@DailyStoic, you pinned this comment as a way to deflect from some of the validity present in the comments. Instead of questioning, you've doubled down and now you're insulting them by inferring they lack humor in what you still think is a humorous situation. Now, it isn't a serious situation, but it certainly is a situation that puts your values up in question... and it looks like many notice.

This could be taken as an opportunity for growth and self reflection, rather than "It can't possibly be me who is at fault, it must be everyone else" followed by petty insult throwing. Acknowledgement of ones own failure commands so much more respect than deflection. Honestly I'm happy that this channel introduced me to Stoicism, but I have long felt that Ryan does not always practice what he preaches with the constant need to validate himself by reeling off his achievements every chance he gets and constantly self aggrandizing his own virtues / showing off about his lifestyle and how he's living better than his imagined viewer. Not to mention the shilling of products and sponsorship whilst espousing the evils of greed lol. It ironically smacks of someone in need of self-validation. That in itself wouldn't even necessarily be a problem if he was open about it and took working on that as a focal point of his stoic practice (the Stoics stressed their own fallibility and the constant work needed to maintain their own virtues after all). After watching dozens if not hundreds of Ryan's videos on here though I have not once heard him address a single misstep or weakness of his own ability to live up to whatever virtue he is espousing that day, instead he talks as if he has somehow "completed stoicism" and is preaching from a position of infallibility. Probably the reason this has seen a particularly strong backlash is that it probably attracted those like me among his viewership who echoed such concerns and were hoping to be reassured by a sign of humility, instead finding the complete opposite. If Ryan deletes this video or starts preening out the negative comments that will be the end of the road for me with this channel, as it would run so contrary to what he proclaims to stand for,

So far I have Discourses Fragments Handbook and The Enchiridion by Epictetus along with a collection of Senecas essays and of course Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I'm hoping to add Letters later on but afterwards any other recommendation? I prefer to stick with the ancients directly just personal preference so no disrespect towards the modern sources.

I agree this video is in poor taste. However if stoics have tought me anything. It doesn't matter who writes it , if it has useful knowledge it's still worth reading. In the end of the day this man makes a living of writing books. So can you blame him for trying new ways of selling his books. Everyone who embarks on new ways of doing things must accept looking foolish. So in a way I think this still aligns with Stoicism.

It's weird how we gatekeep Stoicism or any belief and Philosophy as it should only be used for this and this but no you cannot do this with it. I don't think it is wrong for someone to make money writing information that aims to help someone learn and grow. Hell most of what we buy does this. To play devil's advocate a bit here since I just find it funny how people of their own freewill clicked on this video and are upset about it when some even knew that this is potentially aiming to get your attention about his new book. The alternate argument here is people had a feeling it would be clickbait (I find that term terrible since the whole point of ads in general is to get your attention but obviously not in a very misleading way) no real harm was done at all this was such a short amount of time that it really impacted nothing at all. You got shown a book and that was it. Back to my actual thoughts though, you do have to know the audience as a marketer and that titles like this will throw off so many people for so many reasons. This seemed to get people's attention but it did half the work. The aim was get attention to the book. You got attention but that second part I don't know now. I'm sure people will still get it but now some will definitely not get it.. or stay subscribed.

How Ryan should have responded: Hello everyone, I want to take a moment to address the video I posted on May 15th, which was poorly received by many of you. I owe you a sincere apology. Firstly, I want to acknowledge the disappointment and frustration expressed by those who felt the video was more about marketing my new book than about genuine reflection or apology. As a student of Stoicism, I strive to embody the principles I write about, including humility, integrity, and sincerity. Clearly, I fell short in this instance. In Stoicism, we learn the importance of recognizing and correcting our errors. Marcus Aurelius reminds us, "If someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, I shall gladly change. I seek the truth, which never harmed anyone: The harm is to persist in one’s own self-deception and ignorance." This video was an attempt to balance my professional commitments and personal growth, but it came across as insincere and self-serving. For that, I am truly sorry. Seneca teaches us that "we suffer more in imagination than in reality." In my eagerness to share my new work, I allowed my own ambitions and insecurities to cloud my judgment, leading to a video that felt more like a marketing ploy than a heartfelt message. I understand now that this approach was misguided and did not align with the Stoic values I hold dear. I also want to apologize for the clickbait nature of the video. Epictetus advises us to focus on what we can control and to let go of what we cannot. I can control the content I produce and how I communicate with you, my audience. Going forward, I will strive to be more mindful and genuine in my interactions, ensuring that my messages are rooted in true Stoic wisdom and not overshadowed by commercial interests. Your feedback has been invaluable, and I am committed to learning from this experience. I appreciate those who have supported my work and those who have called me out when I have strayed from the path. Stoicism is a journey of constant improvement, and I am grateful to have such a thoughtful and engaged community to help me along the way. Thank you for your understanding and for holding me accountable. I promise to do better. With respect and gratitude, [Ryan Holiday]
