As a European, the idea that the American government DOESN’T actually tell you *how much* tax you have to pay, and that you have to basically guess, with the threat of being fined or actual imprisonment if you get it wrong is absolutely insane.

It was a necessity in the early days of the country because of it's massive size (it takes over 72 hours to drive from cost to cost without stopping) and population. There wasn't enough money for the manpower it would take to calculate everyone's taxes so an entire industry developed to help people file their taxes. But that's not the case anymore with computers and the Internet. Now the tax filing industry lobbies the government to not create it's own free tax filing system. The current agreement is that the US Gov will not develop it's own tax filing system as long as the tax filing industry has a free filling for federal taxes. Buuuuuuut as corporations and lawyers do they have exploited loopholes to get people to pay to file their taxes. Additionally, us citizens have to pay taxes twice: one for the federal government and one for the state government. The agreement the federal gov has with the industry does not include state filing. So no matter what you still pay. Of course you could learn how to do your own taxes and submit them through the mail.... But if you get it wrong you get fined! Yay! :/

Well that'll never happen bc of the way American schools teach history. First of all, we really only learn American history, even AP History classes are usually only US History :/ And second of all, with the way the original American revolution is framed, the revolutionists were "the good guys," not fighting against their own country but against a "different" country, Great Britain. So, why on Earth would the good, God-fearing people of America go against their own, good, God-blessed country? Rememebr everyone, the systemic oppression of our society starts at birth!!

Funny thing is i can't tell you where most of the states are on a map, but i can tell you where Uzbekistan, Lithuania, and Turkey are on a map!

it's so weird for the States. In Canada you just tell the CRA what you made and can even auto fill that info into what ever tax filing site you are using, then they tell you if you owe anything or they send you a refund. I can't imagine trying to figure out how much you own/get back on your own
