@@thinksie The exact Chip is called Super FX 2. The Super FX 10,4mhz got only used for Star Fox, the Super FX GSU 1 got used for 4 games (Vortex, Dirt Racer, Dirt Trax FX, Stunt Race FX) and the chip used for Yoshis island, the Super FX 2 GSU 2 got used in only 2 other Games (Doom and Winter Gold) Most of these games use the chip a lot different though. From what I found, not a single game on the NES was able to rotate sprites. Only some very rare games on the SNES with the FX chip. Some games on the SNES had limited rotation too, by instead rotating the sprite itself, the used mode 7 to rotate an entire Layer. This had incredible limitations though, because Mode 7 only allows a single layer, so in fights where Mode 7 was used for this, everything else is very empty. The Bowser fight in Super Mario world at the end example, Bowser can rotate but there is barely any background because if technical limitations with Mode 7. The SNES had some amount of Pixels it could render independent as sprites so the background can only exist out of these and even with mode 7 only a single object can rotate at the time, because you actually just turn the entire layer with everything on it. In short: Rotation on NES was never to be seen and even on the SNES rotation had incredibly technical limitation. Without the FX Chip it was extremely niche and only possible with incredibly limitations from Mode 7, and even with the FX Chip you only had a very limited amount of sprites you can rotate. (Fun Fact: Because of that not all the flowers in Yoshis island rotate, some are actually just sprites switching each other out so there is more space for other objects. You can see it if you look for it)

This is almost exactly what I've been wanting Nintendo to do. NSMB brought 3D Mario's moves to 2D, and that was further expanded in Mario Maker 2's 3D World style. A new 2D game with Odyssey's moveset has a lot of potential, even without captures (the hat can stay). It could even be balanced by making the hat a power-up. I honestly don't think this will get taken down so long as you don't keep developing it. This as it stands just seems like a good proof-of-concept.

To demonstrate this, create an image that is 8x8 pixels and draw a diagonal line. Now do the same thing in a 64x64 image. Attempt to rotate both examples by 15 degrees and notice the edge becomes very messed up with the lower resolution, with the higher resolution uses the extra pixels for a much smoother line. The same effect happens when you copy a sprite originally intended for a 256x256 canvas ato a 1280x1024 canvas and rotate it. The source is embarrassingly sloppy. I didnt make this game with any thoughts of orgainizing code, variables or even objects and sprites. Most are nameless and most variables without prior knowledge of the framework would take forever to get down. Normally when I make projects, I organize everything with extensive notes on variables and codes so that I can always resume the project if I ever take a break. But this was a rush project with no real need for organization because its a one level and done project. But if theres a enough demand for it, I'll try and get it organized out to where its at least understandable and release it.

0:43 ... The reason why the NES Mario had only three colors is because NES sprites for actors had a limit of 3 colors, not because of avoiding him blending in with the background... Gameboy/GBC had the same limit... I don't intend to be mean, but about this point, if you don't know the reason for something, please don't make one up, that spreads misinformation. 1:00 ... Giving sprites outline doesn't render more colors. NES actor sprites literally have a limit of only 3 colors per actor. It wasn't to "reduce the amount of colors on screen" it was because there is literally a limit of 3 colors per actor. Seeing Kirby's Adventure for comparison is based, yes, Kirby's Adventure is a good game and is probably the best looking NES game I know of, but if you look at Kirby's sprite, it's 3 colors, pink, darker pink and outline color. the Waddle Dees and Waddle Doos too. Kirby is a simple character, so it's possible to make him with only 3 colors without miscoloring him. If you look at sprites from SMB3 or SMB2 you can see they still follow the limit. Here's the thing about sprites, there's a reason so many Koopalings had miscolored hair for instance, was because of palette limit per actor. Adding outline doesn't add extra colors to the screen. 1:18 Using Kirby's Adventure as proof... which literally follows the 3 color limit per actor... you proceed to give Mario 5 to 6 colors as an actor... which wouldn't be possible unless you put a second actor in the exact same place as the first for the other half of the colors, had the actor be at the exact same number of sprite relative to the first actor, always in the same position, and even then that's only a hypothetical idea and I'm pretty sure not many go through that trouble of having prettier looking sprites. I'm really sorry, but that's a tad bit frustrating. But I do understand you didn't know, heheh. 1:28 Pretty sure the 3 color per actor limit also applies to tiles too, 3 colors per tile. However, each NES tile can be 8x8 or 8x16 or 16x16 or 32x32 so I guess I don't mind as much the fact a 3 color limit wasn't precisely followed for the tiles. 1:49 It's cool that you've turned this into a programmed game. Game Development is awesome! But I really can't call what you've made, based on how unpromising the first chunk of the video was I just watched, what Super Mario Odyssey would look and feel like if it were ACTUALLY on the NES, you get what I'm saying? 4:52 I like the dive move, but I don't think that's how it'd look. Why? Because NES Resolution is 256x240 pixels. Granted for that one, I can understand it only looks that smooth because the screen size of the game is bigger, and you probably didn't want to do a tiny screen some users would probably complain about. 6:16 Your 2D Mario Odyssey fan game is cool, however, the actors have too many colors per sprite. Especially that Bowser with 9 colors and the Peach sprite with 8 colors if I counted correctly... not what you'd see on the NES... Also, I don't think this even follows the NES color palette. Did you look up NES color palette when designing the sprites and everything to know which colors would realistically work on an NES game? I swear some of these colors, maybe it's just me, don't look like they're part of the NES color palette. If I were to make an NES style game of sort, I'd google search NES color palette and pick colors from that, hahah! 9:55 Capturing was kinda the whole point of Super Mario Odyssey though. I get that it was made in two days, but I feel there could have been at least some captures. Though then again, I don't see any enemies, so I guess you didn't have time for that either. When I saw the title of the video, I actually thought you were making an NES game, but as it turns out, you made a PC game that is intended to mimic the NES style, but gets several things incorrect instead. Still neat, just... eh... I'm gonna probably try this fan game out at some point since it does look like fun, heheh.

I'd like to give some creative criticism and 8-bit knowledge. 0:43 Old-school graphics aren't (usually) stored as colored pixel bitmaps, unlike modern graphics. Instead, on the NES in this case, they are stored as integer values with 2-bits per pixel (a.k.a. 4 pixels per byte), each 2-bit number referring to a color index ranging from 0 to 3 (4 possible colors) in a palette of 8-bit colors. The reason Mario doesn't have blue overalls is not only because it would blend in, but also due to color constraints. This is also why you only see Mario with 3 colors at a time; the zeroth (0th) color for moving sprites is almost always used for the transparent pixels. See the sprites at the bottom at 0:44 ? Those are all the same sprite, just using colors from different palettes. It's done this way to preserve space on the cartridge and in memory, as the NES only had 2KB of VRAM and the cartridges were 40KB total. I would also like to note that many of the sprites you created could be substituted with or replace the old ones, and avoid adding extra ones, for the same old reason of storage constraints. 4:52 the rotation on this animation would be impossible on the NES; the graphics chips simply couldn't do it, but the SNES could. Anyhoo, you did a great job and I respect the effort! I hope the knowledge I provided will be useful for future projects like this.
