    If you didn't get all the information, those mistakes fall onto whoever gave you the puzzle. That being said, it's still an impressive puzzle for the developer's first time, and I too hope to see more. Something I've learned with making puzzles with Lego's is it's a big learning process and skill to make good puzzles. One of those skills is to you learn how to protect the solver from making such mistakes even when such related information is missing.

  • @currentlypooping

    @currentlypooping

    Personally, I blame the puzzle maker (no offense or anything but they can use this as a learning scenario). You should never have a hole in similar size to a tool that you use if you do not want people to put the tool in that hole. A note saying "don't put a pin in the holes on the bottom" is not enough, especially when there's no markings for what the top and bottom of the puzzle are. You could say that the lock side is the top cause it can't be placed nicely if it's the bottom but it could be the side and there is an arrow so maybe that's pointing to the top (which would make the bottom not the bottom)? Instructions are not clear if there can be multiple ways to interpret them. The solution here is to just not have that hole there or make it bigger so the tools can come back out or block it in some way (assuming it's there to let air in so things don't stuck), solder/weld a little tiny rod across the hole to act like a screen. Never assume people wont do what they shouldn't, just don't let people do things they shouldn't. Puzzle solvers are going to try anything they can solve a puzzle, especially in a moments of frustration or confusion. It's very possible that even if he had received and read that, it is forgotten about for a second and that's enough to ruin the entire puzzle, potentially forever. That's not good especially for something that's probably fairly expensive given it's a machined block of metal. Additionally, "no outside tools" includes googling. Why would anyone know the combo is supposed to be the year a movie (which this puzzle is not titled after) came out. The proper way to do that would be to write a story like "The movie Free Willie, which was released in 1993, is about a whale...." in the instructions. ALL of the information needed to solve a puzzle should, in some way, come with the puzzle. Just saying. It was a cool puzzle though and aside from that hole it was very well crafted!

I just don't understand the email excuse, it makes me kind of doubt you sold him the puzzle in the first place. You lose either way, if you did you're an idiot, if you didn't you're a liar.

    @@currentlypooping Ideally yes i think puzzles should be made in a way to be fool proof. It is a nice puzzle, but marks do come off for allowing a fail state. IMO instructions are not sufficient and a mechanical design fix should have been implemented. simply changing the size of the holes or rods could have easily prevented a broken puzzle. What a shame.

    I didn't think the lock combination was fair either. The hint leading to the answer for that was extremely vague. Also, a puzzle like this shouldn't have this many rules for things that will potentially break the puzzle when you should be allowed to experiment and try things out. If there's a hole in the bottom that could end up having a piece stuck in it that should have been addressed with something covering the hole or maybe the pin could have been made to be a different shape so it couldn't fit inside.

    I'm not sure about 1993, aside from the fact that there was a printing of Moby Dick that year. Ishmael, the main character, takes his name from the Biblical Ishmael who was cast away from his father Abraham. In the book, Ishmael is "cast away" as the only survivor after Moby Dick attacks the ship, killing his Abrahamic father figure, Captain Ahab. Moby Dick was Ahab's (the figurative Abraham) whale. Ishmael floats to rescue on a coffin- I don't know if that is at all relevant but the enclosed box of the puzzle made me think of that.

    If you haven't sent the puzzle back yet, you could retrieve the brass rod by using a bent paper clip (to expose an end), dab the tip in some super glue (so it's ONLY on the tip, not the sides), hold it to the brass rod till it dries. This should be enough to pull it out, after which you can easily snap of them apart.

  • @bobsd387

    @bobsd387

    IMHO this is more likely to wick between the brass rod and the case, permanently gluing the rod in place.

    Picked up on Free Willy year of release as soon as you mentioned the movie. Fun to watch you mess it up not with the tiny pin, but with the magnet and needing the tiny pin to release it. I immediately said “oh no! You used the tiny pin to get that magnet out” as soon as the magnet was put back in.

    I don't think its very good design to make a pretty random piece of information a part of solving the puzzle. Also a very rookie puzzle design mistake to have such an easy way of getting the puzzle permanently stuck like that hole.

    The whole start of the solve i was screaming twist the lock to unscrew. Then i thought just figure out the combo the hard way. Finally you did. After i figured you needed to pull the lock apart. 1993 whale was a coin that also referenced the Bermuda. that came from me thinking of the arrow. plus it showed up or down in my mind, atleast a way the pin should be moved. ill leave it at that so you have to wath the video to see what takes place, but I love the puzzle solves. Please have more epics to come.

    What is "Free Willy"? Why the hell would every solver know that? Why would they be required to know it? They SHOULDN'T. The idea of puzzles in general is for them to be solvable by as many people as possible, not by a specific cohort, born in a specific period of time, having knowledge about a specific subject.

    To all the puzzle creators out there - Internet IS a tool. Stop making puzzles which require us to browse the Internet! Stop incorporating QR codes in your solutions! Not everybody uses those technologies or should be expected to be familiar with them. To me puzzles are something inherently tactile, physical. One of the best puzzles in the world require nothing else but good grasp of how friction, torsion, gravity etc. work. By requiring solvers to have electricity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc. you are making your puzzles less inclusive and less replayable (resolvable?). Take those technologies out of the equation, and your puzzles are nothing but glorified paper weights. There are puzzles out there that are thousands of years old and can still be solved. Mostly. Sure, some of the materials have deteriorated, but I'd rather not be able to solve a puzzle because the stuff it's made of has reached its half-life than due to a lack of Internet connectivity.
