Just a beginner astrophotographer from San Francisco, California. I hope I can bring more people into this hobby and show this is possible in a light polluted sky

Hey man would you be able to put out a video showing how you got the mount to be controlled through ascom instead of synscanapp. Im just downloading things that ive got no idea lol and am having troubles finding the things you brought up in your video. Would be much appreciated

I have not got my location coordinates set and it's generating an error to that effect. Unfortunatelyu, it doesn't tell me how to set them or under what menu tabs ??

Thanks for the excellent review, Angus. I've been window shopping scopes in this price and size range for grab-n-go visual observing. This is probably not the scope for that, but I enjoyed your video. Clear skies!

i had sold my Sharpstar 61 EDPHII and ended up wishing I had kept it, so when I found a nice Raptor61 for $275, I jumped on it knowing its just a 61edphII. Quite happy with my used Radian Raptor 61 purchase :)

Great stuff brother. I have a question. Do you think the Antilia filters are better? when it comes to halos. I also live in a 1-3 bortle scale

Hey... You can definitely polar align any manual mount using the NINA script. I've been doing that with my Star Adventurer with my computer being completely independent of the mount and camera. I just take pictures, move the RA axis around and then plug the SD card into my PC to perform the alignment via plate solving.

@Nocturne Astro, but 1 gallon = 3.785 liters, not "3.875".... In America we use both metric and imperial, obviously imperial is most common but both are easily convertible. I know this video is old but you used very simple Math and explained it well. I remember this simple unit elimination/conversion from long ago. My question is, from where do the "angular diameters/sizes in degrees" originate from? I ask as I possess no training/education in Astronomy/Astrophotography.

I wouldn't call $750 entry level at all. Reflector telescopes firmly have the real entry level apochromatic field covered and any narrowband stuff can be covered by a good doublet or a reflector. Anyone considering expensive triplets because they have bottomless pockets is better off getting a reflector and using the extra funds on a even better mount and/or other equipment in my opinion.

Late to the party. Here’s the thing imop. The software for processing Astro photos is continuously Improving to the point were it’s almost eliminating noise , gradients and all sorts of image flaws . It’s getting so good that I see no value in introducing complexity and cost into the image train via a dedicated Astro cam . I’ll stay with my Canon T5i and 80D thank you .

Angus, It appears you don't usually employ the available focal reducers on your refractors. From your videos this doesn't appear to be a problem at all. What is your opinion as far as reducers are concerned, unnecessary?

I'm seriously considering this mount to have with my Sigma 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports lens on a Nikon D780. Weight wise this would come up to about 3.7kg or 8.2 pounds. Specification wise the mount should support this but I heard you say lenses up to 400mm. What are your thoughts on the configuration I'm thinking about?

Another great video. I am just now at the point to get a DSLR camera to get started diving into astrophotography. You brought out some great points of what to look for and watch out for when purchasing a camera like the shutter count of which I would not have know about. Then there is the "practical" side of using equipment and to tailor it for use. Thanks again and clear skies1

I am so happy to find your video as I was just getting ready to purchase the AT102ED but will now upgrade to the AT102EDL. I am more of a visual style amateur astronomer but I like the idea of having the potential of using a larger telescope for astrophotography. I currently have the little brother Astro-Tech AT72EDII to expand and begin with astrophotography. Also, you do a great job with your videos. It is like being there and discussing astronomy/astrophotography with you. So just keep doing what you are doing because it rocks and yes I subscribed. Clear skies!

I had to laugh about your statement about the opportunity for an impulse buy because that's exactly what I did before even seeing your video. ;-) I had been into astrophotography some years ago and have a lot of really nice equipment, ie Celestron Edge 8 inch and all kinds of cameras but since I moved my location is not practical to build an observatory and began looking for a portable rig to get back into this hobby. This is a great solution for me. I live in eastern Utah under dark sky's in the desert so needless to say I had to get back into the hobby. Things have come a long way in the past ten years and I'm excited about doing this again. Great video ! Cheers and all the best from Moab Utah... ;-)

Mine is currently set up with a Samyang/Rokinon 135mm, f2 and EOS600D controlled by a ZWO ASIAir mini and ZWO EAF and Mini Auto Guided. I leave this set up so I can take it out to the backyard at very short notice. I also use it occasionally with my Lunt LS 50 Ha scope and my Cat 51, but control it with my laptop with EQMod / ASCOM for these scopes as I use cameras with these that are not supported by the ASIAir mini. You are right, it does sound like a coffee grinder!

Hi Angus. Thanks for the tutorial. I use a similar but much simpler way to remove halos, still working with 16bit TIFF files same as you. 1- Strip out the stars in PI with Starnet as you did. 2- Use clone tool in PS to clean away the halos on the starless TIFF image- this leaves a cleaner background and no need for PS layers. 3- Use PixelMath in PI to recombine the two images.

Great video, hey question for you. You stated you didn’t like the Ipolar, well I don’t either as I can’t even get mine to recognize the Ipolar and I am at a standstill (no the vendor and manufacturer has been zero help…long story). Anyway being a beginner I am trying to figure out if I can get around this problem and polar align a different way. I have the CEM40 and not the 70 like yourself but otherwise I assume the mounts are similar other than capacity. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated! Cheers.

I use my c8 for public viewing at my astronomy clubs public nights at our local college. I use my Redcat 51 and Canon EOS Ra, 60Da, Sky Watcher Star Adventure, Orion Sirius mount, and Astro Tech 72mm doublet for Astrophotography. I also use my Meade 16” Light Bridge to look for deep sky objects in my yard. ❤
