Then again, more traditional unicorns are much less horse like than most modern depictions, it’s probably a stretch but they could be playing into that? That’s a great catch though I didn’t even realize

I recommend the book called the last unicorn for a wonderful story that uses the old depiction of a unicorn. It's a lot more deer-like and awesome!

The hoof used was a toed animal such as a deer, goat, or pig. Horse (or unicorn) do not have the gap at the toes.

They look good for what they are, but idk something is just off about them for me. Like when I see them I don’t think, unicorn. Idk if maybe it’s the curved horn on the back, maybe a pearl like horn would’ve been a nicer touch. I think it’s too much of the same color. Don’t get me wrong they’re beautiful. I just think maybe some minor changes would make them better.

I love mythology and the history behind how the people's perceptions and lack of scientific understanding shaped beliefs, one of the theories as to where the belief for unicorns comes from is that people saw deer or deer skulls with horn deformities that caused them to grow just one horn. It would explain the cloven hooves. Imagine someone while it's dark seeing the silhouette of a one horned, slim, equine-looking creature and come morning they find cloven-hoof prints, super easy for someone without the knowledge we have nowadays to assume it was some mythical creature, after all no animals with one horn existed around them - that's what they knew for sure :) If you consider the fact that back then people mostly heard of new animals through word of mouth, it makes for quite some interesting depictions and misunderstandings that result in mythological creatures or very much interpreted appearances of animals. Take the lion for instance! You see weird looking statues of lions on a lot of old european buildings like churches or town halls, they look so weird and you wouldn't guess they were lions because who ever saw a lion with their own two eyes? Imagine someone describing what a lion looks like to you - few artists ever actually saw a lion to accurately paint or sculpt one, most of them based their lions off the drawing of someone who'd based theirs off of someone who'd based theirs off a description....etc. etc. makes for some funny monkey looking lions or weirdly human faced ones - now imagine multiple people all over different countries telling stories of the one horned, super skittish creatures they saw in the forests, and one of them finds a skull with one horn as proof even :D Whale bones are also another source for belief in a mythological creature btw - dragons! I mean who would believe a gigantic air breathing creature died in the middle of mainland? They found gigantic bones when digging deep and thought they found dragon skeletons! It's super fascinating to me

This thread made me google the Unicorn's mythology and it was enlightening! They have been referenced since ancient Egyptian times and were originally a case of mistaken identity with an oryx or antelope. Centuries later, Hebrew texts confuse them with oxen. Remember, there was no internet so people just relied on word of mouth to learn about new and wonderful creatures and then try to draw them from imagination. The interpretations of their body shape varies widely throughout time and different cultures, with the exception of the cloven hooves and the single horn. There were even references to unicorns that historians now are pretty sure are talking about Rhinos! In the Middle Ages, they became more goat-like, with a beard and fetlocks over their tiny, cloven hooves. Their tail was portrayed as more giraffe like though; long and slender with long hairs growing off the end. This is also when they started to resemble tiny horses more. Just a bit to get you started, if anyone wants to learn some fun stuff instead of debating whether her badass shoes should be cloven or not. (I have now concluded that they should, indeed, be cloven) I'm now too lazy to google the difference between fantasy and mythological creatures just now but I bet that's a thing...

Just curious, but have you ever done a Paw type shoe? Like a werewolf or something? I'm curious what it would look like if you made a Paw shaped shaped shoe instead of a Hoof shaped one. Seen lots of hoof designs from your channel now, and I'm curious how you'd go about making one in a different shape

Can I ask why you take the time to cast with resin rather than using the original sculpted/printed piece and painting it? I've never really understood why, but it always looks great anyway :)

the original sculpt is clay and heavy, the casted one is also hollow and much more durable, aswell as being able to cast multiple (for both shoes)

Traditionally unicorns had the hoves of a deer or goat, you'll find most old European art distinctly shows cloven hoves.

Unicorns have had many different depictions throughout time. Some of them were more goat-like, others more deer-like, and some were literally just oxen or rhinos. Moderns ones are just horses with horns usually. There is no “right” way to depict a unicorn, unless you’re internally trying to pull from one culture from one specific era in time.
