    My grandmother died after she gave birth to my uncle in the 50s. They had her covered in a blanket and told my grandfather that she passed but the baby survived. Someone noticed the blanket on her twitched. They covered her in hot pads, and brought her back to life. She had scars on her shins from the heating pads, and had some rare disease caused by the birth/death. She lived into her mid 80s. Sometimes even doctors get it wrong. Thankfully they do more tests before declaring you dead now.

    The genetic polymorphism answers something I've wondered for years! This random guy at my gym would always be wearing shorts no matter the weather, and one time during winter I asked him how he could handle the cold. He told me he decided one day to just, not be cold anymore.

  • @JesseSwaney

    @JesseSwaney

    I only wear shorts as well. People mention it every day. I just don't like the way pants feel, and I just don't feel cold. Occasionally, I feel cold, but it really has to be gnarly out. Most of the time, it's the wind mixed with the freezing temperatures. But I wear shorts in 0°F. My mother would especially bicker about it. Of course, she just wants to make sure her son is safe. I just have to remind her that I know my body better than anyone else. If I get cold, I will make sure I warm myself up. I wear sweaters and/or jackets. I just rock the shorts at the same time.

    I worked for a heart defibrillator company for a while, and they had another product line where they were making the equipment for doctors to put a person into induced hypothermia and then bring them back out. This was part of their research into cardiac arrest, that basically when a patient was being resuscitated, the temporary loss of oxygen wasn't really what was damaging them, but the sudden reintroduction of oxygen did. So if you could cool them down, then resuscitate them and then warm them back up, they had much better outcomes. Edit: Technically resuscitation from cardio fibrillation (mostly dead), since cardiac arrest is completely dead, as described in the Princess Bride.

    Why does it feel like science is just looping back and proving the things we instinctively understood as basic tens of thousands of years ago, but now presenting it like a revolutionary discovery 🤔

  • @firelord7776

    @firelord7776

    Жыл бұрын

    Well the thing is many things that where thought to be facts thousands of yesrs ago where clearly wrong and science also proved that. So science as a whole checks old methods to see if they are true or not, which in my opinion is a great thing. Because without science we would still also practice on the nonesense theories. Also scientists have discovered many thing that humans even 200 years ago couldnt have dreamed of.

    @@DJ3thenew23 well no. Most of the things science proves where not facts before they where proven, they where merely assumtions. Thats the thing with science. It is the only way to turn an assumtion into a fact. For example, it was not a fact, that cold temperatures could help your body. Some people assumed it and some assumed, that it hurts you more than it helps. But now it is fact, that it has some positive effects. It is still not fact if those outweigh the negative or if they are even substancial.

    That is weird. I grew up on a farm in Minnesota, and would sometimes have to put my hand into freezing water and never thought twice about it. Then I saw something on TV about hypothermia tests, and the reporter had to put her hand into a bucket of ice water. She acted like she was in pain, and I just thought that was weird and frankly unbelievable. But I have since met people who couldn't handle a bit of cold water.

    ... and here I like to sleep beside an open window, when it's -10C (and I wear just boxers, have a top sheet over me, with no comforter. I also often have a fan blowing on me, at the same time.)

    I like the cyberpunk liner in the jackets! Looks neat! Lol I've heard of some kid that fell through the ice in a lake nearby, rescuers got him out over an hour later and he was completely fine... after a long recovery process anyway lol

    This makes me happy because being cold is the only time I'm happy. I'm a grouchy curmudgeon when it's over 70 degrees and I'm a lifelong Texan. Needless to say, I mostly hate life except for 2 weeks a year. Cold is healthier.

    @@nathenwithane my AC tech said the exact same thing yesterday. My power went out during the freeze we had, and during the recent heat wave. It's way easier to warm up and sleep if it's freezing. Being hot, my cats couldn't even handle it.

    I can't handle the cold at all, up to a point where I need a heating pad whenever sitting or laying down in the winter (in heated buildings!), and I'm also a terrible sprinter. I think I just lost at genetics lol

    I kinda wish this video mentioned cold urticaria. For people with it, direct exposure to the cold causes welts/swelling on the body, and even anaphylaxis in severe cases. I hope future medical professionals are careful before clearing someone for cold therapy and other cold treatment. I have the condition, and watching this video just made my skin itchy 😅

    0:00: 🥶 Freezing to death and being successfully thawed out has become increasingly common with modern science, leading to a new field of cutting-edge medicine. 2:54: ⛄ Freezing to death can cause severe cellular damage and even death, but cold therapy can trigger genes and hormones that may extend life. 6:56: ⛄ Hypothermia can sometimes protect the body from lethal damage and allow for successful resuscitation. 8:41: ❄ Scientists are exploring the use of cold temperatures to revive the body and improve muscle response in extreme situations.
