I Made a Handheld Virtual Boy (The Real Boy)

I spent a year of my life making the Virtual Boy less awful.

KEYCHAIN UPDATE: 6/20/2021
Thank you to everyone who sent me mail! After receiving a volume of mail far larger than I ever expected (i.imgur.com/iltDyFK.png), I am now ending the keychain PCB giveaway. I hope to do something like this again; it was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I will try my best to work through the letters postmarked before the cutoff date, and prioritize the remaining keychains. If your letter is sent after the date, I cannot promise you will get anything sent back. I would love to get one to everyone indefinitely, but my time is limited, and its time to get to work on my next project.
Or you can purchase a small batch of the PCBs yourself using this link:

I actually miss our virtual boy. We had every game. For some reason my parents decided it was an outdoor toy, so it got all nasty and pretty sure they tossed it in the trash. I loved that thing. I didnt care about its shortcomings, most of the games were really good. This is an amazing mod. Perhaps one day ill have to make one or buy one.

I had a plasma car and it had a warning that said "DO NOT RIDE OUTSIDE" and my dad told me it was an outdoor toy and that it would "ruin the wood floor" and then I started riding it on streets and then a year later I saw the warning and I started riding it indoors but the road roughened up the tires it ruined the floor its been sitting in the garage ever since.

As one of the dozens of people who legitimately loved the Virtual Boy, this really gets me right in the feels. I remember making that damned thing portable. I took it with me when my family took a 2 day car ride to Florida for vacation. I'd play that thing till it felt like blood would soon be streaming from my eyes. It was bitter sweet when Block Buster stopped supporting the console since that meant I couldn't rent games anymore, but on the flip side I picked up their rigid rental case to store it in, and I picked up a bunch of games (granted it didn't have many to begin with but I had most of them) I know a commercial version of this would never happen, but it sure would be cool to play again.

I love how you decided to do something no-one'd ever done just because it would be difficult and then actually went through with it even when faced with unexpected obstacles, it really shows the passion you have for your craft. I use to play a virtual boy for HOURS at my local Target back when the system came out. I never once got a headache and never understood how people got one. I played it so much the store asked why I never bought one. My mom immediately said no whenever I asked. I miss those days.

Edit: I know this is from months ago, but just wanted to reply. 3d affects people differently. In general It messes with me. On a 3d tv or going to a movie, unless I can't see the borders of the frame my eyes start watering and I get a head ache. Some movies look stuttery. Even the higher frame rate 3d movies (which are significantly better on my eyes) mess with me if I can see the borders of the frame. Once those borders disappear though it is magic. I do love it when it's perfect. The VB was very cool, especially when you were completely immersed and had no light bleeding in but it ran fairly choppy and that framerate is what killed it for me. Oddly enough the newer 3ds the Nintendo made didn't bother me much. Don't know what vodoo they did but it kinda worked for me.

Funny, that's the only place I ever got to play a Virtual Boy was at my hometown target growing up. I really wish I had seen them when on clearance or had even known about them going out of production at the time and I would have definitely bought one and all the games at the time.

I got lucky and my mom bought me one without me asking, it was finding more of the games that was a problem. I loved playing that Virtual Boy at home, would lay on the floor and found a comfortable position that way. The controller was also one of my favorites, having 2 dpads and 4 buttons with shoulder buttons felt very natural.

@@vaguedreams On the 3ds front if you mean the "New" branded ones, Nintendo actually added a face tracking feature that adjusts the top screen to match your viewing angle so when you're playing in 3D the natural movements of your head don't mess with the 3D effect as much leading to less headache/eye strain issues. Genuinely a good innovation from Nintendo for once and may as well be actual voodoo lol --- Hopefully knowing what it's doing doesn't ruin the effect for you, it didn't for me, it isn't obvious that it's happening but it's noticeable if you're looking for it (I only found out/realized this was a thing a few months ago when I noticed it as I turned the screen to show someone else)

@Brian Donegan I understand your point of view but the reality is that Nintendo for a long time has no ambition to surpass itself or to take its products to a true level of technical progress. For example we have the current Switch that in the nascent 9th generation, is a machine with 7th generation hardware giving us extremely limited games and completely moving away from the hope of being at the same technical level as Sony and Microsoft today. The only true ambition Nintendo has today is money, greed to consolidate its position of power in the industry, rather than true progress and well-being for its consumers and fans, us wich with nostalgia and pain, they remember the days of the 90's when the Nintendo 64 was the most powerful and innovative gaming system of its time and without neglecting the exclusives of the brand. It is sad that the motto "Nintendo Play With Power" isn't possible anymore in these modern times where gaming machines are more powerful than ever and can do the impossible to give us titles of unmatched technical quality. The least Nintendo can (and has to) give to all us gamers in this era is a system (console) that runs at the same capabilities with the mainstream market, the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X
