I think Bill Hicks might have really hated the guy, because of the music. Unless that was just Bill's persona Normally when people say "you need to separate the art of the artist" it's to defend the art when the artist was a terrible person. Bill went the other way around. He wouldn't separate the art from the artist, so that artist was automatically a bad person if their art was contemptuous of his values As I got older, started to think maybe Bill was not all that great a person himself. He was a misogynist for starters. He was unreasonable in his gatekeeping of art. He told some pretty messed up jokes about young woman, with the implication seemingly that they were underage. I won't defend him anymore. He was a legend for a lot of reasons. I've never seen him actually get read for this stuff. People by and large seem to view him in a pretty rosey light. And there's reasons for that. But I listened to every little thing of his that I could find, a thousand times, it's all in my head. And I think when you do that, and you grow up, a picture emerges of someone that put their own art and ego and appetites above the lives of the people around them. And that's a sad thing to realise about someone you once respected. ... sorry, this has nothing to do with anything. It's just something I always think about when the topic of Rick Astley comes up, and I realise, against all odds, I think I actually respect Rick more than Bill. The best of what Bill did dwarves the best of what Rick did. But that's not enough. The worst of what Bill did is makes any criticism of Rick seem ridiculous

Rick's always been cool. I left school in '89 and there was this one lad who looked just like Rick, 100% spitting image, he did his hair like Rick and we all called him Rick. He liked it, we liked it, nobody called him Rick as an insult, we all thought it was great that he looked like Rick. Rick Astley has always been a legend, and the whole rick-roll thing, it's just a laugh, not a reflection on Rick himself, or what people think of him. Practically any song video could have been used instead to make the joke, Rick was never the joke, the joke was people didn't get what they expected. Rick's a legend and that song is legendary. Gotta respect Rick for stepping out of the business to benefit his family life too.

Well done doing this awesome chat session Justin and Rick! So much you both were talking about resonated with me, however not for me personally…..it was what my musician son has experienced! Getting gigs in pubs while not old enough to buy a drink, it was play the gig and get out before the licensing police spot them. Battle of the bands in country Australia and eventually winning one! Moved to Melbourne and played with all manner of different people and bands until he put together his band Flyying Colours and one of the gigs they landed was being the opener for Johnny Marr during his Australian tour…..so watching this interaction between you both was almost as if I was sitting at your table just out of camera shot but nodding my head in agreement with what you were saying. I’ll admit to being a proud dad but that’s not the reason for the comment, there is something cosmic going on here with the content, Avalon is one of my favourite albums of all time which I spin regularly and I vote Yellow Brick Road because it blew my mind when I first played it and still does too this day. Thank you both for the best chat on KZread that is 100% real with 0% ego involved. All the best from Australia, cheers 🍻

Having only seen the videos, where he's dancing, and, yes, rick-rolling, I got the impression he was just a pale-faced dude with a voice that couldn't POSSIBLY be THIS guy's, singing in front of dance music. And, of course, I never PICKED UP the CD covers and looked at "Whenever You Need Somebody" or "Hold Me In Your Arms" to see that he played instruments and that he WROTE songs, but I did like "Strong Strong Man," and "Cry For Help". I'm glad to see him around, and I'm glad he's happy making music and performing. His birthday is next Tuesday (Feb. 6). We were both born in 1966.

I was taught guitar with no theory but understand what to play through technique that was taught to me by fellow musicians but all of my mates play by ear and can’t sight read. Total respect for his band as well. I had the pleasure of meeting Ricks bass player Jay at a pub in Wells, in May 2019 and had a great chat with him, and then watched him play with Rick and he is an unbelievable player. Justin has certainly had some amazing artists who are amazing and well respected and totally grounded in the music industry. Micheal Starr and Myles Kennedy to name a few, including Justin himself. I love the Darkness and this channel.

Lovely chap. I have his Smiths covers on loop! P.s. your theory aligns with why I loved Rick + Blossoms’ smiths covers. Absolutely redeemed that music for me.

Loved this interview. Great hearing all the ins and outs of then and now music. One question I would have loved to hear Rick's answer to; is if he has listened to any of Ren's work, and what he thinks about it? Having seen interviews with Ren around the album battle for the charts with Rick, and hearing how much respect Ren has for Rick,; I had hoped to hear Rick's thoughts on Ren's music. Never mind, next time..... Thanks for sharing this moment. Fabulous setting by the way.

Got to say that was a brilliant interview/podcast. I was Ricks target market during his prime, but never knew anything about the man beyond the videos and the singles. I feel all these years later I now know him somewhat and appreciate him in a way I never could have without seeing this interview... Great job Justin.

Superb interview. Loved the DX-7 chat. My fun DX-7 fact is the Tubular Bells patch was used on both the Top Gun Main theme and Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas. Both C notes, one octave apart (C2 and C3). Keep up the excellent work Justin.

I think once Justin revealed he had more DX7 tattoos on his back, Rick would jokingly ask him to get naked. For science, of course.

Great interview/conversation. I've been rick roll'd quite enough back in the day and never really got into his music, but he's such a nice guy with a pleasant sense of humor. Felt more conversational than an interview, which I prefer.

I hardly ever comment on You Tube but this is one of the most refreshing, intelligent, funny and entertaining interviews ever. I used to work as a music producer for radio and remember the Stock/Aitken/Waterman time very well and I can't say I ever liked their stuff, although their productions were of course extremely well executed. However, I always thought that Rick Astley had a good voice and was an excellent singer but never followed his career. I heard of his Smiths Glastonbury gig and found it suprising and brilliant. To "meet" him here on your channel was great. He is the real deal and I wish him happiness and success, whatever that means, for everything his doing. And it's great how relaxed and open Justin is as interviewer. Thank you! Justin: you're doing the Rides Again shows in the UK. Are there any plans to do something on the continent, Switzerland for example...

This is an astonishingly good interview. I was quite young when Stock, Aitkin & Waterman were around and none of the SAW music has never been my cup of tea but it was fascinating to hear about it from Rick. Rick was very interesting and personable - i could have listened to this for another hour or two. I'm off to try and find a video the Glasto set now!
