We live in an age of very public, glorified narcissism. Too many people absorbed in their own image. It's disgusting. Good for Miranda, calling them out. Recently, I went hiking to a waterfall. Two vapid, narcissistic young people were taking "sexy" pictures of each other in front of the waterfall the whole time. Nauseating. I hate that "influencer" is a thing.

Yup you nailed it. It's not about capturing the moment. Nobody goes back and looks at pictures they took at a concert or watches the video. It's all so they can post it online so they can say look at me, look how cool my life is.

I still remember, twenty-ish years ago, how you completely stopped a Darkness show in Belgium to call out a fan who was shouting homophic slurs at you. "Are those the only English words you know? Here, let me teach you some other ones: respect, inclusion, politeness, non-discrimination". You're such a hero, Justin! ❤

then there's the show where he made everybody turn off their filming and designated one guy -"Nick" - as the official videographer of the song! He told the crowd where to later find the content. (always thoughtful Justin) Another time, seeing that people were filming and not "bouncing" & enjoying the moment, he stopped and had everybody hand over their cellphones to him. 😂😂🤣🤣 It was a riot of hilarity!! People clamouring over each, happily giving up their cellphones to Justin which he then placed inside Ru's bass drum til the end of the show when he pulled them back out and carefully handed each back to the rightful owner. Another humor filled, loving moment between artist and respectful fans. Once, he noticed a guy texting in the middle of his performance. With a sparkle in his eye, Justin stopped the show, curiously requested the phone, finished writing a cheeky text and waited for dude's wifey to reply. Everybody stood around engrossed in the outrageous JH moment. Jus answered when she called and proceeded w/ an entertaining back & forth. This man is legend!

As a former concert photographer, my job was to document the event so the audience didn’t have to, but rather get lost in the experience. The moment I stopped photographing concerts and attending them, I started to really enjoy them. How can you experience something if you’re looking at it through a phone? Put it down and be in the moment!

When I met my nieces and nephews for the first time I brought a camera which was kind of a big deal at that time and I said the same thing- ' hey let's put the camera down and be here in the moment with each other, to which my nephew replied, ' Great! I'll get a picture of it!" smh lol

As a current photog, I only take photos in the initial song or two and then I stop to enjoy it, even if I have rights to take photos throughout the entire performance, I will only take them at the start and the end, I too want to enjoy the performance.

Go to a school performance and just about all the parents etc have their phones up. I tapped the shoulder of the parent in front and asked politely if they could put their phone down so I could see the stage, by the way she looked at me you would have thought I'd just asked her to sell her child or something.

Makes me miss my youth when we didn’t have cameras in our pockets every second and just lived in the moment❤

I still enjoy the outdoors and fishing and just being out of the house. I Treet my phone like it's still a land line, when I leave the house I set it on airplane mode and don't look at it until I need it for something like directions, checking out what kind of insect that is or bird 🐦 etc. But I don't talk to anyone until I get back home after all that is how it was when I was growing up, a telephone was only good for one thing, calling and talking to another person. No computer or someone in a different country that you can't even begin to understand what they are saying!.

Word. Smart phones have ruined the live music experience (and have turned too many people into ADHD addicts with a lack of self-impulse control).

Just got back from a holiday where people were taking endless selfies as they ate, sunbathed, lay in the surf etc. One woman went through 3 bikini changes like she was on a professional shoot. It’s all about how you look on social media, rather than actually enjoying whatever you’re doing. It’s the same at concerts, but worse because someone is on the stage pouring their heart into a performance for you.

I went to a Bob Dylan show last year and one of the prerequisites to entry was that all phones and cameras were put in sealed security bags so they could only be used in an emergency. The result was full crowd immersion and a unique experience. Probably the greatest live performance experience I’ve ever had.

I saw Bjork in a festival last year and she insisted people did not use their phones during the show, I thought that would be impossible in a festival scenario as it seems lately people are just filming every second of their lives there, but she did it! No phones, no cameras, just full attention to her and her art.

Was at a Tears for Fears show recently. Some people next to us were taking selfies for like 15 minutes with the flash continuously going off. We found it very distracting and took us out of the moment. Totally with Miranda on this.

In recent years, I've seen shows at clubs in Japan more often than in America. Flashes are forbidden there during the shows. I don't know why the selfie obsessed people like you saw can't use no-flash mode. But then I don't have a cellphone; I use a traditional camera. But don't cellphones also have a no-flash mode for taking pics?

