    I grew up skateboarding and still love it and am glad I got back into it. I started the inlines with my son last fall and have really had a great time on those too. I'm sure I would make more progress if I stuck to just 1, but at my age its less about progress and more about just enjoying the journey. I generally blade when I am with my son and skateboard when I am alone and that works out pretty evenly. I struggle with everything that requires a jump, but I love skating transitions on both blades and the board so much that I'll never run out of new things to try. Good luck on your journey!

    Happy birthday! You fooled me haha I'm 34, started inline skating May 2023 at 33. I could have been skating since 2004 when I started hanging out at skateparks, but nothing came of it. Then again at 2019 when I wanted to learn so I could be out and about with my dog, but she passed later that year. I do feel bummed out I missed all those years of experience, but I'm glad I started anyway. "Better late than never" I suppose :) Feels great doing it, only thing in my way is the weather. Our climate kinda sucks haha

I have done that off and on my whole life and see guys my age who never quit with crazy skill still and wish I never stopped. BUT I am so glad I started back and found inline, both of them are so much fun and I just love skating transition on the both. Our climate is hot and humid in the summer, but you can get used to that and winter is mild and totally skateable. Good luck on your journey!

    That's awesome! I love longboarding but have not done it in many years. I had one of the early Sector 9 boards and skated it all over the place in the early 2000's. I need to pick up a new longboard and go cruising. The drop in's, like most everything in skating, are 90% mental. I worked my way up to the coping doing kick turns, and if you can do that, you can drop in. Decide you are going to do it and don't spend more than a second or 2 on the edge or you'll lose your commitment. Best of luck on that and your longboarding!

    I have been trying to do that more and it's coming, just very slowly. I do a better job in the beginning then start to lose it as my legs get more tired. I do find that any grind I manage to get on the ledge is always because I jumped on top and not into it. For some reason my rear leg, the soul foot, always wants to lag behind. I think subconsciously I am using it as a safety net for my bad knee, which is the front leg, so that it always touches ground first. That's definitely something I am working hard to overcome at the park.

    @@soyale360As you have probably seen, I have really not even gotten a good lock on switch so its hard to tell. The switch I tried to do mizu because of the of "toes out" position of that vs the "toes in" type of position on the regular soul was easier on my knee, but it is just not clicking, and I think on the ledges its that same left leg that lags when its the mizu foot. It looks like something I am going to have to work on without the skates, I even have that same problem doing box jumps and on the skateboard. I think its just a mental thing I will need to focus on both on and off the skates to see if I can get both feet to pull up at the same level. I had to work on that really hard jumping out of the bowl section at the local park, in that case it was my right leg dragging, because that left leg wanted to be the first on the ground after the jump. I have finally gotten to the point I can lift both feet evenly on those jumps now, so I know its just focus. Ultimately I think its a matter of overcoming decades of favoring that right leg and it will come at some point I hope!

    I am half your age. Just earlier today I decided to give a different style of skating (artistic skating) a try and ordered a pair of skates. I've always avoided sports, because my PE teachers managed to instill the believe in me, that doing any kind of sports is cruel and unusual torture. I always thought that someday the first signs of aging would scar me into starting to exercise, but what ultimately brought me to the decision to order some skates, is being faced with the realization, that if you don't do something today, you might never know when it is to late. Two of my loved ones developed severe physical disabilities over the last couple of years and are barely able to leave the house. It makes one realize, that there really isn't a guarantee for the future. I've always enjoyed skating and always fantasized about learning to do it properly one day. And if two months from now, something happens and I have to give it up again, it was at least worth it to try. Which leaves the question: If you were to decide tomorrow, that you are done with skating after all, would you still say it was worth it to start so late in life?

  • @theaverageoldguy

    @theaverageoldguy

    8 күн бұрын

    My path is exactly opposite yours. I have been active and involved in extreme sports my whole life. I have broken bones from my head (around my eye socket) to most of my toes, and lots in between. I have had sprains, strains, dislocations, separations, had plantar fasciitis for almost 15 years, and now have severe arthritis in my left wrist and right knee. All that said, I would not change a single thing. To answer your question, yes I would say 100% it was worth it to start the inlines late in life, and I am glad I rediscovered skateboarding as it was something I absolutely loved as a teenager. If I suffered an injury tomorrow that ended it all, I would be upset, but I would never, ever, regret having tried. I encourage you to give it a try. You can't make it completely safe, nothing in life is, but you can take your time, learn the basics, wear appropriate padding, don't skate outside your limits, and I bet before long you will gain confidence and skill you never thought you could. Give it a try and let me know how it feels!

  • @melinnamba

    @melinnamba

    8 күн бұрын

    @@theaverageoldguy "don't skate outside your limits" See, that's the thing about sports I am starting to realize. You should reach your limits and you need to push them to improve, but you should not go beyond. As a kid I was pushed beyond my limits a lot. I was one of the younger ones in class and a brainy kid to boot. Instead of recognizing my physical limitations, my teachers would call me lazy. Going beyond your limits feels really, really awful. For the longest time I thought, that my body was just weird and didn't produce that dopamine rush you're supposed to get from physical activity. But recently I saw a video where a psychiatrist talked about how kids like me often start to believe, that they are just not capable of doing sports, because their teachers assumed everyone in class had the same limitations. Now that I am an adult and have no teachers anymore who can belittle my efforts, I really hope I can find that joy, that people like you seem to get from sports. And with all the research we have around physical exercise, I think my chances are pretty good, as long as I go at my own pace.

