    You will be buying things constantly. Until a point. And then you will be just replacing stuff. Now I can go into a tack store and leave with just leather cleaner and fly spray. I'd also be careful buying sized items. I know plenty of 16.2 horses that fit in cob bridles.

    Haha i will definitely need some restraint in the early days. And ooh that's helpful thank you - i'm actually not buying anything else that the horse wears until i meet them - i just couldn't resist the travel boots because the price was such a steal.

    Exciting!! I know it seems hard but holding on and making sure your new horse ticks all the boxes as it is really worth it. Also don't worry if you need to take a break for your mental health you aren't alone and I have had to take several breaks with various things over the years. Finally I have a pie bald and she is mostly in purple 💜

    My riding colour scheme is red white and blue, my share pony wears red so we are good! 🤩 For my own horse down the line I would look to get black, navy, red/burgundy, pale blue, hi viz (pink 🦄) and white for competitions. My grooming kit is one I have had since I was in year 3 and it is bright pink 😂 I would probably go for pink yard tools too...

    So excited for you and really interesting to see your list! I’m not convinced by the liner system yet but I’d be really interested to see how it works in practice. It definitely makes a huge difference to your list that you’re going on full livery so you don’t have to worry about the wheelbarrow and broom issues I’ve been having 😆 I would definitely agree with ‘buy cheap buy twice’, but my favourite steal has been Decathlon. They’ve got a huge range and although it’s not top top quality it’s always surprisingly good. Their hiking base layers are great and the waterproof fleece lined breeches and riding boots are to die for, I have lived in nothing else since I got them!

    I'm actually really impressed with how restrained you are 😄. Congratulations! I do imagine you'll keep buying bit by bit after the initial list is complete. You of course know what you prefer, but I quickly changed from an all purpose saddle to twodressage and jumping saddles (I was eventing)- the all purpose was great to have while I searched for a good deal on the others. Just a thought for a next savings goal! Just wondering if you ever did a video on the things you bought while you were loaning? I am currently loaning and the owner has everything I need and I can use it, but I still love browsing and did add a couple of saddle blankets to the pile he already has 😋

    A summer/stable sheet is a good addition it keeps them clean when it’s to warm for a stable rug. And they are good for putting under rugs especially if your swapping them as they don’t have a cold rug put on them and they can have a warm rug on their backside while you are grooming and tackling up. And I think you will struggle with just one turnout rug.

  • @RidingWithRhi

    I think just a cheap one would do as a spare. I couldn’t find any decent 50g rugs that I like in the size I wanted, so just got a cheap crappy one for just under £40 off eBay to tide me over until I can find one. And it’s lasted a few months and will hopefully last until I can find a decent one in the size I want. I was looking at swish as they are highly recommended but none are in stock yet.

    Nearly 3 years ago I have bought my horse and I still constantly paying for stuff or needing to replace stuff. When I first got my horse I had nothing because I wasn’t expecting to find a horse so quickly I only a head collar and grooming kit from a previous part loan . My horse came with her tack , I was very lucky that I bought my horse in the summer so I didn’t worry about rugs. I would be careful buying to many stuff especially when They needs certain size because I was looking for 14.2 -15.2 cob gelding I ended up buying 16.2 Irish sport horse mare .

    Sorry if my English isn't great, I am French. I'd say you're actually missing a lot of things - more than a girth. About the rugs, I won't say anything : my pony lives outside and only wears outdoor rugs. I know that horses in France usually wear the same rug in or out : all waterprooves ones, and they keep them at night so they remain totally dry the day after. Well that works if the rugs isn't too muddy like mine can be at this point of the year, ahaha ! Anyway, you only talk about one pair of boots, one head collar... Believe me : you will need at least two of each ! Tendon boots can be wet for DAYS after being used for a hack, or in a wet arena. And head collars... They break so easily, it's always better to have a spare one, just in case. Same for saddle pads / numnah, dunno how you call them and which one is what ahah. No need to be like me and have thousands of them, but I would say at least three. One being used, the other one in the washing machine and a last one... For lazy days when both are dirty. And same as boots : in summer, they easily get wet... And putting wet saddle pad on horses would be like wearing yesterday's pair of socks, nah ? Then, I would say emergency products : a little pharmacy with desinfectant, what I call a "magic cream" for litlle injuries, wraps and badages... and other stuffs you always need when you don't have them. Hope this helps ;-)

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    Yes quite right ! I plan on getting multiple numnahs and I do have a spare headcollar (it’s leather so I use it for travel mostly) but you’re right about first aid - I have a few helpful bits but I should get a full kit. I hadn’t considered multiple sets of boots but I can see where you are coming from!