​@@James-lw3gi I was articulating no assumption whatsoever. I was relaying my observation about Japanese concertgoing culture compared to here, and I asked a question, which you did not answer. I did not insert “selfie-obsessed” into the conversation. Fixation on taking selfies at a public concert was already the topic of blazeofglory1982’s post. That post specified "15 minutes." That is much more than "a photo." Of course doing it that long is obsessive. But I never stated that every concertgoer is selfie obsessed. Actually, my first thought while reading blaze’s post was they paid their money to attend so why can’t they take pics amongst themselves if why wish. But a second later, I put myself into the mindset of the performer who needs to not be distracted, and then of the fans around them whose concertgoing mood is also interfered with, particularly if the selfies takers are talking at the same time and / or holding their cameras in the way. I don’t try to get others to give up owning cellphones. Other people pressure me to try to get me to get one.

Those front row/VIP tickets are insanely expensive, and many times, they aren't even bought by fans. They're bought by influencers, who aren't fans, but want to be seen at all the big shows. You're right...they care more about the reactions and likes that their photos will get, than they do about the show. Or the other people at the show, who are actually there to see the show, who have these idiots standing and posing right in front of them as if they're the only people at the show.

just so you know. i was there at your vienna gig and the guy who threw the beer at the stage (at you) was removed quickly by fans and securities. he pissed everyone off since the beginning of the concert and everybody was thankful that you pointed him out and the rest of us could enjoy the show. so thank you for not just taking it! you handled that perfectly!

They paid their money and so should be able to take a photo if they want to. They were probably having a girls night out and just having some fun, it's not that serious. Without paying fans, there wouldn't be a concert.

How could anyone not be on her side? There's so many idiots at gigs now. Taking endless pictures, an inability to stfu. Gigs are a moment. I don't even remember so many gigs I've been too because I don't need to. Music is now, it's energy, it's flow.

I remember hearing an interview where the artist (I believe it was Mike Patton) said something like, live performances are a shared experience for the people who are present for that particular show, and are not meant to be recorded and shared with the world. I am paraphrasing, but that always made so much sense to me. Just enjoy the experience! Be present, don't worry about "showing everyone" what you experienced. These fans could have easily took a photo for posterity at a time when Miranda was not in the middle of a song. As a theatre performer, if I saw someone turn their back to the stage and start taking photos, I would be so distracted. Miranda had every right to say something. People are paying a lot of money to see her and if a group of people's actions are effecting her performance, than 100% she should remedy that. Good for her.

Gigs in the 80s and 90s with no mobiles were much cooler. Everyone was there for what they really were there for, not chatting, not taking photos to show half the world, which they don't know, just enjoying the moment. In festivals, half of the people are just posing, drunk, getting in the way, chatting next to your earhole... boring.

I'm old now, so I have taken quite a few steps back :D Funny thing is that when you're headbanging you've gone to see the band, but reaaaaally haven't seen them :D I now enjoy listening and watching what's happening onstage, but then you have all these idiots around you... might go back to the front, I have social healthcare service now, so that area would be covered :D

Hi Justin! Fab episode. I’ve just finished with my band of 15 years for a number of reasons but mainly because our female singer was constantly using her phone on stage during our performance! It was nothing to find her taking selfies and videos of herself to post the next morning on facebook! We had a few complaints from audience members along the way and she just kept doing it 🙄 This kind of behaviour is indicative of how much some people have gone down the social media rabbit hole. How sad 😢

🙂 Back when I went to concerts, I always got backstage, Zappa, Rush, etc., & got to meet people like Steve Howe on regular meet & greets. 🙂 Saw U2 play in a small one room venue, Snakefinger in a back room of a student union, was asked to hang out with 999, saw the Dead Kennedys in a basement bar where they left because the lighting system was being pulled down by the fans. 💸 Tickets also weren't the equivalent of a mortgage payment back then.

I recall seeing The Darkness at The Gov in Adelaide in 2020. We were quite close to the stage, my sister and I. There was a guy standing behind me. He kept yelling songs the band should play while they were performing. So Justin stopped singing and started talking to the guy. I felt really bad that The Darkness with all their talent have to put up with people like that. In fact, all of us at The Gov put up with him, and I feel I should've turned around and told him to shut up.

