"I Neglected My Loving Family" True Stories of Addiction

Paul was raised as a Mormon in Mesa, Arizona. He was not raised around drugs or alcohol because it was against their religion. He was raised with everything any kid could ever want. He started to be molested at a very early age. This caused him to always question his sexuality. As a teenager, Paul enjoyed skateboarding and partying.
Paul didn’t think that he had a problem with drugs and alcohol and thus wasn’t able to get clean. He thought that as long as he was feeling good there was no reason to not do it. Paul thought that the problem was with everyone else, not with him.
Paul eventually found that his prescription pill addiction was too pricey for him to maintain. Instead of continuing with his pill use, he turned to heroin to get his fix. It was far more affordably and very readily available to him. Within a few months, he started shooting up heroin.
He moved to Chicago to try to get clean. Dope was even easier to get once he moved. He was only clean for less than a year before he was deep into addiction again. He started doing a lot of illegal activities and taking advantage of his dad in every way possible. His parents had enough and eventually he was kicked out of his apartment. On September 29, 2010, he decided to go to a detox facility because he had no way to get high again. He didn’t want to get sick so he figured that was his best option.
When he finally went to the detox facility, he was determined that he didn’t want to go through withdrawals. He went in with the intention of using again in the future, but just didn’t want to feel the withdrawal symptoms that come with detoxing. He met someone working in the facility who introduced him to Alcoholics Anonymous.
This caused him to earnestly start his road to sobriety. After getting a sponsor and working the steps, Paul was able to get and stay away from drugs. In treatment, Paul rebuilt his life and was able to get everything back on track. Today Paul is a strong man who has great compassion for those who are still suffering from addiction. In the end, Paul made it through.

Such deep seeded issues at an early age. I really feel for Paul, but I am beyond impressed that he listened to his sponsor and turned his life around. This is definitely a story everyone should be made aware of proving that recovery is always possible and within reach.

I like his starting statement, quite emotional and teary... When one thinks back to the days when one will subconsciously hurt ones beloved cause of something that can be prevented at the first place, will make one feel really bad. This is one point watchword that people should look out for and keep themselves away from the calling for drugs. It hurts!.

This story of drug addiction from Paul is indeed disturbing and worrisome. As a matter of fact, abandoning one's family has aggravated the situation. Addictions of any form should be avoided for a healthy living.

Thank God for family! If it wasn’t for my family (my husband), I would most likely be dead. I went into rehab to save my marriage, but I stayed in rehab to save my life! While I was there I became sick. I was born with a very rare disease and I was having an episode! The rehab director wanted to release me, but I refused to leave, I told the director that if I got worse, I would agree to go see my primary doctor and if he wanted me in the hospital, then I’d go. Two days before I was going to graduate from the rehab, I talked with the director and said I needed to go into the hospital the next day. I called my primary doctor, explained what was going on and that I needed to go into the hospital. He said everything would be worked out and he’d see me in the hospital the next day. I then called my husband and explained exactly what was going on and that he needed to pick me up and take me to the hospital. Just before I was released from the rehab they gave me a graduation, with a certificate showing that I completed rehab! I graduated one day early! My husband was so proud of me, then he rushed me to the hospital. I’ve been clean for almost 27 years on November 18th 2019. Over the past 27 years, I’ve been tempted to use, but I remember exactly what my husband told me before I went into the rehab. I love my husband and I can’t live without him! I stay clean one day at a time! If I can stay clean anyone can stay clean! You get as much out of the 12 step meetings as you put into the meetings! In the beginning, after I got out of the hospital, I was going to 3 meetings a day! I did that for the first year I was clean. I attended meetings all over the city I lived in. I went to Convention meetings, I got very involved with NA. If there wasn’t an NA meeting around, I would attend an AA meeting. I did everything I could to stay clean! Now that it’s been almost 27 years I don’t attend as many meetings as I use to, but I stay in contact with people who I got clean with! Living life on life’s terms is difficult, but it’s truly worth it! I have a great life with my husband, my family and friends! I wouldn’t have that if I had continued using drugs and alcohol! I have to give GOD all of the credit, because without him I never would’ve gotten clean! You truly need a power greater than yourself! If you don’t, you won’t stay clean, I know from experience!! Just take it one day at a time!!
