What chores do you do you when you part loan a horse? How does sharing a horse work? I get asked these questions a lot so I've put together a full week of part loaning a horse so you can see what I do on my horse sharing days and what I get up to on my 'days' off. Here is a full week with my horse.

    So nice to see how a share works around a full time job. Usually horsey videos show all the time and money in the world to have horses. I’m a full time worker in London and struggle with fitting horses around my schedule. Nice to see a realistic lifestyle similar to mine.

    I’m so nervous to start with my first loan. A friend of mine said to me that in someone’s eyes you will always be doing something wrong, so just do what the horses owner tells you, then you aren’t doing it wrong for the people who it actually matters to. Everyone does things a little differently and that’s okay.

    I think if you have a good relationship with your owners you won’t have to worry about them looking for stuff that’s wrong. It’s about establishing open communication and honesty - making sure both parties can always say whatever. That way, if you do something the owner isn’t a fan of, they can tell you straight away and it doesn’t build up into this huge thing. Likewise, you as a sharer feel comfortable asking questions etc so you’re not second guessing what they like. That’s how it works for us ☺️

    I have started watching your vlogs today, I really enjoyed them. My mare is 16hh and 15 years old warmblood who can be a very moody mare but I love her so much. I have had her since October last year and she is my first horse in 40 years. I'm a Mum and grandma and finally have time to get back to my lifetime passion. Its had a few challenges to say the least but with help and support I'm making lots of progress. I'm not thinking of competing just having fun, hacking and popping the occasional jump in the school. Your vlogs are very helpful and informative. Thank you 😊

    I am so excited to watch this! Obviously because your one of my fav KZreadrs but partially because I've finally found a horse to part loan! She's the most stubborn mare I've ever met, but she works hard for the right person. Since you've got a spicy Ted, do you have any tips on what to do when the horse is being spicy/stubborn?

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s exciting! Congrats. Well, short term/when it’s happening: try to be patient, empathetic but firm. And long term: get to know her as well as you can and try to figure out what triggers cause the spice/stubbornness so you can prepare for it, de-escalate it and eventually avoid it altogether if you can!

  • @JustHorseyMie

    You're so lucky to have tack shops which buy and sell used tack. I wish we had them, I've been trying to sell a few breeches and a show jacket for a year, no luck. Having a horse with separation anxiety is the worst thing. I had one on part loan that spun around and got diarrhea after 1 minute, not interested in food at all, just anxiety attack... He was fine outside alone, on hacks etc...

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Aww bless them :( it’s not easy and we must remember that “separation anxiety” is sort of a man made problem: horses are in-built to stay together for safety so it takes a lot of trust for them to go against all of their instincts for us. All we can do is try to make them feel safe and take it step by step.

    Hi Rhi! Really love your channel. Quick question: how did you go about teaching Ted to stay alone in the yard? My horse has no problem going on a hack alone...no problem at all! But being left alone in the barn or in the field...that is a no-no for him! Was it as simple as leaving him alone for a couple of minutes at a time - reuniting him with others before he gets nervous - then prolonging the alone time bit by bit every session? Thank you!

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes exactly - it’s also routine. When I started sharing him in the winter, he knew that it went: feed, stand on yard with Haynet whilst I muck out, ride, out in field. Same every day. I also try to combine it with pleasant things such as grooming and.. this one sounds a bit crazy but when I leave him alone sometimes I leave one of my podcasts on so he has human voices. Little by little. You want to be careful not to push him too far too because you want the “end” to come when he is calm, not stressed. You don’t want him to learn that stressing = release. Miri Hackett of Hackett Equine youtube does some great groundwork techniques around teaching the horse to find relaxation themselves and that’s been helpful too.

    Part loaners on a DIY yard would usually do both ends of the day? I did as a loaner and when i loaned my horse out the loaner was expected to do the same.

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    I think it depends on the owner and the yard. I always did one end of the day when I started and then offered both ends of day when I was WFH and I've seen similar arrangements on adverts for those looking for sharers.

    i’ve just found your channel and was wondering how much experience you had before you started loaning ted? :) i rode for 3 years at a stables and i got up to the point where i could tack up, and everything, walk,trot, and almost got canter until the horse i rode fell ill so i stopped lessons, someone recommended to me part loaning and if i found a confident horse and possibly got some lessons with my old instructor ? just looking for some advice :)

  • @RidingWithRhi

    @RidingWithRhi

    I have ridden since I was 9 (I’m 27 now) and I’ve worked at several yards as a groom. Whether or not to part loan depends on a couple of things: 1) your riding skill level, 2) your horse care knowledge level and 3) whether you go to a riding school or private owner. With 1) I would probably have a few more lessons until you are jumping (if you plan to jump) and can confidently canter alone in an open space so that you can enjoy the horse to the fullest and also manage any issues you come up against since when you part loan you are by yourself, not with the owner. 2) is the most important - with part loaning the horse will be your responsibility on your days which means you need to be able to perform chores such as groom, tack up, muck out, change rugs etc without assistance as well as to be able to spot lameness/injury. 3) if you choose to go to a private owner, it’s harder than a riding school since you will be on your own and not have many people to ask. At a riding school when you part loan, there’s always someone to ask for help if you get stuck and there’s not so much pressure to be able to spot injury etc since the riding school grooms will likely see it even if you don’t. I hope that helps :)

    Typically, if you are FULL loaning, all existing equipment will be supplied by the original owner. However, it will be up to you to maintain and replace it as and when needed as well as the purchase of any new equipment you may need. It is generally a good idea to put together an inventory with the owner before taking on a full loan so you know what you started with and who owned what.
