    jonnenne That is right. You can usually see that most of the people of Pyongyang have a badge with Kim-Il Sung and Kim Jong-Il on it. They are loyalty badges, only for N-Korea's privileged class.

    Nope, actually the people in Pyongyang are probably going what they normally do on a daily basis. Remember that Pyongyang is the capital and showcase city for the privleged only. But also remember that the tiny country is forced to be almost entirely self-sufficient due to blockages on foreign trade. For that they are doing remarkably well.

  • @UnitedKingdomGovernment

    i agree with the fact that the people in Pyongyang were doing what they normally do everyday but you can't possibly defend it or think anything they do is good when their labor camps are almost a bad if not worse than nazi death camps and most of the population is starving

  • @1988ryan1

    @1988ryan1

    @@infinitasalo472 The fall of the eastern bloc only stopped Russia trading with them. They get almost all of their supplies from China from 1991, they are no where near self-sufficient. That's why there is JBL speakers, and why they all have coke bottles they remove labels from, and why they're all using Chinese phones. Not to mention the HUGE lack of electricity in NK, most of the little electricity they have they don't make themselves. I think they recently got self-sufficient in some basic foods like potatoes, but they still import things like meat and protean.

And building new roads and buildings... north korea is only using it's resources to building a greater facade, that's not a great thing and more 'like dubai' thing.

    North Korea is entirely created around propaganda. These tourist routes are designed to trick ignorant people, like so many in the comments, into thinking N. Korea is great, it's civilized, it's developed, but the reality is that its a horrific place of misery, starvation, poverty and death. This is documented, this is fact, nobody can make the case that North Korea is actually not so bad.

    It's nice to see something other than a picture of Kim Jong Un with an army in the background. There is more to a country than that, as bad as it may be. It's a different perspective and I personally enjoy this.

    +LotsaJello Of course there is. There are numerous documentaries, including one by Vice which seeks to examine the complex lives of North Koreans. This, however is a glib attempt at masking the real lives of North Koreans, which are brutal. There are numerous books, interviews and even Ted talks by defectors which are real looks into the people who really live in North Korea. This? This is trussed up propiganda for a brutal authoritarian regime.

    This documentary takes a different tone. It's showing the North Korea besides all the atrocities, which are already common knowledge so the film-maker likely didn't see the need to address them, since they're not what his film is ultimately about.

    i think there is quiet a lot of little things being ignored in the comment section, people saying it doesn't look that and or isn't that bad. Notice how the buses are packed, and notice how Louis and company are the only people eating at the restaurant, and how there are minimal cars on the road and housing that is clearly underdeveloped. North Korean Government is known for showing tourists minimal things and not showing them poor or deprived areas. Keeping is fun and glitsy instead of showing them the truth. Just bear that in mind.

    Of course it seemed better and more modern than you imagined because that's what they wished to protray. Why do you think they provided a guided tour? Why do you think they pointed out how newly built the airport was and the road you were talking about? Surely you're not this absent minded, Louis. :P As others have said, they're putting on a show. You think they're putting on a show just for him and other tourists? Please. Of course they are going to point out the newly built airport. It's new. What tour company wouldn't point out something like that? If you were in Pyongyang two years ago you would have used the much older airport. And yes, I wonder how many tours to the U.S. include a trip to the homeless areas like Skid Row in DTLA or South Central, or to private prisons, mental institutions, etc.? It's all Beverly Hills, Hollywood Walk of Fame, etc. -- DPR Korea is no different. And yet people keep rehashing the same line, "Oh, it's all a show" -- I guess if you say it enough, other people will eventually parrot it and it becomes fact.

    TheJauntyJester Actually, it's defined as this: '(of a person or a person's behavior or manner) having or showing a habitually forgetful or inattentive disposition.' Oblivious *is* one of the synonyms, but that's used more in a daydreaming way. I don't know what country you're from, but in American English, the phrase "absent minded" is Never used in a similar manner as naive. Not intending to start an argument or anything about this, just don't want non-English speakers (who use videos and tv and such as a way to perfect their English) to get the wrong idea. English is already confusing enough for ESL peeps,I'm sure.. lol ^_^
