I Haven't Been This Enamored About A Guitar In Years - Danelectro U2

James Ivey has brought over his Danelectro U2 for me to have a look at, and to be honest I've been dreaming about this guitar ever since.
When it first appeared in '56, the U2 made a big impression for its use of twin lipstick pickups wired in series rather than in parallel. With its coil wrapped around an Alnico VI magnet and then wrapped in tape, these pickups harken back to the vintage tone of rock's earliest days. The result is a tone that truly stands alone - jangly, midrange punch and treble kick. This unique sound and the playability of the U2 has won over numerous legends in rock including Ronnie Wood, Steve Perry, and Mark Knopfler. It has also made the U2 a much sought after axe in the world of surf rock. And with a 3-way pickup selector and master volume and tone control, you will have lots of options for dialing in your tone.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I have used a U3 for the past 25 years to record and gig. It has this 5-point setting switch that blends and mixes the three lipstick pickups. I love it. You can shove it under a steam roller pick it up and it's still in tune.

Danos are ace, even with the compromises in hardware. Great company backstory too. But the lipstick pickups on a hollow light weight body are something else entirely. Think the middle position puts the pair in series, so the output is higher and I gather it’s hum- cancelling too. The colour might be ‘peach’... First reissue Korean made Dano U2s from the mid-late 90s are where it’s at.

Holy crap!!! I never had to try so hard not to hate someone for their good fortune :) That is treasure! I waited a couple years for a late 90s U1 to pop up...........and got my deep purple keeper. I just commented on another vid: I loved the tone Greta Kline (Frankie Cosmos) was getting, and every other Danelecto/ Silvertone I heard. I literally waited a couple years for one of these to pop up, and had finally got an awesome condition deep purple one and love it. It's a keeper. Like most in vids I've seen, the steel bridge plate had collapsed quite a lot. First string change I left it alone because I was ecstatic just to have retained really sweet intonation given the unique rosewood saddle. I just did only it's second string change in a couple years and decided to flatten the steel plate. Of course the rosewood saddle was warped also. I soaked it a while then used a hot iron to work the bottom flat again. Also, I used a digital caliper to gauge the exact location of the saddle on the plate before I removed it. I'm totally satisfied with my job well done. My U1 still pulls tone out of nowhere. I literally get tones that aren't even from where I'm fretting. It's magic!

I just picked up the Blue Suede U2 and it is in the mail right now. 20 Years ago, I had the chance and I took a Kasuga Strat instead. I don't regret my decision, but I sure cannot wait to have them both :) Glad you found yours. They really are a treat.

Just had a similar experience. I am fortunate enough to own some high end guitars but bought a squier esquire for £299 January sales. From the factory the set up was horrific but resetting the neck and setting it up properly it plays amazingly. Fret work is better than some £1000+ guitars I have owned. Needless to say, like you, I am in love with a "budget" guitar. Your guitar sounds amazing.. and if it plays well and inspires then that's all you can wish for. Spot video guys.

Good call? You are very fortunate. Enjoy. I have a U1 with this type of bridge. I think most of them have the steel plate collapse a bit. I left mine that way for a long time, but just now flattened it and the bottom of the saddle out with a string change successfully. Love it, and it's a keeper.

  • @garyives1218

@@hunterpyron2535 I just thought of this now! Don't remove all the strings at once. Try changing out 1 string at a time. If you have a problem keeping the new string in place in the bridge, pull it tight into the bridge and wrap a string or zip-tie around it and the neck to hold it in place until you get it secured into the tuner the way you'd like. When you remove all the strings at once, the bridge can shift around freely, and the rosewood saddle may (but probably won't) shift also, which could cause intonation issues. I've only changed the strings twice on this guitar and both times I removed all the strings at once.....LOL

I bought my son that eaxct guitar in the 90s for $350 AUD with a 15 Watt Danelectro amp. The Dirty Thirty amp is the really good one that a luthier friend of mine has. They were made in Korea then- China now, but that series were really well made. I love it and made a perloid white pickguard that goes under the clear- he likes that, I like the original. If you're after a low cost guitar a Dano is the one to get. Used by Joe walsh,Tom Petty in the Travelling Wilbury's ( see End of the Line on KZread). Rick beato also reviews them as a must have , Zac Childs also. A later release used was a Black Double cut in 1959 -now moderately valuable and much sought after. Yep, a Dano'll do me. At 110 pounds plus tax that's just over $200 AusD . You got a good buy. Do not sell as they are now worth 3-6 times what I payed. They'll keep going up. Danelectro are still producing new re-issues of the DC. Check out ebay for prices and details ( Badass bridge not that piece of Rosewood.

Is it really necessary for everyone who reviews these guitars to put them down near the bottom of everything in life while pretending to say something is unique about them? Kinda like people saying they hated Trump and don't want him back but saying things were better with Trump than with Biden. BTW those guitars cost between $400 and $500 so let's not act like they come free in a box of cereal. What that guitar proves is that expensive hardware isn't the only route to a good sounding guitar.
