Do we really want everyone to have a drive a flying car?! Hell no ! Just look at traffic helicopter shots of freeways. Where will the congestion be? Who will direct traffic. Where does one go if a fc breaks down? Down! How will traffic lanes be established and controlled? Emergency vehicles? Compete fantasy.

@@DiscohitWho is, "we" you're talking about? The only thing prohibiting people from flying conventional aircraft since their inception, has primarily been cost. Over the past 30'ish years, licensing has become an ever-growing barrier as well. "We" won't see any low-altitude traffic jams any time soon, however, most of your other concerns have already been solved by technology and the rest can be as well.

I started with helicopters at 18, but fell in love with auto gyros recreationally at around 27ish. I picked one up for $25K, and it was in great shape; it needed nothing, to take fight. They still give me a thrill in my 40's! When I watched this video, I didn't see a guy falling for a "flying car", I see a guy head over heels for an auto-gyro, and I completely understand. You don't know how many commercial pilots I've met who own and fly auto gyros as well. There's something about (low and slow) flying that's exciting. I prefer "river carving" myself.

Yes, low and slow is the cat's meow. Private pilot here that got to fly the Quicksilver Ultralight back in the 80's. Way funner than regular light aircraft. During a training episode in the Borrego desert east of San Diego I was held totally stationary by rising air off the approach end of the dirt runway. Finally had to dive steeply to get below the powerful lifting forces. Won't ever forget that. YeeHaw!!!

Very interesting video! As a former autopilot engineer, I have followed flying cars for decades. This is a really viable combination that looks promising. I am not a pilot, but have done takeoffs and landings in a Cessna 172, and have flown hundreds of hours in small fixed-wing and rotary aircraft as part of a test crew for developing the autopilot. Flying is an expensive hobby, but offers many unique experiences!

Thanks mate... a great opportunity to see how the progress has developed from the Carver gyro base bike metamorphozing into a trike cum flying car in the near future. I esp. was keen to witness yr reaction 2bh from a perspective that reminisce my personal experience when I was a 6-yr old co-pilot to my Dad in his Chipmunk 2-seat sport plane that we flew on many occasions and flew past from Singapore into the border boundaries of an outlying rural town called Kluang in the Province of Johore in Malaysia, back in the late mid 50s. I lerv flying too as my Dad lets me sink into his rear cockpit, strapped and headed out doing some incredible stunts to show me his skills as well as often visiting his EXpat business friends in the midst of a jungle airstrip where many British & Aussie pilots (military & commercial) hang about for an afternoon break by their makeshift hangars. I was just a toddler then. My Dad had two planes to himself, the other is a 5-seater Cessna where he pilots my mum, me and sibling bro and one of another sis, to fly out & join the party crowd for a BBQ weekend with Expats in a Malaysian jungle. I enjoyed yr test review too on the KIA Sportage Hybrid.... I bought the NQ5 Sportage AWD PHEV. Cheersch & greetz from Holland mate.🍺🍺😎🇳🇱

Five minutes in, this is easily the best flying car video I have watched. So many videos try to use glitz and glamour to "sell you" on why their flying car is the best/first/farthest along. This guy is actually explaining what regulations factor in to getting one of these cars approved by the authorities, which is probably the single biggest barrier to why we haven't seen them mass produced yet. 🚁

Another once in a lifetime money can't buy experience except in this instance money can buy it. It reminded me of the day I got a trip in the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter off the cost of Scotland as a practice casualty that instead of stepping off the aircraft at the end I was roped out at 100 ft to keep the winch-man up to speed for a real life rescue. All during the flight we were on comms and invited into the cockpit for a view out front for part of the flight. That must have been similar to my experience. The views are different class in the air.

@@jjhites9855 They used to not come with horizontal stabilizers and it was very easy to do a power over and lose lift. If you pull up fast on takeoff like a normal plane you can smash the rotor into the tail as well on many models. If you fly these in a conservative manner they're safer than single engine airplanes. Of course, it's really fun to fly these like a maniac so people do that quite a bit. The important thing is to keep the rotor loaded.

I had always thought they looked like they were just hanging out in the sky waiting to fall out, but your flight looked like it was rock solid, plus you have a built in parachute type decent if the engine does crap out. I am new to your channel so I have lots of past episodes to check out and I can't wait to see what you will do next.