Here in the US we have a let's say semi famous, genius artist that goes by Unknown Hinson. If one yells out a request he will stop the show, single you out and commence to rake you over the coals. "This is my show and I'll play what the hell I want too, when the hell I want too. You got that punk?" I don't come down there at Wendy's and mess with you at your job" Check him out , Justin, he might be a good review for you. He does country parody, mixed with rock. His guitar skills are excellent. Went to a Tony Bennett concert (90 at the time and still put on a hell of a show and had already been diagnosed with Dementia too). There was a row of about 6 drunk people behind me who proceeded to talk and giggle throughout the entire show. It took all I had not to turn around. This man is a living LEGEND and they had the balls to come in there cooked up and disrespect him and everyone else with their behavior. I'm 100% with Miranda on this one. Those women probably made her feel like last minute entertainment at a 30 patron dinner show. Come on people show some respect. We've completely lost our manners and only look out for #1 anymore. It pisses me off too. Just heard he passed today, he made me smile yesterday remembering him. GOD BLESS YOU TONY BENNETT. ❤

Sounds like row of drunks when I saw The Eagles years ago. I paid some good money to be 5th row and got to hear "yyyyeaaahhh" and scolding everyone with "are y'all at church?!" (It was Dallas). Thankfully their high wore off and they went home early. Hate inconsiderate people.

Agreed. I saw Tony Bennett a few years ago at the Symphony Hall in B’ham - awesome. He asked for the mics to be turned off at one point, so he could enjoy the acoustics, and his voice still filled the place - luckily there weren’t any p*sheafs in that night, and everyone stayed quiet. I’ve been to other gigs where there have been groups of p*ssheads there treating it as their private party, and it’s been really annoying. Also, boiled sweets at the theatre - WTF is all that about? It just gets to the dramatic bit, and some idiot starts to unwrap a sherbet lemon……..

What people seem to miss also is that the photographer was using flash photography, meaning that Miranda was trying to sing while a big camera flash was going off repeatedly directly at her. Can't be easy to maintain concentration and emotion with that crap going on.

One of the main reasons I stopped going to large concerts was people who would act like they were in a park, playing with balloons, cheering and egging each other on. So much commotion and noise that listening to the bands was impossible. Smaller venues allowed me to enjoy the performance (I didn't go to watch the band, but to actually listen...sigh). Guess I'm just old fashioned...you know actually listening to the music. Zappa used to stop concerts and berate idiots...my hero! Peace & love, Uncle Brother

My friend went with me and was like "you clapped after every song," as if confused. Now, I was first chair in Orchestra all through school. This was a metal show, but I had to explain to him that this is how we show appreciation for a performance. I would do the same at a play or ballet only more quietly. Some people dont know but there is no excuse for rudeness from everyone. Turning your back to a stage is pretty darn rude. I like all the arts. They are giving their time to you, it's the same as chatting during a lecture.

Unquestionably Team Miranda. People don't adhere to any etiquette whatsoever at concerts or anywhere at all anymore. I went to a Nick Cave concert at the end of last year and the tickets were pricey! And there were people in front of me, drunk AF who talked ALL THE WAY through the show and really ruined the experience for me and everyone around them. They were so selfish and really didn't care that they were making the night worse for the people around them who'd forked out a bunch of money for a show. GOLEN RULES: 1) Don't keep your camera up all night filming the whole show, 2) if you're super tall, stand at the back! 3)Be kind when you're shuffling past people (say excuse me), 4) don't get smashed and talk all the way through the show! 5)Don't sing over the top of a singer during a ballad. BE KIND That's all.

I agree with almost everything but the height thing. I'm 6'7", that's not of my choosing any more than you chose to be short. Why should I pay the same as you but have to stand at the back when you could just stand in front of me and those behind could just step to one side or the other if they can't see? I shouldn't be penalized for being tall any more than you should be for being short, it's just a matter of being respectful of everyone. My existence in an audience does not prevent anyone else from having a good time, just move a little, or ask me to.

I'm 5ft 8, thank you very much and I'm very mindful of shorter people around me and I do take notice that I hope they can see and I always OFFER to let them stand in front. It still sucks having a 6ft 7 person stand in front of you, so you get zero visual experience. Sorry you feel slighted being tall and being able to see everything, while the rest of us, just have to guess what's going on. And HAVE to ask you to move or let us through, and you not having the tenacity to be able to work it out for yourself.

