You're suffering from old school mental problem. I planted in both bags and heaps and the bags yields are fantastic than that of heaps that requires more stress and space occupation.

It can yield well, I do it also here in UK with potatoes, but the problem with what he did is that he planted them so deep, do you know that here some people produce vegetables just in fluid. Just mix the right nutrients. Agriculture has gone hi-tech.
