Shelby, I had never heard of Medium before your first video and joined it immediately after watching. I wrote an article that's been knocking around in my brain for a while. It got around 3,000 views, then got featured on a publication and then curated to the Medium email etc, same as you. It currently has about 7,000 views and made over $100. So thank you! I was even contacted by an Australian publication about reposting my article on their site. As a former journalist now working in post production, it's so nice to have somewhere to get back into writing. Hopefully my next article does as well, but even if not, I'm glad I found Medium. Thank you! 👏🏻

I think the fact that your (Medium) submission was literally about your huge earnings on KZread shows that you're a well known creator with huge audience so it probably is a likelihood that Medium (if they didn't already know of you) would've searched up your channel and found the video doing the experiment and bumped it so you got good results so they get more ppl sub'ing and more creators.... In saying that, I still love that you did the experiment and as always was a great video and Im def going to submit articles :)

I came across your article on medium. I was instantly like: oh thats the article Shelby wrote in that video! And then 20k claps surprised me even more. Since then i have been waiting for this video

I watched for example the one with Dana and the car light polishing (sry for my English I am from Germany). I think that more people could be able to see your channel if you would change some little things in the title of your videos and on your channel. That would be awesome because I think you earn more subscribers :)

im pretty sure having 1.5 million youtube subscribers will help in getting more article views. It increases your credibility, and will be shared by more people. Not really a good strategy for everyone else.

She addressed that in the video. Even if all her subs watch it doesnt make her money because we are not paid medium users. So that money came because actual paid medium users read the article.

@@NathanielGE but the paid medium users know she's a credible person because it's easily recognizable she has 1.5 million youtube subs. I just don't think people should waste their time thinking Medium articles will be a reliable sid-hustle, it just isn't for 99% of people.

The article reads aren't from her subs but of course being a big youtuber adds credibility to an article about KZread. So then the question for anyone that wants to do something similar is 'what subject do I have a lot of credibility in and could write about'. I'm sure this comment section is full of people with expertise and experiences others would love to read about.

I really like how you tell people to be patient. A lot of people forget how long it takes to get viewers, readers, and such.

This makes writing on Medium seem much easier than it is :/ I appreciate your feedback but its not an accurate representation at all.

I’ve been writing on Medium for less than 2months now. I’m now a Top Writer. It’s been 3 days since I monetised & have made $150 so far. But a post went semi-viral. I’m definitely just going to focus on Medium rather than my KZread channel from now on.

Yes you're right, KZread is hard work. 290 vids and not even close to ever being Monetised. But it's been a lot of fun though creating vids so no regrets. Ditto Medium. Have just started thanks to Shelby.

Mohamed Maftol it’s much harder to earn income from a blog than it is with Medium- with a blog it usually takes years before you begin seeing any income

Medium decided to cure your article so you can make an update video on Medium earnings. ( The last one was not so good, $0.04). Doing this, more people will start to go to Medium to read and write articles. That's a good marketing move from Medium 😁

You are a talented content creator but there's no doubt that as soon as they saw your article they immediately found your video and therefore your successful channel and they knew that they would be able to generate traffic for them from your channel because they knew you would do update videos so it was a no brainier for them to highlight you. That also doesn't take anything away from the quality of your article. Both things can be true simultaneously.

Its free advertising on their part. I wonder how many people looked into or started writing for medium based off this. It was the first time I was made aware of the company and it propelled me to look into it. They most likely saw how she met the standards they set and how made a popular video about medium and ran with it. Good for her. Its just that I bet the average person writing for them is not making that kind of money that fast off of a single article. Its like yeah one can make money off medium but its alot easier when you already have credibility, are an "influencer", and have your article accepeted, promoted and bannered by a publication with hunderds of thousands. Its awesome she mad money off of it and she is probably a good writer. Its just that regular people should go in with low expectations. Seems like many people in the comments think they are going to make thousands like its nothing.

Ever since you posted the video saying you made like 4 cents, I was sooooo confused because I'd just started medium as well. My first article made $212, but each one after has only made about $1-4 so not much but huge difference from 0.04. Quality over quantity is always important but I just hate seeing my views plummet if I don't post in a while.

I think Shelby is the most honest and transparent creator online. She constantly reveals how things really work behind the scenes online, and makes it easy to understand. I learn so much from her, and actually trust what she says. Thank you Shelby!

I am not in any way criticising you. Kudos to you for earning 6K for your article. You give a lot of helpful advice for anyone who's primary focus is earning money through Medium. Since they changed the way in which earnings are calculated in the fall of 2019, the length of time viewers spend on an article is how Medium's algorithm calculates earnings to a great extent and 'claps' mean nothing- I don't even know why that icon is even still present on the platform. Short articles don't stand a chance of such earnings. Don't write poetry or fiction if you expect to earn anything through their partner program. Medium is full of articles such as yours, and yes, many of them are earning a substancial dime. But, just from a personal perspective, I find most of those articles utterly boring, and watching paint dry on an abandoned curb might hold my attention longer than reading a lot of them that Medium chooses to push forward on their platform.