  • @theaverageoldguy

    @theaverageoldguy

    8 күн бұрын

    @@melinnamba The key to sports, and exercise in general, is to find something you like so you will be excited to do it. I have been a runner all my life and love it, and I see so many people try to take up running for fitness or weight loss, but they hate it and try to force themselves to do it, and that never works. If you enjoy what you do, you'll do it more often, and the more often you do it, the better you get and the more fun you will have. Just doing that will expand your limits, and what used to scare or intimidate you will become fun. Starting something from scratch always has a learning period that may not be as fun as you thought it would be, but try to hang in long enough to get past that stage and see if you really like the artistic skating. If you go for a while and end up really not liking it, move on and don't beat yourself up about it, but don't give up on it until you really give it a good try and get past the awkward initial stages. I hope you will find joy in the skating and continue it for life!

    The way in which you balance, and how it feels when riding into a backside axle stall will be different than how it feels when you position yourself from the top in a BS axle stall, like you were doing to practice those axle to roll in, or to half kick turn, or whatever terminology you prefer to use. When riding up the transition into an axle stall, you can get your balance, while getting into the stall, and then stand straight up like you are when you start from the top in an axle stall. However, typically most skaters upon entering into an axle stall on the coping will generally be squatting a little with their knees bent, and their torsos down low closer to the board, and your weight will generally stay above the transition of the ramp, rather than shifting your body's mass into being vertical, straight above your board, as you are when you start the axle stall at the top of the ramp, when you cheat yourself into an axle stall, rather than riding into one, and nothing wrong with that cheating method for learning. Yes, riding into an axle stall, your body will be in a slightly different position, where it is more compressed, and it will stay out above the ramp more. You can always shift your weight to perform a longer lasting axle stall, but riding into it with a different balancing of your weight, and momentum, you will appear to have more of a flowing style, and it should also feel more flowy, this will help you transition into other tricks should you ever want to expand into various grinds, or other lip tricks. Besides, it feels so much better to ride the transition, hit the coping, and ride back down the transition in one smooth, flowing motion, than it does to perform an actual stall on the coping, for a stall interrupts that flowing sensation one can derive from skateboarding, and that flowing sensation can be highly addictive!!!

    Yea, I definitely want to work my way into riding into it and not just starting from the top in the stall. I don't have a great place to work on that though, none of our walls are set up like a mini-ramp that you can work your way into easily, you have to approach from flat ground and hope your speed is right. I would love to have a 3 foot quarter to work on, but ours are bigger and its really intimidating working into that! At my age, anything that looks like "flow" is probably an accident!

Last winter my son and I never had to wait on weather to skate. Cold here is not the same as cold in upstate NY! We rarely have days with the high temp below freezing, most winter days average in the 40's and 50's, very comfortable skating weather.

    Love to this brother here. The main thing for older skaters is fitness. You have to maintain the flexibility and strength in your hips, thighs, knees, and ankles. You may need to be working out as much as skating. You can see when AOG gets tired he starts bending forward at the waist, throwing his head out of line with the board, and inevitably falling. You must be able to compress into a squat with a neutral back position when needed. See Mitchie Brusco's channel "Skate IQ." Physics don't change just because you're older. See Norman Wood's channel. (the board does what the body tells it to do). Good effort. Inspirational. Love to all skateboarders everywhere. Avoid Thrasher and other Satanic forces. Pray.

    Continuing to work out as you get older is essential, you can't just skate (or whatever sport you play) you need to weight train and work on your mobility as well. No matter how hard you try, you lose those things as you get older and it gets harder and harder to maintain strength and flexibility. At my age its all I can do to stop the slide and maintain my strength and if I can not go backwards in any given year, that's progress!

    @@theaverageoldguy I hear you, and thank you for that honest personal reply. Having done all we can in human strength, the only thing left is prayer: "Pray one for another that you may be healed." I will pray for you, for skateboarding success, for increased fitness and mobility, for unprecedented longevity in your life and pursuits, all your loved ones to be saved and for the general will of God to be done in your life, as it is written: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved, you and your house." Also, pray for the skateboarding community to turn from darkness (satanic forces, Thrasher etc) to the light of Christ. Skateboarding is one of if not the biggest sport worldwide for children, and reaches demographics no other sport can. A skateboard can get into places where a Bible cannot go. It is perhaps unsurprising then that Satan has targeted skateboarding for his own. If you're like me, you have lost many friends to such things as drugs, suicide, early tragedies, accidents, war, etc. some of which were cosmically ordained, but others which were preventable. Skateboarding caused a few broken bones, but never killed any of them. But you are a survivor, and your life experience is instructive. You can be an example to the younger ones. You are an inspiration. Please do not be offended at my instructions, as I give them to the wise at the direction of one much wiser. Love to you and yours. PS. Massage gun, 2X day!

    From that dismount at the end there, in which you hurt your hip slightly, did you know that they make shorts with removable hip pads? Well, they do . . . however, when I just looked it up online, all of the images I saw, were of shorts with absolutely no style whatsoever, and with an obvious appearance of being padded. They were once available in a manner that was rather stylish (not trendy), and had an appearance to where it wasn't blatantly obvious that they had pads as what I see online with a quick search today.

    I'm talking about the G-form short pants that you wear under your cloting. they are made for cyclists. They have soft plastic pad on the hips and rear. the soft plastic hardens when it receives a shock and becomes soft again afterwards. it's very comfortable you totally forget you're wearing them and I've had enough falls with them which have proven to me that they are very effective. By the way, I'm 63 years old too, I started roller skating last year and immediately fell in love with this sport. I embarked on this project looking for a means of transportation because I was losing the ability to walk the usual long distances. Now it's my passion.
