It was a truly unbelievable day at Wembley Stadium, got there at 0530 queued for about 3 hours then sprinted for the front slowing down at each line of stewards, and landed up 10 feet from the stage in the middle and spent the next 10 ish hours in the same spot on an extremely hot and humid day. Some fans at the front were getting pulled out with heat exhaustion and they were spraying us with water. As your Video showed they filled the time with other acts inbetween the main ones but the interaction from Freddie pulled everybody in and I was definitely hooked from that day forward, I even made it onto the Live Aid Video lol Thanks Pikles

My favorite story about organizing the show was one Geldof told. He said he called Freddie & told him “it’s the perfect stage for you.” When Freddie asked why, Geldof informed him, “Bc it’s the world.”

'These are the days of our lives', recorded at the end of Freddie's time with Queen is just so poignant and well worth a listen.

Why were they so good on that day well......1 they chose the right songs and played them in the right order....2 As with all bands on the day they had 20 minutes, they rehearsed and got the timing spot on....3 They had something no other band had...Freddie Mercury...what could go wrong..........

The reference to audience participation in soccer stadiums... "We will Rock you" was written specifically to make the audience a "fifth" member of the band during a concert. That, coupled with so many other great audience participation songs (Radio GaGa, We Will Rock You, etc) AND Freddie's legendary ability to engage the audience made them THE live act to beat.

Freddie and Queen wrote and sung the soundtracks to the films Flash Gordon and Highlander you should check them out.

My memory of it was that everyone who came before looked unprepared, amateurish and frankly boring. The whole day up until then was more a 'happening' than a concert. Queen came out and were electric. Professional and entertaining as they should be. They just showed how amateurish everyone else was

That movie at the beginning was 'Flash Gordon'

Was lucky enough to see them in 1986 in Newcastle at the football ground. It rained all bloody day but they were still great and gave it everything. By far the best concert I have ever been to.

Excellent - Thank you, I needed something to lift my spirits this weekend.... and the best way to do that is with a Queen (Live Aid reaction) Freddie wasn't diagnosed with AIDS until 1987. That guy is the amazing bass player John Deacon - why was this Queen performance the best? Quite simply, they rehearsed, where others didn't.

Hey, thanks for reading my comment ! 😀 Just so you know, as you explore their music, another common theme is how their music genre changed over the years. Their first two albums were very prog rock, then they moved into more harmony experimentation for the next three, after that, each album was very different from the last. Freddie said he was always changing it up because he hated being bored. He told his band mates when he was nearing the end to do whatever they wanted with his unreleased music, but don't ever make it boring.

"Flash" is a great, albeit silly & very fun movie.

Flash Gordon is glorious.

The comment about soccer stadiums was about Queen quite uniquely having experience in playing in those huge stadiums around the world, and separately because of that realised the importance of encouraging crowd participation. It’s more the norm now but these things weren’t so much back then

One of the reasons for Queens popularity was due to Brian May. At the time of Live Aid he was easily one of the best guitarists in the world.. His performance was a sheer masterclass of what a guitar can do. He is also a great songwriter he wrote We Will Rock You because noticed there weren't many of Queens songs the audience can join in with. Now one of their greatest hits.

I was fortunate to be there that baking hot day and to this day it’s the best performance I’ve ever seen !

The reaction to the scene from Flash Gordon was priceless! Never really agreed with the 'Queen slump' narrative. Hot Space was a flop (by Queen standards), but the album they did prior to Live Aid 'The Works' had some of their biggest hits, and was a genuine big seller. It might be that they felt uninspired, but the music didn't show it. Also the narrator says 'they were the only group to find a way to play all their hits', which clearly isn't true since they had lots of other big hits they didn't play.

I watched it on tv in 1985. It was great and wueen were fantastic. Freddie is definately the best showman I've ever seen and wueen tge best live group. I enjoyed your post.

It was massive! The whole day with just the best. Never forget that day.

