In the first two minutes watching your video, I discovered your mistake in cutting off the stems. Since the leaves are not yet dried up you could harvest the tuber and cover up the top of the yam to produce yam seeds. Take note next time!

Ok now , I just finished watching your candid video. As a farmer's son and a part time farmer myself I advise you don't harvest too early next time. If you plant in February you should harvest from September upward. The late you harvest the better the chances of tuber getting bigger. Wish you best of luck next time.

@@lifecoachmary Don't be discouraged. To me ,Planting yams in bags is the best at this jet age. I have compared it with the conventional methods and find out it is much better. Presently I planted over 2500 in bags in march and about 600 in heaps. I harvested 5 tubers days and they were very fantastic. I used organic (decomposed chicken drops) and inorganic (15,15,15 and supergro) fertilizer to boost the plants at the appropriate time. Shalom!

Wow, thank you so much for sharing with me techniques that you have been utilizing. And for the encouraging words. I really do appreciate it.
I feel u harvested too early. the leaves are still fresh meaning the yam is still growing. Also because you are planting in bags, try applying rabbit manure.

Yes, I actually think so too. But because i had tomatoes and other plants, the yam leaves were taking over the entire space and preventing the other plants from getting sunshine. So, i made the decision to harvest the 2 plants at that time. Yes, I will add more manure in my next trial. Thank you!

Yes
😊 My parents planted in bags as well, but the results were the same as yours but a lot better. These were the questions I asked my Mum; Were there enough sunlight for the plants leaves? Hint yam is a sun loving plant Second questn. From which session were the bigger tubbers harvested? The session exposed to light or low light. This would give us understanding on our next approach. We should not be discouraged from trying, we would never know these outcomes unless we try. Thank you Madam for your contribution.

Weldone madam. I think you needed to allow the leaves wither before harvest. My brother does sac planting alot and his yields are always very big. He will be harvesting soon, if he hasn't, and I hope he will upload this time.

Thank you! I thought that the leaves were quite an indicator of the tuber too. Yes, I added some manure. I will try again next year and check what is missing now. Learning points
I think the only am is not yet matured for harvest, the leave are still I'll green you need to let the leaves go brown or turn yellow and dry up and then the soil work lf have been cracking and the bags would have even thorn before you harvest And maybe you should also apply some fertilizer. I have planted Yam in sack before and it did well

Please can you help me out, my yam rooted about 2 feet high on the room ground do I need to cut the rooted tail before I plant it
You harvested too early and always let the bags be exposed to sunshine, don't keep the bags under shades. These are the major reasons. I salute your courage 💪.

Yam vines must dry off completely before harvesting
When did you plant d yams? Why didn't you wait 4 d leaves to dry before you harvested the yams?
@lifecoachmary

I planted them in February. The more reason why i had to harvest them at this time was because the leaves were so much and preventing the other plants from getting sunlight. I still have 5 yam plants left. I will leave those ones for longer and observe if this makes a difference. Thank you for your comment!

What's the ratio of manure to soil you used?
@lifecoachmary
2 жыл бұрын
I used about 10percent manure. The soil is quite a fertile soil. I am suspecting the sack has large holes and most of the nutrients easily seep out especially when it rains heavily.
How many months does it take yam before havest thanks.

I planted the yam seedlings in February and harvested in July. Approximately 6 months. I suspect the bags are too porous and allow the nutrients in the soil to leach away. Thank you for your comment.

@@lifecoachmary I think six months is a bit too early. You should have waited for seven to eight months. Secondly, don't eat the seedlings you harvested this season, plant them whole and also ensure you use a bigger and longer sack. I assure you'll have a better harvest when you harvest those tiny seedlings on your hands now.

Ok. I appreciate your comment.
You harvested it prematurely, it han not even finished growing. Yams leaves will turn yellow or even dry up to show that they are matured to be harvested. You dont look at the period you planted but the response of the yam you planted
@lifecoachmary

Yes! There was a reason for the early harvest though. I appreciate your feedback.
Where you did badly is that you don't harvest yam until most of the green leaf's starts becoming yellowish or even brownish, sometimes with spots on it, that means for this yam you are so posed to wait longer than now.
@lifecoachmary

Thank you! I agree the harvest was untimely. And I explained the reason in the video. However, I appreciate you giving me the feedback. And for the remaining yam plants in bag, I will definitely leave them for longer.

@@lifecoachmary I started planting in sacks this year and am experiencing similar challenge. I decided to wait till full maturity before harvesting especially as i wish to do commercial yam in sack cultivation next year. lessons learnt will be invaluable for next season planting.
