I gave my Farm Dog a DNA Test (RESULTS REVEALED)

After people accused my maremma sheepdog of being part wolf, I felt like it was finally time to get a Dog DNA test to find out the truth. Find out the results of our Embark Dog DNA test.

Hey! Just a little tip for helping get Toby, or perhaps future floofs, better with medical stuff. Something we implement here is "check x". So it comes as a command of sorts. So, in this case for Toby, I would say "Check Teeth". This let's them know that I am in there and going to be messing around.I'll lift lips to look at gums, put my hand in their mouth etc. We do this in other ways to "Check Paw" "Check Ears" "Check Eyes" "Check Back"(for those nether bits haha) We implement it as part of the routine so they get used to it happening. This helps with dogs AND cats. Everytime you say it, you just get in there and manipulate whatever appendage, like lifting the tail or rubbing in between toes. We find it reduces stress

This video makes me so happy somehow. I'm Italian and grew up near Rome where Maremma dogs are still used by people with livestock for protection. When I was a kid we used to see lots of them working with sheep flocks. With my friends we soon learned to never get too closed to them if a shepherd was not around as they can get quite aggressive. Now that I live in Melbourne I've heard about quite a few farmers using maremma dogs to protect their chickens, and of course to protect the little penguins on Middle Island here in Victoria. What a beautiful breed.

I’m really glad you highlighted this breeds strengths and advised people in the suburbs in city against getting this dog. I was working in a suburban neighborhood and noticed a neighbor had two of these dogs in their backyard. The owner was yelling at the dogs because they were barking and doing what they were bred to do, protect. People need to understand that certain breeds are bred for different reasons, and these guys really need to have a job if you get one! It made me really sad to see these two beautiful dogs confined to their small backyard when what they really need is to be on a Homestead or farm with lots of room and a job to do 💕

Exactly! We have an Australian Cattle dog (red healer) he is bread to work too. We live in town with a reason size back yard, he needs long walks daily and lots of play time, which he gets most days or he becomes restless and barks a lot. Fortunately he is a happy well trained dog, it wouldn’t work if he was just left without love and attention. I feel so sorry for dogs like Toby and our Rusty that are kept inside a house. @@akhilldhilipkumarkalaiyara1601 highly depends on the size of the gene pool you start with and how close you consider to be too close. If we go far enough back, every human is related to each other, does that mean it is automatically inbreeding when someone starts a family? No, because despite theoretical relations, it matters a lot how many generations apart those relations are. Same for dogs. If you have enough dogs of one breed and trace the lines carefully, you can have a purebred without any inbreeding. Any responsible breeder makes sure their purebred is not inbred. Only puppy mills don't. Avoid those at all costs for multiple reasons.

Well, when the results show chicken you'll know why from having dropped in the soil. Just make sure you share your breeders info with other farmers to help keep the breed going. This helps the farms and the breeders. The breeders can keep in contact with each other to spread DNA to prevent genetic problems with the breed.

Having a dog with 0 chance of known genetic diseases just goes to show that you got him from a responsible breeder that actually put time and effort into breeding her dogs. And didn't just randomly put male and female dogs together in order to earn a few bucks. Any time someone buys a dog from a breeder they should ask for copies of the parents genetic tests. If the breeder does not have that information, run away as fast as you can as thats a pretty clear sign of a puppy mill breeder. Which significantly lowers your chance of getting a 110% good dog like Toby. A responsible dog breeder breeds for health, temperament and working ability. Toby is a testament to his breeder.

@@christygatto Honestly, I think rescue dogs are great. IF you're prepared for it. I will say that I've had pets from breeders, and I've had pets from shelters/rescues. The rescues always seam to get sicker sooner. That's not to say shelters are bad. But not everyone is ready for those hidden issues. That's why I hate people screaming "Adopt don't shop!" Regarding anything breeder. There's also the idea of working dogs, which need specific training from puppyhood. You can't always find the dog you need for the job you want done at a shelter. I will say some breeds are by no means healthy. And some people shouldn't have certain kinds of dogs. I have horror stories of my inlaws getting a working breed thinking it was a lap dog. So it's a balance.

All of this is absolutely true. A responsible breeder emphasizes health above all else. What good is a beautiful dog if it's a mess of genetic defects? Additionally, the "hybrid vigor" myth needs to just die. A popular selling point with backyard breeders is that crossing eliminates defects and disorders, that the resulting offspring will be stronger than the parents. It's verifiably horse sh!t. When breeding for purebred animals, you KNOW what could be a problem, you know which bloodlines might have certain disorders, you know what to avoid when breeding to minimize the defects. Crossbreeding? Literally a gamble and you DON'T know what they might have, you don't know what disorders they might be carriers of but not symptomatic of. Hell, crossing two breeds sometimes even complicates disorders/anatomical difficulties. Example: Pug X poodle. Pugs have loads of wrinkles on their face and are prone to skin infections/ear infections/eye infections due to the build-up of crud in the wrinkles and their tiny, floppy ear trapping moisture and crud. Now add the curly hair of a poodle. Congratulations, you now have a walking, stinking, four-legged, chronic skin/ear infection that can't breathe properly.

A wolfdog is a hybrid, it is not a mix of breeds, it is a mix of species. Or would you call a mule a breed of horse? The wolfdog might some day earn the rare status of hybrid-breed like savanna cats try, if and only if they are bred to each other for at least 5 (dog) generations without adding new wolves (or dog breeds that aren't wolfdogs) into the mix. But it will always be a hybrid.

Thank you for the clear statement about what lifestyle dogs like Toby need. Too many adorable fluffer pups grow up and end up in shelters because they were too much to handle. One of my pyr mix rescues was a Christmas puppy surprise 3 years ago. A family with 3 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment - in six months she was at a kill shelter. Gemma now enjoys guarding me on 150 acres, but has such a high pretty drive she can't ever be an LGD. Tempted to get a DNA test to see if the other half is not golden retriever as the shelter thought, but chow chow. A pyr-chow isn't common, but imagine a bright red Toby dog! They'd be besties until Gemma tried to eat all of Toby's livestock.

If he were to go inside the igloo shelter you made, he might feel like he wasn't able to do his job. As you consider building a smaller barn-like structure for him, the puppy, and barncats, perhaps consider making it so he can see all around. Maybe a deck raised off the ground for toby with a barn above (like a covered viewing platform)? Could even put heat lamps under there? Just spitballin, hope all is well!
