"Failure sometime's leads to great success!" I think some one said that in a movie. 🤔 Anyway you proved that the statement is in face true. You found something that did not work and turned it into a thing of beauty! Awesome! LLAP 🖖

Did you consider spray on adhesive? Also, you can cut small sections out of the middle of the frame, use wood putty on the seams, and repaint it.

Why not try a brass accent to fill the left and right gap. Maybe some kind of rod with finial ends to look like it was a map you roll up?

Get some 3M 2 sided film (comes in rolls) apply it to the back of what you cut out on the laser then peel off the film and stick it to your base sheet. Quick, clean and strong! You will find a ton of uses for it after you use it! Love this project by the way!

If you apply 3m adhesive paper to the back before cutting, you get adhesive right up to the edge with good coverage. You can paint the back before you apply it, too. If you want a second surface print feel. Any questions feel free to hit me up.

Usually you can avoid this if you let the primer and sealer completely cure for a few days. But if you wanna do things quickly, do exactly what you did but use water soluble oil paints instead, they work great!

First, let me say that this came out gorgeous. Your "old map" aging details are just right, not too subtle but not silly and fake looking. This is a sleek piece. Now, to my question: Was there a reason you chose clear acrylic, since you were going to paint the surface completely opaque? When I first saw the top layer, I presumed it was reverse-cut (image flipped, cut, then use the "back") and that you'd be painting the back of it to get that 3D effect you were talking about. It just seems like you'd have had an easier time accomplishing the finish you were pursuing if you'd started with a thin sheet of wood. In the past, it might have been cheaper as well, but probably not since the pandemic. Oh, and I'm new to your channel, so forgive me if you've already done so, but if you haven't already used the art sealant spray Mr. Super Clear, you should try it. It's available in gloss and flat finishes, and I've watched multiple creators/makers who work in plastics, apply finish colors in many stages/layers, or use unstable media like chalks praise its results. It might have worked on your original basecoat.
@TheSmugglersRoom

Thank you! The only reason I used the acrylic for this was due to time constraints and that I had it on hand. I didn’t have and mdf ot wood at the time, and I only had a couple of days to get it done. As for your suggestion of the super clear, thank you! I had not heard of that. I’ll definitely try that out! Thank you much for the suggestion!
Close call… with awesome results 😊

@@TheSmugglersRoom I actually had a hard time getting through it. I didn't not like it. It dragged on a bit in places. Not sure how well it follows along Tolkien's timeline. I think I might of missed something. After applying the red primer, how did you get the top coat on without getting into the red primer. Was it rolled on, or masked?
@TheSmugglersRoom
10 ай бұрын
After the red primer we just sprayed the top coat directly onto the map. No masking needed. The top coat didn’t fill into the recessed areas.
If it was me i would have put some leds somewhere so they would shine through the small gaps between the frame and picture
@TheSmugglersRoom

Do you guys ever plan on doing some Warhammer 40,000 props and whatnot?
Just cuprous. Any reason to go with acrylic over like 1/8" mdf for the map? It looks amazing, the only criticism (constructive) is I would have loved a black wash over the Middle Earth and compass in the bottom left to make that pop a bit.
@TheSmugglersRoom
10 ай бұрын
Hey there. Yes, wood or MDF would have worked great. The only reason i used acrylic is that i had it on hand at the time I needed it. Otherwise an MDF would have been great. I also agree, the Middle earth needed more attention. A black wash would have been perfect.
@frankmthompson

@@TheSmugglersRoom Hey, the material on hand is the perfect material when you just want to get it done :) I completely understand. I wasn't sure if you had any other plans that got nixed like some kind of back lighting, that might have had an interesting effect.
Should have left the acrylic clear and painted the landmass underneath.
@TheSmugglersRoom

That's definitely one way to go!
Why would you use thinned out oil paint as apposed to thinned out acrylic paint?
@TheSmugglersRoom
10 ай бұрын
The biggest reason for me is that oil washes really have a cool effect the way they run into all the cracks. They spread incredibly well. They also have a long working time which i love. I used to use acrylic paint all the time (still do in some projects) but the oil paints have have a great look and texture.

I think i see where the diy channels started crashing, about the time laser cutters, glowforge and all the machines that took the diy out of the videos. There use to be 12 channels i would make sure to always be caught up with, now they hardly show up. There are people like me a disabled vet on a strict budget that will never see a machine, did get a 3d printer 2 years ago, never had a print work past 3 hours, funny 23 yrs as an engineer, that went to a famous college.
@TheSmugglersRoom
10 ай бұрын
Well, we still do plenty of DIY here on this channel. Last week we had a whole episode Building with found parts. Couple weeks before that another project where we used found parts as well. We try to have a balance, in addition to not limiting ourselves on the types of tools we use. In this particular episode, yes, the laser cutter was used to make the map, but the majority of this episode was about applying the paint and the error we made. What we hope people get out of this is how to a sound a similar mistake or pick up a new tip on how do work with a specific material. Not everyone will want or can purchase a laser cutter, some folks won’t want to use a 3D printer, and still others will have other wants that we will miss. 🤷♂️ Hopefully no matter what the tool you use the root of what we do here can still be found, inspiration.
