but the machine wasnt really bad. it was just doing what it was supposed to do. it just needed to be programmed to be more amicable to other species. dang, he acted like it was the devil incarnate. Plus, it did say the other species it initially destroyed was trying to take over the star it built the dome around.

I find it ironic that Michael had such an existential breakdown in the “playground era” as to me it gave “Eden” vibes and all I could think is this is the version of Eden where A & E didn’t go the “cerebral” route and eat from the tree of knowledge. Would this not have been the outcome, no “original sin” so it would too only be the path of least resistance, facilitated by the Divine. It definitely made me play around with some concepts. Either way, really dig this story.

  • @arthas640

It sounds like a "happy hell" to me. The AI said it doesn't withhold info but it still keeps the humans as more spoiled pets than sentient, sapient beings. As Michael mentioned "how can they choose any different when they know nothing different". Ironically despite its insistence that it serves humanity it forces its viewpoint and disregards others which implies it may be enforcing that lifestyle on humanity as it makes them easier to control and easier to do whatever it wants without having to worry about dissenting opinions or interference. Seeing how the android said that the catholic church was wiped out by a fascist party, yet later says that it's programming adopted a genocidal attitude to appease the catholic church, and also says the catholic church has ideas opposing those of the AI. That implies that the AI purposefully steered humanity into a position where it held total power over them so that it couldn't conflict with its base programming but still holds godlike power, and it's dismissive attitude makes it sound like it either was somehow involved in the catholic churches demise or that it simply didn't like the idea of anyone challenging its de facto godhood.

I mean tbh, judging by the fact that all the most intelligent species on our planet (humans, chimps, dolphins) are also vicious, violent psychos who use their extra brain power to find more creative ways to kill and sate their sadistic appetites, I largely expect other intelligent life to also be a massive threat to us, and chances are it's probably a "we kill them or they kill us" situation. I used to think otherwise when I was younger, that like someday we'd inevitably develop to get over our violent baser tendencies and work together, and that any advanced species would be like that, but I now see absolutely no reason that will be the most likely outcome. All things considered, the future portrayed in this story is probably a best-case scenario,; it's far, far more likely we'll wipe ourselves out in a nuclear holocaust well before we get there (although maybe *that's* the better outcome, depending on how you see things).

also, like I said above, it has *always* been the case that only a minority of humans actually accomplish things, and yeah, if we create computers to do all of that for us, then those people will probably cease to exist eventually. Intelligence will still exist, it just wont be human anymore. Personally, I think it's more likely that the minority of people who retain the drive to expand their knowledge *will* actually survive in a way, but probably not as humans, probably as cybernetic posthumans of some kind. Personally, I'm already wishing I could go that route, I hate this flesh prison I'm trapped in.

@@splurbi how do you know I don't agree with his politics? You know nothing about me. I just don't want a brilliant narrator who I look up to and spread the word about, to go down a path of political edged stories because fans are too scared to criticise and then we end up with more and more political leanings and fans become hostile to anything they perceive as political outside their sphere so we can only enjoy certain stories... It happens a lot. *** As for the character; no I find it hard to empathise with a character who thinks poorly about people he's supposed to care about (his flock, so to speak) because he knows better politically. That's my whole point - when I don't agree with someone I don't automatically think they're an idiot or wrong. Or make judgement calls about them. Hence my initial response; "yuk".

@@Captain_IdahoYou heard “climate change” and had a knee jerk reaction like every other right wing snowflake in the comment section. Be honest at least. You said “yuk” about the politics, not about the character. The funny thing is that if you hadn’t turned off your reasoning as soon as you heard “climate change” you would probably have understood that that’s not the message of the story. Besides, what type of literature are you consuming? Any literature worth it’s name have politics in it, be it 1984, Brave New World, Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment, etc. Every classic out there has a political and philosophical aspect to it. But you want a world with nothing more than bland escapism and empty entertainment with no thoughts behind it at all. What a shallow and sad perspective to have.

Oh, right, the Catholic Church doesn't exist anymore lmao...how horrible!!! Social institutions and ideologies don't last forever!!! Next thing you'll tell me is that hardly anyone worships the great Allfather Odin anymore lmao. Yeah, kinda sucks that no one cares about the things people now do anymore, but humanity's inevitably going to end one or another eventually, things could go about a thousand ways worse than this. I'm really not saying this to brag, I'm already someone with far above average intelligence (at least that's generally how I've been assessed by others), and let me tell you, it's actually kind of horrible, sometimes I think about huffing butane until my brain melts, like there's a reason so many "gifted" kids turn into drug addicts or kill themselves, I don't think animals were meant to know this much. Inevitably, either we'll build gods or (some of us) will become them, and everyone else will continue to do fuck all, because that's generally kind of how it has always been. Or, we'll just all die. Kind of just how it is, you can either deny it, or make peace with it. Also, don't Christians generally believe that eating from the Tree of Knowledge was a bad thing that doomed us? And that after the apocalypse Jesus will allow us to all live in Paradise again? Like do you think in "Paradise" people are going to be devoting all their time to solving the problems which aren't supposed to exist anymore? Tbh, humans isolating themselves to live in self-contained environments away from nature also seems like a pretty good idea either way, considering we're basically a plague.

I have found anyone on the internet brag about being well above average intelligence invariably turn out to be laughably mid. Dunning Kruger at its finest.

Author ≠ Main character. I don't write wish fulfillment. There is no clear protagonist in this story. The story is either a utopian tale or a dystopian tale depending on the reader's personal beliefs. Although, the idea that nihilism might be the only true nature of the universe (which I personally believe) probably frightens most people, perhaps with the exception of hedonistic utilitarians.

Like others, I almost switched off after the first few minutes. But only because it alluded to an ending I had already envisioned given the current climate amongst hand-wringing God botherers and turd sniffing shouty atheists. I patiently prevailed, though. Just to prove myself right 💪😂
