That's amazing! I babysat identical twins for years and none of the other babysitters that their family tried could tell them apart. For me, it was just a way to get to know them better. I don't know if I could explain the physical differences, but I noticed one's face seemed boxier to me, and the other one was quieter but quicker to get excited about things. I learned a lot from working with them and they even invited me to be with their family at their graduation. I'm really glad they asked me. I hope your twins find lots of people who appreciate their similarities and differences.

Another interesting "unit of measurement of length" based idiom is "the whole nine yards," which related to the length of ammunition belts for .50 caliber machine guns mounted in bombers/gunships. If you were in a serious battle, and used up an entire belt of ammunition, you might say of the enemy thag you "gave them the whole nine yards" of ammunition. I heard a story somewhere (don't remember where) about Jimmy Stewart reacting badly to that phrase after fighting in WW2. I'll see if I can find it sometime soon.

The more time you spend around twins the more immediately obvious it becomes who is who. I grew up knowing two sets of identical twins at school, and while they looked alike at first, as a kid you learned real fast who was who and wound up feeling the difference was huge. But then again kids are sponges for knowledge, older non-faceblind people will have a lot harder time time learning than kids of the same.

We are the same age, we used to play soccer together, and played the same positions. We were so similar that one of us would be on the field and the other on the bench and our parents would cheer for the wrong person! I remember my mom specifically cheering for me only for me to be standing on the side line 10 feet away. She literally told me she would know it was me or not based on the hair ties we wore! Imaging your mom not being to tell you apart! Now that we've both grown up we've of course grown into our facial features, so we don't look SO similar anymore, but the likeness is still there!

One day I wasn't wearing my identification lanyard (which, if you have 6 offenses of this you get sent home early) and a college-student-chaperone was going to ask Raul, my doppleganger, something, so she got my attention, thought I was Raul and almost got him in trouble because she thought I was Raul. Really interesting about the face identification. My son and I are both autistic and suffer from pretty bad face blindness. He has aphantasia so he doesn't really have mental images anyway. He recognizes me most of the time but in a crowd he'd struggle to pick me out. He really struggles to recognize his sister outside of the normal environment, so like if she surprised him and picked him up at school (he's 17) he wouldn't see her until she spoke to him. It's pretty debilitating for him socially.

I know I don't have face blindness, but when I encounter someone I know in an unfamiliar context (like seeing a former coworker at a grocery store), I don't always "see" them unless they speak to me. If they're wearing a mask it's worse. I've had entire conversations with people at the grocery store whom I know I know (often more by the familiarity of their voice), but I can't place them right away because they're masked and I haven't seem them in a few years.

I see less of the physical similarities but WAY more of the behaviorisms and the way that you interact with each other matching. I wonder if this is my brain being able to compare both of you side by side and focus on specific differences so I can tell you two apart (to better assess the specific things you pointed out in your animation) AND something the maybe both of you experienced when going into this meeting with an expectation of meeting your doppelganger and wanting to match with the other. I recognize both Greg and Scott as members of a "type" I've seen before and will likely see again. I never thought of them as doppelgangers, just as members of the same type. As for myself, I was in high school one teacher couldn't tell the difference between me and another kid. I didn't see the resemblance. In college, many of my friends told me I had a doppelganger that they frequently saw around campus. I don't know if somehow my paths never crossed with his (it was a small campus), or if I saw him but didn't recognize him my doppelganger. Over the past few years, I've frequently been mistaken for someone else by the staff at one of my favorite local restaurants and by the staff at the salon where I get my hair cut (which are almost across the street from each other). Based on what they've said, they all seem to be mistaking me for the same guy; all I know about him is that he has a young daughter (whereas I have no children). I suspect that if I ever find out who the guy is, I wouldn't think that he looked much like me and might even be offended that someone would mistake me for him. With regards to, uh, "celebrities", I have trouble telling the difference between Damien Lucas and Matthew Keading, or between Brian Hawks and Kurt Marshall. I know there's at least one other pair of celebrities I get mixed up, but at the moment I can't remember who they are.

  • @jasonreed7522

I think mix ups make the most sense for people who only occasionally have interactions (like the employees of a hair salon you vist once every couple of months) or for teachers who will learn 1 class and then 2 years later the younger sibling comes along and looks close enough and has the same last name so slip ups happen because the brain recalls the wrong first name. (Although once a teacher thought i was some else's younger brother at the start of a year, i kinda get it but it was weird. Normally you get mistaken for your older sibling once or twice and brush it off because your teaches has been learn the faces of 100 new kids for the past 20 years.) I have never been confused for some else in the general public though, but i do share the name if someone else in my hometown. Never met him, but i went to school with his daughter, and as far as we know we have no blood relation.
