I Finally UPGRADED to a Dedicated Astrophotography Camera - Altair Astro 26C

Ғылым және технология

Hi everyone, in this video, I will go over my Altair Astro 26C. Why I picked this camera, how does it compare to a normal dSLR/Mirrorless camera, and my overall impression of it.

    Congrats, Angus!! I'm using a Touptek version of the imx 571 mono camera. It's just fantastic, no other words to describe it.

    Great image! And quite the leap, from a DSLR to this dedicated astrocamera!!. Enjoy it, keep the videos coming! P.S. After watching your videos (and other youtuber's as well) I recently decided to get the l-extreme filter, and man I don't regret it, for the images of nebulae are now very much full of details (I could not have ever gotten same level of detail without it, unless taken from darker skies I suppose...). So thank you very much for sharing your experiences here. Clear skies!

    Yeah I hope it was helpful! Nothing wrong to imaging with a dSLR, I mean I will continue to use mine. But there are some considerations to take into account. I hope people consider them before switching over. Thanks for visiting! :)

    You deserve more subscribers and views. I found your video to be highly educational. I think I learned more about these cameras from your simplified explanations than through my googling and spec-reading. I'm on the fence for a dedicated astro-camera myself, still trying to contemplate if the short AP-season (September - April) and unpredictable weather we have this far north is worth it. I have an 80ED and an EQ6-R Pro which I use a ha-modded DSLR with today. Liked your picture too. Funny story - When I first got my Star Adventurer and wanted to try my 70-200mm on it, the very first target I did was just to center Sadr and do about an hour worth of exposures.

    Thank you! Those were some really kind words and they're enough to keep me going! I really hope that I can help de-mystified this amazing hobby. Like you, I generally found help and advice to be difficult. The unpredictability of my own weather is what holds me back from going monochrome, I fear it will take me months to complete a simple picture. I switched to a dedicated camera because I personally think my Canon 60D's sensor is on its last legs (but I'll keep using it until it dies), that and I want to use harsher filter like the L-eXtreme. The longer exposures required just didn't work well with the Canon. I think an upgrade is worth the consideration but only if you feel like you're approaching the limits of your HA-modded camera. I know I did, and therefore, I switched.

    A lot of yelling, a lot of cursing, a lot of "why the f*** does my picture look like that?!"... But then finally, that one magical session where everything falls into place, and you know you've got it. And it will make all of your wasted sessions worthwhile.

    Thank you! But I did use a filter. I used the Optolong L-eXtreme filter to help block out light pollution and to really isolate the HA signal. I think I noted it on the picture. I WISH I didn't have to use a filter.

    Wow that’s a nice upgrade : this camera is a solid and serious piece of gear. Sure you will bring your Astro photos to the next level. I’m about to save bucks to get the zwo 2600mc pro. Dslr’s are so convenient to use for beginners but also for portable, lightweight nomad setups. I’ll continue to us it on my night trips with my staradventurer mini and my widefield lenses. I just see the limits with the hot summer nights we have here. It’s a lot more difficult to process noisy images and the fact dslr’s are not cooled, takes me much more time ´cause of the need to shoot calibration images during each session. It’s just the way to go if we want to take our imaging to the next level. By the way, nice and pedagogical video as always !

  • @nocturneastro2539

    @nocturneastro2539

    Thank you! dSLR are far easier to use and setup, and you can be more portable with it. But there's just no getting around the fact that normal dSLR/Mirrorless were never designed to perform under such low light conditions, and have exposures in the scale of minutes. I've never processed such clean image before. My SF nights aren't hot, but it definitely doesn't help with the overall noise generated by normal camera. Plus, I just couldn't bring myself to pair filters such as L-eXtreme with a dSLR. The resulting exposure time would just be too long.

    I thought I'd try commenting on from my other channel to see if it works Angus The Dumpy Dalek Observatory; 1 week ago I did comment before about the 26C & ASI 2600MCpro but it seems to have disappeared now, anyway I didn't have the budget for either of the two I've just mentioned but I did manage to buy an Altair 269C from Altair astro over the weekend at a star party for a very good price, I even managed a first light with it but DSS was saying no stars detected so looks like I'm on a bit of a learning curve with this one. Loved the video & yeah these cameras are very purple lol

    I'm sure I'll figure it @@nocturneastro2539 reducing the star detection value % did nothing so I ended up changing the values in the Fitts settings so DSS could detect the stars, probably the wrong way going about it but it worked not that the resulting image was anything to go by as the dew at the star party was soooo bad even the sensor was fogging up.

    I wish I could do that kind of comparison, but I don't have the ZWO or QHY to compare. Why did I pick the Altair Astro version? 1) It retails less than either ZWO or QHY, I think the buffer memory is different, but that's irrelevant to me because I won't be doing planetary imaging with it. 2) An used example became available for less, and it was basically brand new 3) It comes in purple 💜 😃
