I'm Coming Out : Diana Ross , The Supreme Gay Icon

Музыка

" I'm Coming Out" song, by Diana Ross, it has regarded as the anthem number one for the LGBT community.
The phrase "coming out" to describe one's self-disclosure of sexual orientation or gender identity had been present in the gay subculture since the early 20th century.
On November 25 , 2022 BPI ( that certifies the BRIT Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards) certified "I'm Coming Out" single as PLATINUM record for having sold over 600,000 copies in the United Kingdom.
May 22, 2020 : Nile Rodgers says Diana Ross “didn’t understand that ‘I’m Coming Out’ was a gay thing”. The Chic legend co-produced the singer's iconic 1980 hit
"I'm Coming Out," from Diana Ross's Diana album, is perhaps the apex of gay anthems. Recorded in 1980, the song's refrain, and its urging to "to break out of the shell" spoke directly to LGBTQ listeners who had declared their identities to the world.
However, Ross, who immediately loved the lyrics, was not always aware of the "coming out" association, as co-writer and co-producer Nile Rodgers revealed in an interview with the New York Post marking the album's 40th anniversary.
“She didn’t understand that that was a gay thing, that that was a person saying, ‘I’m coming out of the closet,’” said Rodgers. “She didn’t even get that.”
Rodgers - a member of the Chic production team, which produced Diana, with Bernard Edwards - explained how the track was inspired by a visit to GG's Barnum Room, a Manhattan transgender club. There, he saw a group of Ross impersonators.
“All of a sudden a light bulb goes off in my head,” he told the Post. “I had to go outside and call Bernard from a telephone booth. I said, ‘Bernard, please write down the words: ‘I’m coming out.’ And then I explained the situation to him.”
Rodgers said he ultimately convinced Ross to sing the track, arguing it would make the perfect opener for an entertainer, in addition to establishing her as one of the greatest gay icons. “I said, ‘Diana, this song is gonna be your coming-out song. We think of you as our black queen,’” he said. “And I even wrote a [horn] fanfare. I explained to her that it’s just like when the president comes out and they play ‘Hail to the Chief.’”
Diana, which also included the hit song "Upside Down," went on to become the best-selling album of Ross's career ( sold over 10 millions copies around the World : first time of ever, for a black singer ) .

@Loukas I knew at a very young age (same as you) that I liked boys more than girls. It’s not about “having demons”. Only an ignorant fool would say such a thing. I didn’t know it was called being gay, but I certainly knew that “playing” with my cousin (same age) was what I liked. And good for you for having Miss Ross as your icon!

The song is 40 years old, so even if she was homophobic back then, she may not be now. Even the smartest people were dumb back then. Plus maybe she just wasn’t comfortable with potential rumors that would arise. Or maybe she just wasn’t into queerbaiting

.... Diana Ross knows what it means to be discriminated : don't forget that she is black and she is a woman, very difficult conditions in the America of the 60s, when she made her debut with the Supremes !!

What this woman said about Diana's having said she wasn't dissing the gay community because they make up her record sales... That's just about how I've perceived things with her and that issue. She is from the old school...from a ministerial family. I am a real good judge of people and who they really are...I'm very astute, you might say. Diana Ross has always been glamorous and glitzy....with the big hair and beautiful glitzy gowns. Drag queens like that stuff and that's how they fix themselves up as female impersonators. Diana has loved beautiful gowns since she was a young girl...peering in department store windows. She didn't start all of that to try to be more appealing to female impersonators! But with all of her songs of love and bold glamour, the homosexual community just sort of bought into her, so to speak, and made her their entertainment icon. They bought her records, imitated her in their clubs and took the words to her songs to heart. In other words, they were very instrumental in her success through the years. So, whether she supported their way of life, or not. wasn't the issue when it came to making money off record sales. She made them believe that she was their strongest supporter, simply because that's where the money was at...Who wouldn't have done that....for the money? Diana was so focused on becoming successful and making money that she didn't have any time to consider being anti anything....She was only pro becoming rich. Yes she partied with them, hung their flag at Central Park in support of gay concerns and just whatever....But I strongly feel that her doing all of that was about the money...not about her personal feelings concerning homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle. Diana Ross is a woman of old school morals and principles...even when it comes to sexual behaviors. I never perceived her to be any other way. So when I saw videos depicting her as a strong gay supporter during the past, I know that it's all about loving the sinner...not the sin. For the bible followers of Christ that we are indeed to love the sinner, and hate only the sin. Homosexuality is an abomination to God...a sin in God's sight. The Holy Bible says so! As a follower of Jesus Christ, it is for me to hate the sin, but love the sinner. When Diana Ross looked into the faces of her predominantly LGBTQ audiences and said, "I love you," she meant those words. And, to this day. I believe she means it. She loves the sinner, regardless of how she may personally feel about the sin.... She's wisely chosen to keep her personal feelings about the behavior to herself because their love for her has been her bread and butter for decades.

I don't think she is that shallow frankly , plus if your going on Biblical things they wouldn't like celebraties and hoarding riches. I would suggest she isn't bothered.

@@jeframp3805 She's not shallow at all. Diana Ross has always been wise, when it comes to relating to her public. However, I believe that she's every bit as loving as she seems. She has been blessed to have a successful career because she is all about love and encouraging people to come together in unity and love.. She is an awesome human being because she has a sincerely loving heart. In biblical terms...We are to have faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love. I believe that Miss Diana Ross ministers love to the world through her music.