    Nice to see your list, and thoughts, etc. I'm just about to buy a horse I've had on full loan for a few of months - jet black quarter horse mare... I'm not into personal clothing branding and the choice for guys is not great anyway, also, I ride western style, so jeans, (Dublin) boots and a nice warm jacket/gilet work for me... (Padded cycling shorts/leggings under the jeans for a bit of comfort & warmth!) She came with a couple of rugs but nothing else, so I had to buy her a bridle and saddle but used a local company for the saddle (Treefree, Dartmoor) and got their (green!) fitted numnah to go with it. Her headstall is chocolate brown with white and turquoise beading. I have a box like yours for grooming kit, etc. too and it's sturdy enough to stand on, if I never need to. Might need to think about a cooling/drying rug as she came back a little warm after todays ride (2 hours, walk, trot, canter although that ought to improve with fitness) Good luck with the new horse search - I'm sure the right one will turn up soon.

    Some real talk here from an eventer (as I feel we are know to buy a bit less stuff!!) - I own a 16.2 mare, she lives out 24/7 in the summer and goes out 3/4 days a week in the winter. In terms of rugs, I have found that less is more. I only own 1 stable rug which is literally only used when at 3 day events/stay away shows as I just don't use it at home!! Every yard I have been on (full livery) has never changed rugs from stable to turnout, the horses just live in their turnouts and are very happy - at the end of the day they don't care what they are wearing as long as they are warm!! Literally the only rugs I use are a medium weight turnout, a 0g liner, a houseware allrounder (the PERFECT rug - buy one 100% they are the ideal summer rug) and a light weight turnout. I also have 2 thermatex (one manky one for general yard/day to day bathing etc and one fancy one for events.) but I have found that this is literally all I need, and my fully clipped mare (who is notoriously hard to keep weight on) is very warm in just a medium weight and thin liner. I also think that if you only have 1 outer, it will very likely stop being waterproof/get trashed a lot quicker, so you might be better off having a lightweight 0g fill and a medium weight 200g fill. In England I don't really think you would ever need to go above 200/250g (medium with a thin liner), it just doesn't get cold enough even when they are fully clipped, and if it was to get very cold, you can just stick a fleece on underneath until the cold spell blows over. That is just my opinion though and I have been surrounded by people who don't believe in having too much gear (and I have very limited funds!!). Especially when you are on full livery I find that grooms appreciate having a simple rug system as it saves them so much time when bring in/turning out etc.

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    Love this! It's so funny you say that about liner systems because i actually consulted the grooms on my full livery yard if they prefer seperate rugs or liners because i didn't want to be a pain and they actually said liners! They do change the rugs overnight where we are, unless they really really need to dry out and even then, they usually just hang them up. But i defo hear you on having as little as possible and not overcomplicating! X

    Congrats on getting a horse! First thing first, don't buy anything for the horse until you've got the horse! I got my lad (in my avatar) 12 years ago, I wasn't looking for a chestnut gelding, I was just looking for a horse big enough for me (I'm 6'2"/188 cm) so I needed a tall sturdy horse that could carry me. I didn't care about it being a mare, or a gelding (prob wouldn't get a stallion), what colour it was or anything else, just had to be at least 16hh and up to carrying some weight, and had to be at least 5 y/o ... I ended up with a 6 y/o, 16.2hh, chestnut, ISH, gelding! ☺ I bought him without tack or rugs, and started looking online - there is soooo much more choice than when I was a teenager and bought my first pony!! Shop around, don't just buy something because it's a brand name. My bridle was a generic bridle and so was my saddle, and all my rugs, saddle pads etc are the same. I chose blue as my colour scheme, and I have everything from turquoise to navy, plus some grey, and all my tack is black (much easier to match tack if everything's black!). best of luck to you!

    some things you can/should be flexible abt like the sex of the horse/pony but in the end if the horse checks off all your boxes you should be a little flexible abt the sex of the horse!

