Sad to hear a lot of folks are having these issues across all platforms! I've been all Tidal the last while as I always liked that they paid artists more. I have my own music up on streaming sites (Dankmus, it's a hot amateur mess) and you need a lot of listens to make a living that's for sure. I'm probably going to take a break from streaming and enjoy the files I already own, maybe an excuse to finally get into vinyl and cassettes... EDIT: I forgot to mention Tidal vs my raw FLAC files and I always preferred the raw bois out of the FiiO's built in music player. Back to buying music for me!

Spotify tries to pay artists but there's been a huge controversy with apple vs spotify when apple introduced the 30% cut, making spotify having to increase their price a couple of dollars to cover the cost but then apple introduced their own music services which forced spotify to rollback on the prices. Then years later, the argument begins with a lot of people *ahem including epic ahem* standing up to apple with the cut being too high.

Here we are, nearly two whole years after Spotify announced its Hi-Fi streaming tier and they've still got nothing to show for it. Whatever the reason for its delay, I doubt it's going to launch with much fanfare. Lot of people seem to have forgotten about it at this point and I recently gave in and subbed to Tidal because I was sick of waiting for something that'll never come. It sucks but Spotify really screwed the pooch on this one, a golden opportunity squandered.

  • @Trippsy05

I switched to Tidal today because I can hear a slight difference, though I don't know if it's worth $10 more a month. Using beyer dt770 not sure if there would be a bigger difference on better cans. Looking to get beyer T5 soon anyway. I always did think that my records sounded slightly better than Spotify as well, but it's much harder to do a side by side test than it is to have Tidal and Spotify on the same computer screen. Spotify seems to be making interesting business decisions. I remember getting ads for Car Thing constantly, but it's just an android tablet that only runs Spotify. You can use your phone directly or some cars display a Spotify application when connected with Android auto. It's a completely unnecessary and expensive product for a nonexistent problem. It would be far more beneficial for them to add higher quality audio.

Hey, dank? I was very into audio hardware a while back and am getting back into it now because of you. I have one small bone to pick. Instead of buying FLACs, buy vinyls. Most of my vinyls, especially from larger bands, come with downloadable FLACs at no extra cost. So, you can get the physical artistry and content of vinyls and the quality of FLACs in one copy. Make sure you get vinyls at a smaller record store, tho. Up here in Canada, Sunrise Records, the big box record store, has no options at twice the price of mom and pop shops. The mom and pop shops have employees who I think have listened to every piece of music in the Western Hemisphere, the vinyls are like 20 bucks, they come with protective sleeves, and in general foster very friendly atmospheres compared with the big box stores. I can not recommend mom and pop shops enough, the atmosphere is, like, opposite of the snooty “you aren’t worthy of our service” nature of guitar shops.

The fundamental problem with Tidal is that they let Warner Music wipe all of the non-MQA FLACs from Tidal and replace it with MQA-encoded FLACs, which play in both "Lossless" and "Master" settings. Only if you play it in "Master" setting will the MQA unfold. But MQA is just as intolerant as the CCP. MQA censors anyone who is critical of them, whether unbiased or biased. When I go on an artists page and go to discography there are missing albums, but then I search for the album by name in the search bar and it finds it just fine. These aren't small things to me because having to spend 5 minutes navigating to what you already know you want to listen to is very annoying. And MQA is not FOSS. Otherwise I'd actually consider TIDAL. Compressed MQA is wors than Uncompressed High Res, but just CD quality is not hi res imho and thats what many streaming services actually offer and is a bit misleading.

I can't agree more with you. I'm musician myself and I also love high quality music and jazz, blues, among others. None of the above is present in Tidal. Even, so called, "master" tracks often sound like they were resampled from some low quality, chintzy, 128 kbps MP3s. But absolutely the most annoying, infuriating thing for me is graying out some classic, cool jazz or blues pieces. One day you have it, the next day you can't play it anymore! Just perfect. And let's be honest - Tidal doesn't have them in numbers even comparable to Spotify. I got hooked on Tidal by my car's manufacturer who gave me the best plan for the entire year for free but after another year I have enough and I'm going back to Spotify. And last but not least: Tidal is written terribly. Like they hired a bunch of undergraduates to program it during an internship. Your opinion only motivated me to move back to Spotify during this weekend, I'm not gonna wait any longer. Take care, buddy!

To be honest, I never stopped purchasing and owning my own music files. I never got on board with services like Spotify and Tidal, precisely because of the problems you pointed out. Why would I EVER allow corporations that have fought against user ownership and freedom to use products and services that were paid for the way they want, to control any aspect of how I access and listen to my music?? Why would anyone else (I ask myself time and time again), considering their track record?

I tried Tidal about a year ago or so and I really liked it but I had one issue. My problem with tidal was the pricing per month, which isn’t that bad if you have a steady income but I’m a college student and it’s hard to justify $13 a month. If they offered student pricing I probably would’ve kept it but like you mention Apple and Spotify are bringing out lossless so there really isn’t a reason to go back. I think Tidal is really cool but I just can’t justify the price. The coolest experience I had with Tidal was when I discovered The String Cheese Incident’s album “Untying the Not”. I was sitting in my car fiddling with Tidal and it suggested that album and I put it on. To preface this, my car has a decent stereo setup that provides a pretty decent well balanced sound. When the song “Wake Up” started my ears perked up and I noticed so much detail and clarity, it was like hearing Jam/Rock for the first time again. Since then I’ve listened to the album elsewhere and it still sounds amazing and I still get that “Oh wow that’s clearer than clear” feeling. It wasn’t enough to keep me on Tidal but it did show me how layered and rich music can be when you produce it and listen to it with care.

Nice. I had a lot of issues with Tidal on my phone and I thought they were because I live outside US and they just didn't care about bringing support over these parts. I started using it because it has the option to sync with Serato and it's great for Djing (that works like a charm, I had small dj gigs and it's awesome to have the entire Tidal library at your disposal. You can even CUE and Sample on the fly, and I never had any issues)

WAV, AIFF: lossless, uncompressed. As close to the original master as you'll get. FLAC, TTA, APE, WavPack (.wv), ALAC (.m4a): lossless, compressed. Identical to its bigger WAV equivalent, but smaller. That's what makes them lossless after all. Tom Scott has a video on data compression if you wanna know how that works. MP3, AAC (also .m4a), Ogg Vorbis (.ogg), Opus (.opus): Lossy compression; some audio data is lost, which for most folks makes no audible difference on an MP3 if the file has a bitrate of 320KB/s. As the bitrate goes lower, more data is lost, which quickly becomes noticeable. The smallest filesize comes from Opus, followed by Vorbis or AAC, and last comes MP3. Support for these formats goes the other way around though, MP3 being the most widely supported and Opus barely seeing any support anywhere. WMA is for losers. Whenever you transcode between lossy codecs, you can't get the lost data back, even when you transcode into a lossless codec, the latter of which will make the file bigger with no quality recovered in the process. (I've seen FLACs which are smaller to their MP3 counterparts though. Those are special cases where the audio is very simple. An MP3 encoded @ 320KB/s will always have the same filesize. FLACs don't have this limitation.) When you transcode between lossless codecs, data stays the same, but filesize and CPU usage might vary. FLAC has the best compromise between size and CPU and it's open source. You might wanna consider ALAC if you're using an Apple device, because Apple developed it and supports it on their devices.
