He definitely enjoys jumping you can tell that a mile out. What a super horse x

The principle of the exercise is accuracy. The jump is by the by. The reason for stopping after the jump, trotting in and out dead straight is to get accuracy. You need this before you even put a jump into the exercise. Don’t start jumping, let alone making it higher and skinnier until you nail the flat work on approach and landing. It is tedious and boring but pays dividends. Try not to get over excited with changing the difficulty level, keep practising, even if stage 1 takes you weeks. ‘Dead Straight’ is one of the hardest things that horse and rider are asked to do.

It’s an interesting note, thank you. My instructor often says “showjumping is just flatwork with jumps in the way” 🤣 I wonder if we can find a nice flatwork masterclass on straightness and accuracy to build on your note here. Becky Woolven has a brilliant masterclass on H&C using the different coloured bands on poles to encourage accuracy and straightness - you choose a different colour to trot over each time. I rather enjoyed trying that one out!

You can do accuracy exercises with anything. A pair of buckets, a jacket on the side of the school, anything. The obstacle is not important, how you ride in between each one is the trick. Your instructors comments do ring true. You will tell if you are going to mess up a jump 6 strides out, if it’s all perfectly in place at that point, all you have to do is keep it and the horse has to pick their feet up. It’s really easy to say and really difficult to do!

This is such an interesting type of series to watch. I don’t have a horse or take lessons (it’s on my bucket list, though even if I am an older beginner), but I loved seeing how you adapted the exercises to you and Ted. Thanks for sharing your expertise as well, Gemma!

Great exercise! I'm definitely going to try this with my mare! I did a similar one years ago with my old boy, but instead of taking blocks away to make a skinny, we had barrels on a wall type block, which we gradually moved in so we had to jump through the barrels! It was so much fun and we got so the barrels were almost touching our stirrups as we jumped! :D

Love this idea! Great job and fun to watch! I may have to join Horse & Country TV again and actually try the exercises instead of just watching them. lol My interest is show jumping so any of those would be great, and I also love watching Ros Canter.

The Laura Tomlinson one on straightness and centre lines is great! I tried some of the exercises with Peds, including going from shoulder in, to straight to traver. I’d have never tried traver (quarters in) as thought that was for a much higher level than us, but he managed it great!

I absolutely love this idea and the way you executed it! I loved that you broke down each exercise into how we as riders can apply them when we most certainly do not have olympic horses!
