I liked dubs from this era. It was still new and exciting for the voice actors and you often heard new voices who had various talent but tried earnestly. The acting really gets into a groove as the show goes on. Lain never really loses her trademark social awkwardness even as her separate personalities goad her. Minor characters like the knights are so oddball that each of them get a distinct voice and delivery. By the end the only voice I never thought fit was Alice. She always sounded way too old which gave the scene where she’s caught Janing off that much more awkward and not in a well cast way. Still, watching Lains awkward deadpan lean into the series’ unvoiced creeping horror works better and better with each episode.
@kamenridergnostikos40842 жыл бұрын
Actually, the word "psyche" in this case is not butchered. The story draws heavily from esoteric religion, and "psyche" is spoken as the word written in Greek as in ancient texts - "ψῡχή" or "pshuche" (hard to transliterate in English, but it's pretty much pronounced like Lain says it.) If anything, the butchery was in spelling it "psyche" to begin with. They're not even REALLY the same word - they kind of describe the same thing, but in different connotations. In modern society, the mind or psyche are seen as a product of a brain. In ancient Greek society it was seen much differently - ψῡχή is translated as "The animating principle of a human or animal body, vital spirit, soul, life." Getting the ψῡχή chip was a vital part of awakening to her true self, and started her on the path to transcension. It fits the scenario much better in its original form than transliterated as "psyche."

Akchually, uhm, it is pronounced [psy:'k3:] with a rising tone as per 5th century BCE Attic pronounciation, later it would become [psy'xi] from 4th century bce onwards. [psy'çi] 10th century. So the pshu- part here is wrong, and the stress is unproper.

Silent Hill 2 has some of the best/worst voice acting ever and it works perfectly. They went out of their way to model the characters after their actors, and they cop to them talking so strangely because the characters are strange people. Angela sounds like an adult woman but talks like a kid because she is a kid that has experienced some rough stuff that has aged her beyond her years. James sounds so stilted and awkward because he is a stilted and awkward guy. Meanwhile Mary/Maria has some of the best voice acting I've heard in a game ever.

Bro my favourite thing about lain is her abysmal reaction speed in conversations, “But………… she’s dead?”
Maybe it's just the show itself, but the dialogue felt so distant and lonely... Like cold, hollow words being thrown into the void of this ever-present solitude around Lain... but it was also funny at times!!Of course, you'd see something retro and thought-provoking like this in English! I certainly did!!
In all fairness, this is pretty adherent to the show's tone. The dub isn't wrong, the show is just like this.
I liked dubs from this era. It was still new and exciting for the voice actors and you often heard new voices who had various talent but tried earnestly. Now a days its 12 voice actors who know exactly what Japanese trope their voice fits in and they voice act a similar character they've done a hundred times before.

Baby autistic me loved this show so much. I rewatch it and I feel like I am looking at my own teen experience from the outside. Lain is life. Let's all love Lain.
The dub is weird, but it really fits the whole dream-like surreal vibes the show has.

How is there always some extra layer to this show that is so beyond the grasp of the average person? The biggest wtf moment of the show was the realization that the family were all actors the whole time. Talk about a life changing rug pull.
Only anime where I prefer the dub. The weird, stilted, surreal delivery enhances the experience, and the dub version of, "Look at me, I'm comiting suicide" has haunted me for over two decades.
the lain dub is cast entirely of aliens
i love how depressing lain's voice acting is
In universe it does kinda makes sense that most of the characters could sound like bad actors
I feel like it feels stilted and it fits the show rlly well.
At least from memory, this seems really accurate to the original. All the monotone really fits the show
It’s inhuman, but it reflects the show so perfectly.
I like both the English and Japanese versions. It fits the character very well. shimizu kaori, who did the original, was 15 years old and in the third year of junior high school at the time. This was her first job as a voice actress. She also does game voices.
The atmospheric weirdness makes me want to live again
I'm convinced the blandness of Lain is intentional solely because of anti-Lains voice acting. It's so much more energetic and psychotic and it perfectly juxtaposes Lain of the world and anti-Lain
I love when the limitations of stuff actually matches the artistic intent In this case, abstract and psychedelic psychological horror anime matching with the stilted and awkward line deliveries seen in 90s anime Shit, that was a mouthful
I like lain's voice in english dub, it's really unique and satisfying to hear

Silent Hill 2 has some of the best/worst voice acting ever and it works perfectly. They went out of their way to model the characters after their actors, and they cop to them talking so strangely because the characters are strange people. Angela sounds like an adult woman but talks like a kid because she is a kid that has experienced some rough stuff that has aged her beyond her years. James sounds so stilted and awkward because he is a stilted and awkward guy. Meanwhile Mary/Maria has some of the best voice acting I've heard in a game ever.
