The character voices are so bland I fell asleep multiple times watching it. It’s like they are so jaded that they don’t care about anything and have given up on life. It plods so slowly and I furiously yelled ‘Just do something’ a million times.

It was never confirmed tbf. I think she's just supposed to be weird and not human like most people her age or gender. Like she sticks out from the rest and the revelation at the end makes sense as she never was human to begin with but craved normality in her life. That also explains the type of behavior she has, because she doesn't knows better what humanity is or being part of it.

In my journey of 15+ years of watching anime, I never seen Serial Experiments Lain, the only thing I have seen up until now are all the memes created by the community about the show... and really they are starting to spark my curiosity to watch it, lmao.

Yeah, this is why you shouldn't watch dub anime. Just watch the sub. Lain does alright with her stilted and awkward way of pausing her sentences since she's not used to human interaction, but holy crap, the other actors are real bad at conveying what the scene is supposed to and the translation/mouth animation line up just don't flow. I don't even remember the dialogue being this bad for the English dub, but here we are. It's almost unbearable. I have never found an English dub that's better than sub (except Ghost Stories).

as a kid seeing this by the end of the show I thought it was because Lain had basically been projecting behavior onto everyone unconsciously, and she couldnt actually handle that much detail of control but i mean, lol. it still fits though