@@witch_haunts_ghost I'm paralyzed and in a wheelchair...and at GA floor shows...all those short people who complain about 6'2" and taller blocking them, have no probably standing in front of me and even grabbing my wheelchair to try to move me if my presence is inconvenient to them... Usually this is small venue stuff and venue staff is usually looking out for me...that's the saving grace.

I was exactly thinking of people like yourself on my way to work this morning and thinking of access and what not at venues and exactly that, lesser tall people and tall people in the way of you....I don't know where you live, here in Australia (Brisbane at least), I know a lot of venues these days do try to mitigate that issue, so that at least people in wheelchairs or assistance seating, can enjoy shows as well. And my job is actually to make that happen at our events!

At my last Jack White concert he asked people before the concert to leave their phones in pockets. I loved it. Using phones is also very rude to the audience behind you. It's sometimes hard to see the stage because all the glowing screens held up by others. Extremely annoying.

She was right to stop the concert. They were treating her as a backdrop to one of their memories during a heart felt song instead of including her in the memory. She was being treat like an object.

You are so right. From a position of no one being allowed to take cameras into a concert to the current state where everyone has become so narcissistic that they just have to be in the picture. Those women were the rude ones.

This is a situation of where people think they can call the shots because they paid for a ticket. Social media has made a mockery of concert going. It’s like doing a gig and you have a table of people drunk out of their mind and being louder that the performance. It’s happened to me and other musician friends of mine. We are not Muzak!! We have spent years honing our craft only to be disrespected. You’re coming to a concert not a photo session with your friends. Performers are human beings and there is nothing more rude that an audience member hijacking a moment .

How was taking a photo of themselves and wanting the artist in the shot calling all the shots? How is your experience the same as this in any way at all? They weren't drunk or being rowdy. They just wanted a single photo of themselves as a collective with the artist. So they didn't have all eyes on her for 20 seconds. Wow. This is narcissism at it's finest. Plane and simple. The song was probably significant to them as a group. This has been taken way out of perspective, massively. 1 photo and a flash going off is hardly ruining the show. She's a self absorbed entitled snowflake. She should have been flattered and jumped into the shot for fun. Not ruining the night for others by throwing a baby fit. It was their exclusive experience.

As a singer/songwriter who’s had to play gigs with people screaming while they were drunk.If I was in her position.You damn right I would stop the show and let them have it.When you are singing you enter a zone,and it’s hard to stay in that zone with people screaming,taking selfies,etc..

I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. You are right about the zone. For their selfishness to take you out of it is disrespectful to your real fans there as well as to you. I'm remembering how Nick Drake gave up performing live largely due to people talking (and maybe eating and drinking) thru them...if he'd lived in the selfie era, I'm guessing he might not even have tried performing live.

I agree with you and Miranda. What is happening at concerts is akin to what happens in galleries and museums where the "audience" "viewers" etc. think they have ownership of the artist and the work/music that is produced. I will add that we should not overlook the envy element that leads narcissistic people to want to glomb on to the creatives and harm them instead of respect them. I was at the gym and heard this segment. Good job.

People have become very entitled in recent years. Just because you’ve bought a ticket does not mean you have the right to act like an asshole, especially to the detriment of all the other people there. If I saw a large group taking a photo like that during an emotional part of the concert I’d be pissed off as well. It’s distracting to the other concert goers and to the artist. Enjoy the moment and get photos in the down time between songs.

I went to see Derren Brown in London, we paid a lot of money for second row seats. The show is a physiological thing perfomed mostly to a silent captivated crowd. The people in the front row were talking the whole show. They ruined it for us behind them to the point Derren Brown was distracted by them and interrupted his own act to ask them to be quiet. Unfortunately he stopped short of having them thrown out. I expect they were rich city dwellers for who this was just another night out so they had no respect for the artist or the cost to other people.

That sucks! I've seen Derren a bunch of times and I've noticed there are moments in his shows where he kind of encourages a chaotic chatter amongst the crowd while something is being revealed... Those moments can allow those who are clearly drunk and a little rowdy to get too comfortable and start to intrude on the show a bit. He has always pulled it around quickly in my experience though. Sounds like they were at it from the start in your case!! The lack of self awareness of those who persistently talk through shows/concerts to the point where it is a distraction to the other people around them (and even the artists!) will forever be baffling to me..

