development of smaller and smaller technology in our timeline. In the fallout world nuclear energy powers everything, and aesthetics and fashion also became stagnant and never changed from the 50’s. So everything looks like the 1950s however the beginning of the show starts in 2077.

Timeline for context: The End - 2077 Fallout 76 - 2102 Fallout 1 - 2161 Fallout 2 - 2241 Fallout 3 - 2277 New Vegas - 2281 Fallout 4 - 2287 Fallout TV - 2296 All the games are there own isolated story following a new character who you create. Fallout 2 is connected to the first game by your main character being the grandchild of the protagonist from Fallout 1 with both games being set in California. Fallout 3 moves to the East Coast, Capital Wasteland around D.C. So it's disconnected from the first two games by location and narrative. Fallout New Vegas moves back to the West Coast and has mentions of events from the first two games, more so Fallout 2 as that's more recent in the timeline. Also features factions from the first two games along a few returning characters who have longer life spans. And finally Fallout 4 moves back to the East Coast set in the Commonwealth, also known as Boston. This game is set 10 years after Fallout 3 and features a few characters along with factions and mentions of events with how close Boston and D.C is to each other. The Fallout TV show is set in California and is it's own original story with new characters, locations etc. But as it's set in California alot of the lore and history has it's origins in the first two games along with New Vegas.

The sci-fi film, "A Boy and His Dog" (1975) was the major inspiration for the Fallout games. It was also a major influence for the "Mad Max", "Road Warrior", and "Book of Eli" films. Other nuclear Doomsday films include, "Miracle Mile" (1988), "The Divide" (2011), and "Testament" (1983). "12 Monkeys" (1995) is a good biological doomsday film. As is "Outbreak" (1995), and "Contagion" (2011). The recent sci-fi-mystery TV series "Silo" is about a large community of people living inside a huge Silo. No one knows who built it or why. But the air outside is poisonous. It stars Rebecca Ferguson from the Mission Impossible, and Dune films.

I wrote this for context since the show doesn’t explain the historical background: The Fallout universe consists of an alternate timeline that split from our own timeline after WW2. The simple word to describe this setting is ‘retrofuturism’. A time where the transistor was never invented and vacuum tubes continued being used, and atomic power was used in every manner, from nuclear-powered cars to robots, or simple kitchen equipment. Historical context for you to understand better: The beginning of the show is set in October 23rd 2077, the day the Great War happened which is the catalyst of the Fallout universe. But let’s go back a few years. By 2052, important resources such as petroleum and uranium became scarce and so the Resource Wars began between the European Commonwealth and the various Arab nations in the Middle East. Other nations quickly followed suit such as the US declaring war on Mexico and annexing Canada into its territory for easier access to Alaska’s precious oil fields, in case of a land invasion done by China (Side note here: In the Fallout universe, the main world players are the US and China; the USSR became a very weak nation after WW2 in this timeline). After decades of fighting, it was deemed that Alaska became the last place left on earth for petroleum extraction. And so in January 2066, China finally invaded Alaska, starting the Sino-American war that would end with the liberation of Anchorage and thus, an American victory by the start of 2077. After a couple months of relative peace, on October 23rd of 2077, that would change, following the Great War (the beginning of the show happens here). In only 2 hours, every superpower that controlled nuclear weapons began bombing each other, leaving nothing but destruction and a devastating nuclear winter that will last for decades.