Unbelievable. I’d come across the Pal-V a few times but only in passing. As a PPL and car nut, this video was like Christmas and a Birthday. Great job, Ped. 😊 Those engineers are urgently needed at BMW. How they manage to engineer a car with two engines and a 100l fuel tank that can also FLY… but weighs a third as much as BMWs smallest coupe is a lesson they could share with Munich. Perhaps they could also offer some styling advice. So the PAL-V is €499,000. Presumably not including taxes. So well over £500,000. As an aircraft, its performance is respectable enough…250-300 mile range, 80knot cruise. As a car, 100 mph top speed, 0-60 in 9 seconds ish. It looks amazing and what a toy. If you have ALL the other toys, it’s a must-have. But to anyone having to spread a relatively limited amount of money across a few toys, it’s punchy. Very punchy. I hope they do well nonetheless - I can see where the money has gone. It’s just too much for me when for the same money I could have a new Caterham, a new BAC Mono, a lightly used BMW 750i, a used 991.2 Cab and change for a used Schweitzer 300CBi. Which is my current list - I’m halfway through it. Pal-V will just have to wait. 😊

This idea of a flying car has been on the wish list for a long time but you've done a good job of identifying the difficulties, the big hurdle is needing a pilot's license. Getting one of these takes a while and quite a bit of money and that is for a 'private' pilot certificate, if you want to fly on rainy days you are going to need an instrument rating, more time and expense, and lastly since this plane has two engines, you'll need a multiple engine rating, more yet. Insurance for an aircraft is about that for a car but low hours pilots pay much higher rates and the insurer might require you to have an instructor pilot along for a period of hours at the beginning. The aircraft will need to be approved for instrument flight if you intend to fly on those rainy days and that will require an expensive instrument suite to meet the standard. This is a relatively low powered rotary wing aircraft so it won't set any great speed records and on a decent motorway it will probably go further in a given amount of time than by flying, remember too that at each end of the trip you need to deal with the departure/destination to airport trip. The men in blue frown on taking off and landing on a highway.

Great video and great ATV (Air Terra Vehicle) as a private pilot here in the USA as well as being in the composites and metal fabrication business. I have somewhat followed the flying cars as they have always intrigued me, I think its great that technology in aviation construction, power, and electronics have progressed and come together from the point of the 1960's Aero-Car to what the guys at Pal-V have created... it's great that the inventors have stayed together pushed forward through all the trials and tears I'm sure there have been a few for over 10 years to accomplish what they have. I wish them them best and can't wait to maybe get the chance to fly or I mean drive one of these ATV's.. and also see what the future holds! Just curious as well, what type of license is required to operate one a pilot and drivers license?

That may seriously change the way some will travel but it is not for everyone :) It still might a bit of a niche. Imagine, how many 'regular' drivers have a need and desire to fly? Not mentioning having both driving and PPL licences, where the second being much more difficult and costly to acquire. And how many drivers ever check anything around their cars? Some even forget to check if they have any fuel. I guess, this will be most appealing to current pilots, for the next few years?, maybe for commuting or pure fun after work? 😁 A new big boys toys. I want one!

That looks awesome. First flying car? Not by a long shot. First actually practical flying car? This could be it. Like the first prototype in the background, most flying cars either look like cars with wings or a rotor bolted on, or they are unwieldy (and noisy) quadcopter monstrosities that only manage to prove the old R/C modelers' adage that anything will fly if you strap a big enough motor to it. What impresses me about this car is the small footprint, the way the rotor, tail and undercarriage fold in, resulting something that's actually car sized. This can easily go in your garage. And the specs are pretty good for a light aircraft.

When I first saw the PAL-V those years ago, my first thought was " this is now a flying car is going to be built" without wings but with helicopter blades that can act as a spinning gyro in the event of drive failure. You do not need parachutes really. Great to see these coming to market soon.

  • @ulbuilder

Assuming the rotor blades and their controls never fail or malfunction a parachute is not needed. Weight penalty of a parachute is minimal and the cost is not significant. It's like paying for life insurance that saves your life instead of paying cash for your death.

The first fixed wing roadable aircraft to fly was built by Waldo Waterman. Waterman was associated with Curtiss while Curtiss was pioneering amphibious aircraft at North Island on San Diego Bay in the 1910s. On 21 March 1937, Waterman's Arrowbile first took to the air.
