I'm getting anxious just watching your videos! That can't be a good thing, can it?

Фильм және анимация

Some subscribers and viewers sometimes comment that just watching my videos render them more anxious, not less. Rather than seeing that as a bad thing or evidence of serious illness, there’s another way to contemplate this… a short video to encourage you to keep watching despite the sensations!

Thank you for all your videos, Les. My fear of flying is so intense that I am one of those folks who experience anxiety just watching the videos. However, when Scout barked and came on screen, I noticed my anxiety disappeared. Afterwards, I watched the rest of the video without any anxiety at all. This reminded me of an experience many years ago when, on a turbulent flight, another passenger allowed me to hold her little service dog. From the moment I touched the dog, my fear was gone. As long as I held the dog, I had no anxiety. This was a one-time occurrence and since then, my flying fear is so severe I haven’t boarded a plane in 3+ years. Any thoughts on the dog experience?

To some extent, this depends on your relationship with canines. They allow us to form bonds of trust with another sentient being who can work with us… horses fall into the same category but most of us can’t have one in our house as pets. Some say the same about pigs. But assuming you have lifetime positive associations with dogs then you may have experienced a temporary diminution of your threat response by a reminder of your canine associations which have brought you pleasure and elevated your humanity. It’s a pretty special bond. Your task now is to form the same bond with yourself - to trust your threat response is helpful, but like Scout, it can bark at you loudly when it hears a noise or experiences a sensation when caught off guard. Like Scout, it is taken from a peaceful rest, to a state of alertness. When Scout discovers there is no real event to stay vigilant for, he proverbially shrugs his shoulders, doesn’t given himself a hard time for getting it wrong, and goes back into a restful state. That would be a good outcome for you too!

Wow... that is both a brilliant and beautiful perspective. Thank you so very very much, Les. I will keep your words with me. (And yes, I love all animals but dogs... I worship the ground they walk on :-).

Hi Les. I'm an Aussie who lives in NYC, I have spoken to you on here once before. I have watched, I think, nearly all of your videos and they do help, but I notice, if I forget about them for a few months, it comes back up. I am just about to take a flight in 3 weeks to London (6 hours) and my doctor is trying something new for me, Beta Blockers. But I get in such a tizzy, that leading up to the flight, that I get upset if anyone speaks to me regarding something that my brain links to a problem that could happen, whether rational or not. Mostly NOT rational. It's exhausting. I really hope the Beta Blockers work. Do you have any advice regarding them?

Beta Blockers remain quite popular in anxiety work, often used by GPs and Psychiatrists before exams or orals to keep blood pressure and heart rate contained. The idea being if you're not so aware of your heart racing or pounding, you'll feel less anxious. And there in is the clue for moving forward. You have to expose yourself to these increases, not calm yourself down in order for your brain to work out its OK to feel this way and no har will come to you. Because you feel these prior to a flight, you auto connect them to danger of flying. You have to practise bringing them on and be with them, or float able them, despite their discomfort and your previous thoughts they are meaningful signs of danger - they're false alarms. Hope this assists.
