    I'm on the Cheshire/Staffordshire border. I budget around 275 a month per horse (I have 2) the one thing that surprised me is the feed costs. I am so lucky both mine are cob types so dont require much feed - I buy about 40 pounds worth of feed/supplements per month which covers both horses 😂 also hay I spend about 60 a month on in winter but so so much less in summer as they only come in a few hours a day Great video and thanks for sharing your excel sheet so helpful! Xx

    Ah yes! This is one video I hope my parents never watch. Though, being 26 I think they’ve almost given up on the “please don’t buy a horse” conversation so perhaps one day I shall. Thanks for watching + for such high praise! I think it’s so important to understand what an undertaking a horse is. I have a similar video coming up showing just how much time they take up because I think it’s important to know before you take one on.

    Brilliant video, and summary of the cost of keeping a horse at livery. My last horse I owned and kept at livery was back in 2007, and cost £125 per month DIY. The cost has risen a lot since then, but before that time in livery I was lucky enough to find a field to rent, and converted my garage into a stable which actually worked really well. But when my old beloved horse was sadly put to sleep at the age of 35, I bought another horse, but he was quite lively and churned the ground in no time. So that's why I had him in livery. I didn't like the livery yard for many reasons including the fact they had the turn out paddocks fenced with electric fences, and it was mains, and it was some way to get to the main switch in an emergency. I was used to using a battery electric fencer and it was much safer. I still miss not having a horse, but it is too expensive nowadays, and the price of livery is much like having a mortgage, and I think is out of the financial reach for most people. But it was good if a little frightening to see how much it costs to keep a horse these days.

    Just discovered your channel. It's great....i am just in the planning stage at the moment...one question I have is how do you time getting a new horse with finding a livery yard? If you find a yard you like it may be weeks before you find your horse and then they may then not have any space...but you can't get a horse without having already arranged livery🤔

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    Great question! I had my loan horse briefly at the yard before and the owner was my coach, so I was able to "keep" my place whilst my coach helped me look for a horse. Best thing is to keep an eye on your favourite yard, tell them your plans and have a couple of back ups, knowing you may have to go to one of them first and wait before you can move to your ideal yard.

    Woah, I'm impressed you found assisted DIY for $150 base cost! Do you mind giving some info on how you went about finding yards for this? It seems so many yards don't have websites and it's a bit word of mouth based. What I've been finding in south London is all around £200 plus or more base for DIY livery. Are there certain areas around London that are more or less expensive (I'm talking about the fringes I mean - of course central London will be sky high haha)? For example is north generally more expensive or cheaper than south? I'm likely moving to London in the next year or two and trying to figure out if it's crazy to think a horse could be an option

    Wow even the full livery in London is still cheaper than the US. Horses are so incredibly expensive in the US. For a regular nice barn it would be about $900 for board/livery and that includes hay, shavings, and hard feed. But then you have to pay extra for lessons which would be about 50-80 dollars per lesson. Shows are very expensive. For a weekend show in another state it would be about $2,000. Then vets and farriers are a lot more expensive then in the UK

    If you're trying to choose between the two, go for the motorbike. Horses are so expensive and time consuming. Motorbikes are for the most part an upfront cost and they don't care if you go on holiday or don't ride them for months. Take it from someone who has both!

  • @what2636

    This is a bit late, but I made a power-point (i know, a bit over the top, but my parents are non-horsey and take quite a lot to convince them). I included the rough cost of a part loan, and the pros and cons to part loaning. I'd also say be prepared to hear them say no and try to be an adult about it (not scream or cry or beg) because they'll be more willing to talk about it later with you if you didn't get angry when they said no the first time. If they say yes, talk to them about it and make it clear what you want from the beginning so they don't get surprised and back out. They might just think you are too young or haven't been riding long enough, if they think that maybe try and help out more at your local stable to show them that you are responsible enough and show them that you are willing to put in the work. Hope that helped a little :)

    London is quite cheap compared to Oslo. Here a full livery would set you back 650-750 pounds a month. That is at an equestrian centre, nowhere else is it common to have full livery deals. Livery yards usually have turnout in the morning and morning and lunch feeding included. At a place without an indoor you can find this from 450 pounds a month. DIY doesn't really exist. And your farriers are quite cheap as well. Never paid less than 120 pounds for a set of four shoes, more for winter shoes with studs and snow soles.

    Wonder how anyone affords it and still makes sensible savings contributions to their pensions etc. Or do they just sacrifice that? I've been waiting to get my own horse for fifteen years. I now have a professional wage and still worry about the numbers, no idea how people are doing this from part time and unskilled salaries.

    I'm tad late... But if you budget well it is very affordable!! I don't have my own horse yet but I work on a livery yard with 80 horses and they've taught me alot. The biggest thing to make a horse affordable? Get a native breed like a cob or haflinger or something similar! They're such good doers and we have two cobs and a haflinger at our yard. The chaff for the haflinger has lasted the owner 3 months and the pony nuts 6 months. While the Arabian and bigger ones feed just take a massive toll on the owners monthly cost. If you want to budget or reduce cost (without compromising welfare) these are my recommendations... 1. DIY Livery - it's the cheapest service at a yard 2. Learn how to do first aid yourself! This has saved many of us loads of munz since we know what to do. Of course, please call a vet if it is really concerning or requires a vet. 3. Join Facebook horse groups 4. Save, save, save!! Save away a certain amount each month so if an emergency does happen, you've got something to cover vet bills 5. Split the vet call with somebody such as when vaccines are due you both pay the vet There is alot more but those are my main ones!