It's an alternative universe where humanity never discovered the transistor, so they're stuck with older tech like electron tubes while making progress in other areas (far beyond our own). That's why you have this retro futuristic 1950s look in the intro, which is basically the end of the world due to MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction. Oh and cowboys weren't a thing in the middle ages. lol I address some questions / points from the episode but keep in mind that there's things that I cannot address due to spoilers (there's some context related double meanings or things that are seemingly unclear or irrelevant but make sense once you know)... 13:53 Vault 32 is where the "husband" was coming from. They, Vault 33 and Vault 31 are all next to each other in a line, so they're connected. 16:42 It's a stim-pack, the standard healing item in the games. 20:39 He put her in a safe spot. 20:54 I think you missed the importance of this sentence. The raider, from the outside, somehow knows her mother, from people who lived all their lives locked up underground within the vault. 21:53 Just bullying. 22:34 The basic background lore for the Brotherhood of Steel, which may or may not be considered a minor game spoiler, is that they're basically a fascist military dictatorship. They're one of the most dangerous factions in the game due to how established they are, gobbling up all the pre-war tech they can find. 23:36 It's how Maximus joined the Brotherhood. 24:05 Dane got anointed to become the squire of knight Titus and go out in the wild with him. The Brotherhood has this Templar like image to them, hence the Latin names. The armors they wear are military combat exoskeletons from before the bombs dropped and only their knights can wear them. 25:05 This was their first. 26:36 She put one of the tranquilizers into his hand. 30:10 No, he's saying he's willing to die for the Brotherhood. 35:00 Yes. Ghouls (again, potentially a minor game lore background spoiler) are mutants that got heavily irradiated but survived. Ghouls have very strong regenerative powers and radiation resistance, but go feral eventually (think of 28 Days Later type zombies) if they don't consume Rad-Away regularly (a drug that removes radiation, likely what was in the IV bags feeding him when he was buried to keep him "sane"). The show is definitely very graphic, just like the games. Same with the dark humor.

Now you are young, to those of us growing up during The Cold War that intro is what we feared would happen- every day. But we lived our lives. When I teach my The History of The Cold War classes, I always start by showing them a five minute video of nuclear explosions with eerie music, to make your generation understand what it all was- and what you will have to get used to again with Putoloni's sabre-rattling (though he is too much of a coward to do it). During the Cold War, the USSR was planning to open the war by dropping 600+ merely on my little Denmark. The game is set in an alternative timeline, where the transistor was never invented, so everything used vacuum-tubes like early computers. And thus the timeline starts diverging from ours in the year after WW2, and progress is generally much slower. But there is also no Cuban Missile Crisis, Long Island, etc, and no reckoning with its past, so the US carries on in a sort of Truman-Eisenhower Superamerica with nuclear powered cars, etc. But in the 21st century fossil fuels and other resources starts running out, and The Resource Wars starts; where Europe, Africa and The Middle East is torn apart, and China invades Alaska to get the last remaining oil resource on the planet. And in 2077... Boom. And oh yea, the US turns authoritarian semi-Fascist, a bit like Starship Troopers. Anyway, think of the game and series as set in a sort of retro-futuriatic post apocalypse, IE a future as imagined in the fifties, but then add a nuclear exchange of superpowers. In the games you find all those tragic and dark stories as you explore the Wasteland, the series show them, but both do a very good job of what good SciFi should; holding up a dark mirror to humanity- and with Fallout it is really dark.

A shelter that once closed could not be opened due to radiation. Now the bomb has dropped and someone is trying bring themselves and others into a shelter that would not support the extra people. Knowing this would you stop these people or would you let them in knowing it would result in the eventual deaths of everyone including your family?

There's an old Twilight Zone episode from the 1950's. I forget the title, but its about a bank worker who absolutely loves to read books. So one day on his lunch break he typically goes into the bank vault to read his favorite books. But on one particular day, a nuclear bomb hits his city and kills everyone except him. Now he is free to read as many books as he wants.....or is he? There was another episode about a woman who had the ability to freeze time. One day during a nuclear missile attack, she freezes time. The missile attacking her city is frozen in mid-air right before it strikes. But so is everyone else frozen in time. She could unfreeze time so she could be with her family, but that would also unfreeze the missile. Thus her family remains frozen forever. Again, I forget the episode title.

We have 107 million more inhabitants. 27 countries, 24 official languages and no, we do not need a passport, we can travel and work freely in other countries. Our pension is calculated from all the countries in which we worked. For example, we had to make road signs the same for all countries. Because you can't write a speed limit of 50 in 24 languages on a road sign. Is this a cultural difference in the US? Everyone must learn English. We do not have to.

The opening scene takes place in the year 2077 but is set in an alternate time line where it is indeed still the 1950'ties. That's why they use 1950ties music all through the show. The people in the vault still have the same 50-ish attitude their ancestors had when they went in to the vaults.

@@InnaSoloTV If you have seen Downton Abbey and liked it, then you should watch Belgravia where Ella is one of the cast members. It took two episodes of Fallout for me to remember where I had seen her.

More than three. The world was reforged by the inferno of nuclear fire. Mountains were levelled and remade anew. The world had learned the consequences of unchecked conflict. And still the factions of the waste compete, fight, and kill. Because war... war never changes.
