BEYOND THE TOURISM - North Korea Day 5

DAY 1185 // 3RD AUGUST 2016 // Pyongyang, North Korea
Our 5th day in North Korea the most isolated nation on earth! I’m trying to focus on positive things in the country and combat the purely negative image we see in the Media.

He's never going to be able to talk "freely" about his experience there, it would put his own safety at risk and would damage the reputation of the organisation which allowed him to go to North Korea, which would then damage relations with the country.

Only showing the positive doesn't combat the negative. It puts you in the same place that the media is. How about showing the reality of the situation? These videos are only showing how much privilege you have, it isn't showing anything about the country.

Hey Louis. Love your channel, and I'm a long-time fan of your adventures. I appreciate that you're showing us a different part of the world, and North Korea might have built monuments that are symbolic of unity... but it's pretty hard to ignore North Korea's human rights violations, and I hope it's something you mention after the trip, for the sake of helping people gather a balanced, informed view of what's happening there... because everyone should be able to feel at peace, enjoy life, and live the adventure :)

Just a thought, would you expect discussion of this if he travelled to any other country? North Korea DOES have incredibly severe human rights violations, just like many other countries do. If he took a trip to the US, would you be asking him to talk about Guantanamo Bay? Most likely not... My point is that travel vlogs don't always have to be political. If he wants to make it political then it's entirely his choice. I see this more as showcasing whatever you will see (or in this case, be allowed to see) if you choose to travel to destination X. There is no way Louis saw ANY human rights violations for himself, so what can he say that hasn't already been reiterated by mainstream media? Louis isn't Yeon-Mi Park, there isn't anything more insightful he can offer about the human rights abuses because he isn't allowed to see them for himself.

Rosy Kira Hi Rosy, there’s room for improvement everywhere… it’s just that there are some places that are particularly bad. I feel like it would be like living in a community where everyone openly knew there was particularly bad child abuse, oppression and murder happening in one house… but going there and talking about the interior decorating, the food, and maybe the pool out back. I hope he has more to say on it afterwards.

since always - they want south to join them because they believe that the usa and japan were responsible for their split (which they were) it's the south that is refusing to rejoin them for obvious reasons like their dictatorship though technically the south will also be happy to rejoin them provided that they change (except that it'd be really difficult with their different economic situations) so really, the people of both koreas would like to unify but it's their governments that are the problem

Phill from the Phillip De Franco show put these videos into a really good analogy. If you go to a a mansion and there are lots of bad things happening in the mansion like rape, but they take you to the room with the hot tub and ps4's, and you come back and tell people about all the good things that were in the mansion, You're actually being ignorant to all the bad event occurring at the mansion. I can understand your trying to be positive but all these tours you're going on are organised by the NK government and they're not going to show you the rape, murder, violence and oppression that people face on a day to day basis. These videos are essentially North Korean propaganda. I wish you could have handled this better. All the best for the future.

***** why? Okay 1. Thw North Korean goverment is currently led by Kim Jong Un, in a hereditory dictatorship office. Now , I dont know how much you know about dictators, but most require prisoning political enimies as well as presenting shoqs of dorce. 2. Testimony of North Korean defectors. Look on youtibe for North Korean defectors and you will find them explaining the atate of rhe police state, as well as consequences for stepping out of line. This, combined with satellites looking in on North Korean terratory, and fonding these cells, shows the NK goverment for wjat they are. I'm sorry if this video has fooled you, but the people of north korea live in a extremly oppressed manor and visiting the country hardly helps.

As much as I love the fact that Louis wants to present a more positive image of North Korea, what we are all watching is an incredibly sanitised, carefully monitored version of the country. It makes sense that Louis is not mentioning the issues and the politics of the DPRK, even after having returned, but it's important to stay aware of its inherent lack of economic and social parity, and many human rights abuses. Would love to see a video in which this is mentioned, even just to acknowledge it, given that he is now back. That said, fascinating video and top quality content as per. :) EDIT: having watched the outro, I kind of get the message Louis wants to put out here, respect.

It's really infuriating how everyone is commenting saying Louis' being dumb. He obviously knows that not all of North Korea is like that but he's a positive person and he wants to have a good time. I'm sure he's seen stuff that's upsetting there but he can't film it or he'll be punished

While I am really enjoying these N. Korea vlogs, and the country and people are very lovely and kind. I do want us to remember how bad it is there, I understand Louis is only showing the positive (and even if he wanted to show anything else he wouldn't be allowed) please try and keep in mind they are being shown the best of the best so that we think of N. Korea in a better light than what is actually going on in the country. This isn't an attack on Louis, but just a reminder that this isn't what the place is like if you live there.