That film they did the soundtrack for was Flash Gordon. A Sci Fi adventure. One of their albums is the sound track of the film. The title track Flash, is often played. It's got some dramatic snatches of dialogue from the film, on the record. At the concert they had a revolving stage, so they could add the kit for the following band at the back while a band was performing at the front. Unfortunately it went wrong for Paul McCartney because as it spun his piano round to the front, a power lead snagged and got pulled out. So hardly anyone heard the first half of his opening song, before a roadie located the fault and reconnected it. I did hear on another documentary that queen upped the volume of the amps above what Wembley had said should be the max. Their crowd ineraction skills, getting the crowd to respond to calls, stamping, clapping and waving, was something the band had done a lot of when they toured South America and played a lot of football stadiums down there. A lot of the authorities limited the shows to just a couple of large events, so they could be policed and controlled. They were suspicious of rock bands stirring up their youth, they didn't want any incitement to revolution played out. Responding to Freddie's calls, and clapping transcended any language barriers.

I am old enough to have sat up all night watching this (I'm from Oz) . It was a wonderful concert well worth sitting up all night with a gallon of coffee.

‘Love of my Life’ at Montreal is worth a watch too. It’s a different ‘Somebody to Love’ - the version you were singing was a great bit of psychedelia from Jefferson Airplane

it was the glam rock era in the 70's. As time went on, fashion changed, they grew up. I believe to this day, they have sold more records than the beatles. Queen and Adam Lambert are still going and new generations love them.

What I meant - and I hope to express myself better this time - is that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, bands usually played in gyms/arenas, with a reduced audience. The Queen doesn't. Queen had already performed several times in football stadiums - or scoccer stadiums - during a South American tour and in other countries. The band was already familiar with crowds. In addition, it encouraged audience participation in several songs such as Love of My Life, Another One Bites the Dust, Radio Gaga, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions and vocal exercises. That experience was an advantage over the other artists. By the way, the song Is This the World We Created...? it was only released on the album The Works (1984) and as the B-side of a single, therefore not known to the general public.

@@SoGal_YT Sure, but few bands could fill stadiums back then. The Beatles' estimated audience at Shea Stadium was 55,000 people. Over the years, the audience grew larger. In 1981, Queen took 130,000 and 120,000 in two consecutive days of performances at the Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo. Months before Live Aid, Queen won over a mixed audience of 250,000 at the band's first performance at the Rock in Rio Festival (1985). The performance of Love of My Life at this festival is a perfect example of the band's interaction with the audience (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZagvJSdoq6xYbA.html).

Montreal live someone to love was amazing performance that will leave you amazed.

8:35 - That's John Deacon ('Deacy') the bass player - Might be familiar if you've seen the recent 'Bohemian Rhapsody' movie. Deacy is played by the guy who played the young boy 'Tim' in the first Jurassic Park movie... but by the time he played Deacy in Bohemian Rhapsody he is the SPITTING IMAGE of Deacy. Been a Queen fan all my life (I'm 59 now) and I was actually at the Live Aid concert when I was 21 (It's possible to pick me out in the crowd during 'Crazy Little Thing..').... and when watching the movie I was stunned at how much the actor looked like Deacy - The others were made up to show a passing resemblance, but Joseph Mazello, as Deacy looked so much like him it was spooky.

Queen also provided soundtrack music to The Highlander (1986) starring Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert, It's A Kind of Magic, Princes of the Universe and of course Who Wants to Live Forever, written by May. And then there was of course Freddie's 1992 Olympic theme song Barcelona co-written with Mike Moran, a spectacular duet with Barcelona opera singer Monsterrat Caballé. Truly outstanding band and frontman.

You should watch the film (movie) about Queen if it’s available in the US. After the loss of Freddy, Brian May finished his PHD in astrophysics which was half way through when queen started in the early 70’s and is Dr May, and he is heavily involved in environmental/animal welfare issues.

Until the O2 Stadium (formerly the Millennium Dome) was built in 1999 as a "temporary" structure for millennium celebrations, the ONLY stadiums we had in the UK were soccer stadiums!

A lot of the other artists used it as a advert for there new material where as Queen just sang there classics so people knew the songs and could sing along.

I remember the famine, it was horrific. It's weird thinking back to being a kid at that time in Britain. There were a lot of union disputes, the Cold War threat and seeing kids dying from malnutrition in Africa. People were much more vocal for sure. I didn't watch much TV (most people didn't) and I think I went to the local leisure centre on the day Live Aid happened? Not because I didn't care about the cause, more because none of the music interested me. Queen were kinda like dad rock, very commercial, not too risky. Late seventies until mid eighties I was into Two Tone and a lot of the BBC Peel Sessions. There's a good documentary called "Two Tone Britain" that explains that era really well and I'm guessing you have no idea what Two Tone is? Sadly, John Peel passed away but he was an absolute legend regarding showcasing interesting music.

