I have used these ingredients with some success in the culture of several vegetable, and flower types, and have substituted about 100 ml of feed-grade blackstrap molasses in place of the sugar. Adding some urea or manure tea may be helpful, too, and i sometimes also add a gram or two of boric acid powder.

Here in the PNW, we have a terrible slug problem. Slugs are attracted to the yeasty smell of yeast and water, and can be trapped using these ingredients. Some say that yeast traps are more effective than chemical attractants and can last longer.

It's interesting that the EM formula for making your own effective microbes starts out with getting the yeast in the air and rice and then you put that in milk and then you add sugar to that in the form of molasses. Sounds very similar and what you're trying to do is grow the yeast

In winter as children we used to make a glass of yeast with a half teaspoon of sugar and put it on the windowsill at night. In the morning we drank it before breakfast. Delicious the foam and all. Not every day but regularly. I did the same with my children. I do not know what it did for us or my children but we were and still are all healthy. My mothers family had done this also as children.

I was taught to take a teaspoon of potato starch, scratch it into the soil. Then water the plant with the yeast water. It gives the yeast something to break down into the nutrients the plants need. I do that when transplanting the plants into the garden. On the wood ash, I add that into my soil directly at the end of the growing season. It gives it the winter to break down into the micronutrients the plants need for the next year's crop.

May you consider also adding some type of clay soil or even some bentonite clay to your soil to slow down your sandy soil's absorption rate and loss of fertilized water? That and keep your soil deeply mulched with wood chips or crushed dried leaves and other natural sources of weed seed free dried plant material as a covering for your soil. I have clay soil in my area and have used spent peat moss that lined my rabbits cages as litter adding this combination of rabbit manure and urine mixed with the peat moss in my soil as helped the drainage of my soil. I don't know if you're interested in rabbits, but I would guess that peat moss could also help slow down the loss of water in your sandy soil.

IMPORTANT UPDATE on the end of my comment! Thanks for sharing this with your viewers! I used yeast with sugar water before on tomatoes I had outdoor without any rain protection. I mulched the ground with hay and fertilized it with this yeast sugar water mix. It was really boosting the plant and the plant became pretty sturdy almost like rubbe. After the plant was tall I gave them a plein "tomato sauce" (without any spices or meat of course) just straight out of the jar and the plant started blooming like crazy. I had six tomato plants packed on one square meter (120x80 cm) palet frame raised bed - it wasn't meant to be that way, but I received the plants before their spot was ready so I "parked" them in a 1 square meter raised bed. I had no chance to move them into another place because they grow faster than I was ready with the other spot. So, it turned into a little tomato jungle and all plants were packed with tomatoes. I have them also powdered egg shell, but mine didn't get any wood ashes, because I didn't have any. I was able to pick tomatoes until October , in October this plant illness developed, I don't know the English word for it, it usually happens, when the plant gets too wet, if you know what I mean. Greetings from Germany! UPDATE:: Just put out this homemade fertilizer yeast and sugar water to boost my plants in my new garden, where the plants aren't doing too great this year. Seems like the summer skips our area this year - so far we only had a few nice sunny days for this year, the most of the time since May it was way too cold and it is very wet this year here in our area of Germany (near Luxemburg and French border). So, it is raining again since a couple of days and I just went to the new garden area on the other side of town to put out the homemade fertilizer (which I had forgotten about until I have seen this video again) and so I put the fertilizer under the plants and it was like a magnet for the slugs, they came running from all sides. I only have a small vegetable garden patch of about 10 square meter in this new garden on the other side of town and I was collecting about 20 slugs within 10 minutes after applying this yeast fertilizer. I don't kill the slugs, even though I don't like them, I drove them outside of town to the woods 🙈. So, I wouldn't use it again, if it is so wet and cold like this year or I would probably wait for a hot sunny day and try how it will work on a sunny morning when high temperatures are expected . I heard before that beer will attract slugs, looks like the yeast and sugar have the same effect on them.