jpjavip The DPRK is backed in by dozens of US military bases stationed on South Korean soil and more in Japan, has had atrocities such as the Sinchon Massacre by the United states committed to it, and has had foreign journalists make up lies such as the 'Jong-un's uncle executed by pack of 120 dogs'. North Korean healthcare, supermarkets, and schooling is publicly owned, as well as farming alongside collectively owned farms, and the country was experiencing higher growth than the South up to 1976 when it along with the whole Eastern Bloc experienced a steady decline. The Eastern Bloc's collapse led with no surprise to a famine in the country which killed many and whose effects still persist to this day. The US has nearly 800 military bases in 70 different foreign countries, is founded on a massacred Native population which are still persecuted today and go unnoticed by the American media, and has executed 1,400 people since just 1976, not to mention the dozens of dictatorships it supported and supports in the rest of the Americas (Batista, the Argentine last junta, Somoza family, Pinochet) and the world, not to mention the South Korean dictators Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan. It also has invaded Iraq installing a US-friendly government and is intervening in Syria to support the Islamist rebels of the Syrian Opposition, which includes the Islamic Front, Al-Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham, Turkistan Islamic Party in Syria, Jabhat Ansar al-Din and Jund al Aqsa, among others.

The bit where there's no running water - that's standard for most of the country. The taps and showers there are literally just for show. The parts you visited are designed meticulously to appease tourists. To make it appear as if the vast majority of the country isn't starving. Man, I used to know you years ago (Used to be one of Nick's mates.), and it pains me to see you selling out like this. You're not even addressing the insane level of human rights abuses - including imprisoning entire families and sending them to work camps if one person speaks out against their government, or the fact that watching any films, listening to any music, speaking to anyone outside of the NK borders, that's not verified by the government can and WILL get you executed. Hell, they even have a three generation punishment inheritance policy, meaning if you do or say anything against the government, it's not only you that can be executed, but your children AND grandchildren. I get you're most likely trying to show that there're good parts in NK, but the fact is, those good parts are fabricated JUST to dupe tourists. There's not even a disclaimer that you're fully aware of the atrocities that the NK government commits on a day-to-day basis. You can't pretend they don't happen, man. It's an absolutely disgusting regime and you really shouldn't be promoting it like this - especially not without even acknowledging that absolute brutal and inhumane dictatorship the Kim Jong dynasty has imposed.

See that the frat boy is working hard at wooing the nerdy tour guide with rap. Actually the hot and cold water supply in the rooms was the highlight for me. Unique and actually real for a change. Well, maybe as a lucky party member you can afford/own a car. People there are really poor. In the city they use the metro or walk. Some may have a bike. In the more rural areas they walk or use handcars.

We were told that no one can actually buy a car (though there are two or three bilboard advertising some new model of Pyonghwa (peace) cars. You either are assigned one, or given one, or, in theory, you can be given one from outside world relatives or such.

Yeah, but Pyeonghwa is the only company in the country that advertises. There are a few billboards in Pyongyang. And they build less than 1000 cars a year. I'm not saying they could not (even though DPRK restricts private car ownage) buy a car, but when you are not party member or military it is very very unlikely to be able to afford a car and obtain a licence to buy/own one.

Tourists in North Korea DO visit beaches as well. They even have beach resorts that foreign tourists can visit. They also have a skiing resort and I know some people from my country went there to teach North Koreans how to ski. You can also do a home stay there.

The bathroom situation does not seem broken or anything. in fact i think they're using a system similar to japanese bathroom water systems where the sink, bathtub, toilet (and sometimes washing machine) use the same bits of water for their uses to conserve water. aka wash hands, water goes to bathtub then goes to toilet and then flushes down the drain. i highly doubt there'd be no running water in a tourist area because i'm sure there'd be strict regulations about customer service. not to mention you're a foreigner in north korea, i highly doubt they'd send you to a defective tourist area. anyway, the bathing system is that you're supposed to wash yourself outside of the bathtub using that other smaller bucket/pail thing. scrub yourself down and wash your hair then rinse everything off then soak in the bathtub and then once you're down soaking, you rinse off again and then head out. yes, it's VERY different from the western ways. there's usually a drain in the bathroom floor and there's no separate small cubicle for showers. sometimes the toilets would be squat toilets which are just holes in the ground.

Im really looking forward to the final thoughts of Louis after this trip :)

No doubt North Korea is a beautiful place. However, after watching most of these videos; this series can be seen as - at best - naive by not addressing the human right's violations or the corruption at the top of the country or the anti-western logic that dictates how NK responds to each and every news story. Alternatively, this series can be seen as - at worse - propaganda for North Korea's regime. Especially when a lot of young people watch your videos

Please understand that it is a privilege to be able to record in the first place and in order for us to be able to watch his vlogs he has to be very cautious with his words and actions. It may potentially be dangerous if he shows a negative side of the country.

The ocean water circulates clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. At the equator all the ocean water moves westward. So, the water flowing by North Korea is coming from the Philppine Sea and the equator. This is also why the ocean off the coast of California is very cold. It's coming down from Alaska.