There's a really excellent two part documentary you should watch called Queen: Days of Our Lives all about the history of the band up until Freddie's death. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Keep in mind, this concert was 10 years after Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody, of course styles change.

BTW, one thing they didn't mention here re. Queen's "rut" or downswing in popularity prior to Live Aid: In 1984, Queen had decided to make what turned out to be a highly controversial move, to go to South Africa and perform a month of concerts... despite the highly charged political climate there. Ultimately, the guys were all intelligent businessmen and they ran Queen as a business, and - although of course they were passionate about creating good music - Freddie did refer to making records as delivering "product".... and they just thought of going to tour South Africa as a money-making business decision... which BACKFIRED. I think I even remember seeing video interview of other musicians saying that Queen should be boycotted afterwards! So, this probably has something to do with Freddie's comment about "giving back" and doing something good at Live Aid.

The Flash song which was shown when they were talking about film soundtracks was made for a sci-fi film called Flash Gordon. The film Bohemian Rhapsody is worth a watch, although it takes liberties with timeline stuff, for instance it has him finding out he has AIDS before the Live Aid concert which he didn't. It wasn't particularly anything to do with popularity per se Queen had just been quite quiet for a while since around 1982. Queen was always popular plenty large enough fanbase.

They jusy finished a 7 month world tour for the works over a 9 month period They didnt tour the us do Freddie finished his solo album end of 84 instead then carried on they finished the tour may 85 They did have a lot of bad press for doing sun city

Hello SoGal and Roger. I did not watch the concert. As a 17 year old I passed through London that day, off to tour Europe by train. I imagined it would be stars from the previous decade, that had been great ten years before. Funny this video fit with the same narrative. I did not start looking back and hated this retrospective at the time. When work colleagues, who did enjoy this in the way it described, went to the Freddie tribute concert, I could see they were wanting to be part of an event. They could not understand why I preferred to remember enjoying the music in the 1970s when I had it on a cassette, but had moved on and preferred dance music. For me a group like Stone Roses would be more memorable, though typically I had gone back over to Yorkshire just as the Manchester music scene kicked off. I did feel like I was the first wearing a hoody back there though. These days there are thousands who look back nostalgically to Stone Roses concerts. I have only found clips on KZread. The big thing with them is you had to be there.

Sarah, I just had recommended a video of West Ham United fans singing God Save The Queen. You may remember I suggested you might choose to follow them from seeing the East End Londoners in The World at War. Same spirit on display in the football stadium atmosphere as per your question. As a northerner, you tend to see southerners as posh, but not these folk, yet they are terribly loyal fans of the actual Queen.

Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara, a Zoroastrian in East Africa and lived there and in India until age 18. I suspect that his origins very close to Ethiopia may have given him great insight into the famine there.

No matter where Queen went people knew the words and sang along with the Band. Many of Queen’s songs are Anthems. You really should watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

OK, look, I'm all for artistic licence, to keep the movie moving along, and yes, it wasn't a documentary, we could watch These Are The Days Of Our Lives, however, for the younger generations who thinks its a true reflection of history, will believe that Freddie was a sad lonely diva, who kicked Jim Beach out of a New York cab, broke up Queen to go solo, and came snivelling back, with his tail between his legs, too do Live Aid. When none of the above was true. I suppose the dead can't defend themselves can they? Funny, how certain remaining members, were portrayed in a better light. And conveniently, there's no mention of playing in 84, in Sun City. So the "we haven't played in years" line, spun by Roger, in the film, covers that nicely.

The Flash Gordon movie was made around 1980 but the film production paid serious homage to the 1930's american series, starring the magnificently named Buster Crabbe. That is why the both the effects and style of acting look really weird for the period. Hey Hon, Just an FYI about the Bohemian Rhapsody movie (because I know you’re getting recommendations to watch it): It really should’ve had a preface at the beginning that read “Inspired by actual events, but LOTS of creative license used!” ….Just to clue viewers in that - while entertaining - it is NOT an accurate biography. The film is FULL of timeline inaccuracies, and some events were basically fabricated to keep the film “engaging”. So, go ahead and watch it - it IS entertaining - but definitely also take a look at one or more of the really WELL-done, FREE documentaries about Freddie & Queen available on YT.

Yeah, Freddie didn't sack Jim Beach or break up Queen to go solo. But they did play Sun City at the height of apartheid, but the causal fan isn't supposed to know 😉.