  • @RidingWithRhi

    It's definitely a personal choice. I had a LONG chat with my coach about geldings vs. Mares because I found myself veering towards mares who looked liked they ticked all of my boxes too. She reminded me that they are very different: a gelding is a gelding but a mare has all of their reproductive parts and is therefore "entire" in a way a stallion is. That means you will have them in season in the summer (which is when I wanted to do a lot of my competing) and you won't get that daily consistency of behaviour you get with geldings. Don't get me wrong, I know mares can be amazing, especially when you get them on side, but for for me "sex" was actually something I really didn't want to compromise on and I would instead rather compromise on age or breed.

    look into getting 1200 dernier rugs. rambo call them 12d i think? basically, a 'normal' waterproof rug is 600 derneir which is how waterproof it is. what im trying to say is 1200 dernier stay waterproof for longer. they are a bit more expensive but so worth it! i have a 400g 1200 dernier turnout rug that has been used for 3 winters and is still waterproof and it hasnt been re proofed. it saves money in the long run because it can go long without being washed. Especially if your using the 0g rug with liners in all year round, you'd want a really waterproof rug! i have a 200g 600 dernier rug which i used autumn time and by the time it was cold enough to put the heavy weight on, it had started leaking! hope this helps x

    Ooh this is a fantastic point and tip! Makes a lot of sense too. I’ll look into this, thank you. The Rambo is 1000 denier but you’re quite right that if the top one stops being waterproof the whole system is broken.

    Flymask- rambo, such good quality and off their face so their eyes dont weap 💕 sometimes horses benefit from supplements, id say leave them a month when you first get them to see what upu think they actually need, but i have a 4yo so shes currently on biotin for her feet growth (barefoot) and a digestive supplement just to protect her gut. But once these run out ill look on Zafina/Natura horse for herbal supplements (cheap!) xx

    Hi Rhi, re watching this video as I'm considering buying my first horse. Question: what else is there to consider when buying your first horse in terms of the feeling you get when you ride them to see if their "the one"? As the first ride may not be great as you don't know each other but then down the line you get to know each other and things could be great.

  • @RidingWithRhi

    It's a hard one really as I can only go off my own experience. I think you need to feel safe and comfortable from your first ride, but a lot of other stuff you might be looking for potential - E.g attitude to work? how brave are they? How quick do they pick up on things? Try to separate what you can teach vs. What must be in place for you personally

    It really depends how much interest the horse has. These days, it's not really an option to walk away and come back because the horses move so fast, so its really a case of going to them and if you like them, putting down a deposit. That's not to say you couldn't view others whilst you wait for the vetting, but if the original horse passes the vet and you prefer another, you'll lose the deposit and the vetting cost (a few hundred £ each) so it's not really worth it.

    @@giddyup3666 Unless I've not understood my vet correctly, flexion tests are not actually mandatory. I personally think that they are useful, especially when it comes to insurance. However, there are instances in which: "Flexion tests of all four limbs and trotting in a circle on a firm surface may also be carried out, but these aren’t mandatory parts of the standard procedure and there may be circumstances when the examining vet concludes that it’s unsafe, inappropriate, unsuitable or impossible to perform them."

I just replied to someone else that I have vet wrap and gamgee on hand for emergencies as well as wet wipes, sudocream, equiderma and rubber gloves (they are all in the grooming kit box) but I absolutely agree about a first aid kit. A great thing about full livery is that the team always has equipment on hand, but I do agree it’s great to have your own.

    Ted returned to his owners at the start of the year (as I shared on my Instagram). Of course! It was the end of an era and an emotional time as you'd expect, but I also know that he's always going to be happy, healthy and very much loved and cared for by his owners and that makes me happy. It is only natural that he would no longer feature on the channel.