There is one glaring error in the video you showed - Queen were not on the wane, they had just come off a huge world tour in 1984 with The Works - not Hot Space. They had just had big hit singles with Radio Ga Ga and I Want to Break Free. They were taking a pause to have a break when Geldof called them.

If you would like to know more about the events leading up to Live Aid I would recomend watching the documentary "Live Aid Against All Odds". It's a two part 3 hour program covering the news report from Ethiopia, how Band Aid and USA for Africa came about and the struggle to make Live Aid happen. Warning the footage from the news reports are emotional

I lived and worked as an engineer in development aid in Ethiopia from 1978 to 1986. This was in the years of the Red Terror. I lost several expat friends to road accidents and illness, murder. My duty station was Nazeth (now Adama) the drive from Addis was around 100k. Many times I had to pass through 15/20 road checks manned by armed peasants. A regular site was dead bodies on the side of the road, hands tied with a notice saying "Anti Revolutionary" Whilst those who performed in the live aid concerts did a wonderful job their careers also gained from it. There was plenty of Halo polish to go round.

2 billion was probably about 1/3 of the entire planet at that point

In respect of short mike stand, cannot recall who has used that idea since (Justin of The Darkness ?) Rod Stewart when in the Faces would twirl etc full stand and base.

They nearly didn't do it aswell so there documentary said,there manager at the time didn't think it was worth it however Freddie said we should and si it was to be.

The story behind the Live Aid gig was that every band had a 10 minute slot, but the creator Bob Geldof that people piled into Wembley stadium for the free concert and not butting their hands in their pockets to donate cash to the corse. For the first 5 hours of the concert Geldof realised that they had only raised about £1.5million for the corse, and he interrupted a Tv interview at the gig and demanded that people put their hands in their pockets and donate, just before Queen came on stage. When Freddie had got the whole crowed at Wembley in the palm of his hand the money started to pour in. After Queens 10 minutes was up Geldof told his production crew to keep the band on stage for longer.

Breian May co-wrote a book with our Royal astronomer Sir Martin Rees about the Universe (obviously) as also being an astrophysicist ( not an idiot) but another claim to fame.

Interesting, MONOLOGO, reminds me of the Greek word ΜΟΝΟΛΟΓΟΣ (MONOLOGOS) meaning that someone talks all by himself, or makes a very long speech. Of course, the word could apply to a commentator that analyses events by himself, or a politician that talks in public alone without a debate on what he says etc. The meaning of the word MONOLOGOS is not bad, it literally means speaking alone (from the words ΜΟΝΟΣ-alone and ΛΟΓΟΣ-speech). It indicates someone who talks excessively or expresses an opinion alone, or that he takes the lead and does not leave any time for anybody else to speak in a conversation. I wonder if the word on the shirt is related.

No, Freddie may well have had Hiv at this point, BUT got his Hiv diagnosis Easter 87, about six months after Queens last concert

Of course it was not the best show ever. It even was not the best show of the whole concert but Queen were great live band and when they had good day they were almost unbeateble. I´ve heard they live bootlegs from seventies and they really were.

The movie you did not recognise was "Flash Gordon" (1980), it was really a terrible film with only Queen's music and Brian Blessed's performance saving it from total obscurity.

Difference in American and British English. We'd treat Queen as a singular entity - a band. The British seem to treat collective groups as plural. I didn't discover this until I started doing videos and noticed the difference. For Americans it would be weird to say "were."

U2 were the best band at Wembley Stadium that day.

I know you like the educational side of your channel, so allow me to be get a bit intellectual. During Radio GaGa, you can actually WATCH the speed of sound in action. If you watch the crowd, you cam see the clapping go from front to back in a wave, the folks at the back are still perfectly in time with the band, they just hear the band later than the front. Cool huh? Great music AND science who'da thunk it lol

I've never been a fan, never bought a record, but at Live Aid Freddie was on fire 🔥 I think he was so into it, that he created something genuinely magical. As regards the rest of the band - meh.

U2 were better.

It's weird, my father, and uncle are very racist, and homophobic, and I don't mean they just joke around about it, they are hostile with any minor inconvenience, but they both loved Freddy, even watching him skip around shirtless with the tightest, and shortest boy shorts ever made. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure they know Freddy was bisexual, but they tolerated his flamboyancy.