Sometimes I wonder if these people even paid or just had connections for free tix and go to brag. I cannot imagine actually being a fan and doing that. It’s disrespectful to everyone. I was at a Fiona Apple concert once and had 2 couples in front of me talking the entire time. I was singing to myself and fully immersed in the concert. A security guard kept coming by and I was sure he was going to say something and he did but it blew my mind. He asked if they wanted to be moved to the second row!! I had no idea they were even available and they all went. My husband and I could only laugh because it made no sense whatsoever. There were empty seats around us, how he missed who was really there for the show was just bizarre!

I believe you are spot on. I’ve been to a few shows where the artist states “no cameras” ahead of time and it’s brilliant. The entitlement off “fans” is mind blowing. Standing behind arms with cameras up simply just sucks. Excellent topic.

I have no problem with people taking a few pics or a video at a show IF they are not being disruptive or obnoxious - to the artist(s) or fellow audience members - with it or doing it through the whole show. Throwing things - especially things that could injure - absolutely needs to stop. What happened to just throwing bras and panties?

My fave artist had a show last weekend, and someone in the audience threw him a cigarette and a lighter. That kind of thing is ok, and it's clear he appreciated it. (even though most of us wish he'd just stop smoking for his own sake ;-) ) But it was clearly not thrown at his face, and thrown in a way that he could grab it before it even hit the stage. As for taking pictures... you can take a selfie before the show starts with the stage in the background. Other pics, keep them at least focused on the artist.

This incident at the Miranda Lambert show they keep calling a "selfie", but that's not what it was; it was a big group of women all lining up and posing for a photo during a ballad... That's a bit different than 1 person turning around for a quick selfie, IMO. Though, I can still understand why an artist might get annoyed by a 1 person selfie. It really just comes down to situational awareness. "Am I being a douche?" is a question perhaps more people should think to ask themselves.

That was NOT what happened at the Lambert show. Taking some discreet selfies amidst a crowd. These women were in a very exposed VIP booth right in front of the stage, and they stood there viewable for everyone taking selfies of themselves and then starting to make photos of groups of people with the flash multiple times. Footage from other viewers show it. Went on for ages. People also agree to not using flashes when they buy their tickets. Even the VIP f...ers are not above that.

Absolutely spot on. The headlines around this made it sound like people enjoying the show being chastised for taking a quick photo, but seeing the actual footage that would be totally distracting to the musicians and those around them.

Can you imagine standing up during a play at a theatre, turning your back to the performer, and taking a group photo whilst the actor is delivering their lines. It would be totally unacceptable, as it was in this case where the artist is performing a mellow number. At a concert or festival it’s different when everyone around you is jumping and bopping about, enjoying themselves and having fun; then you do want to capture the moment. Joy of joys, I have my ticket for the Roundhouse in December 🙏

Sadly, right now, I don't even have to imagine as I know this has happened at theatres in London. When I go to the theatre, especially one I haven't been to before or one that is particularly beautiful, I will take a quick snap with my phone BEFORE the show begins. I don't post it online, I just like having a pic as a memory - ONE pic is all you need ffs - and then I put my phone on silent and sit and watch the play or gig. I'm old school and old. When I went to rock n roll gigs in the 70s, 80s and 90s then yeah, go mental in the pit and have fun. The band want to see that too :) But when a singer is singing a ballad - jeez, just sit down, shut up and listen. You are not the fucking star on the stage. And as for your iPhone? Stuff it up your arse so far you can get pictures of your lunch. Oops... sorry for ranting but these people spoil the shows for performers and "weird" people like me who actually want to just watch and enjoy the show and live in the moment. 😎

One of the best things about a concert is not only experiencing it for yourself but having a group experience. You kind of all feel connected in the moment. When you have a bunch of people off in their own worlds recording on their phones it kills that vibe.

Thank you for showing more context on this as most people are only viewing and commenting on the vid that only shows Miranda’s reaction. Seeing the huge distraction those “fans” were creating along with blocking the sight lines of other (probably not a$ “well appointed”) people shows why Miranda absolutely did the right thing. It's not like they were rude to her, this could have been a very personal song for this group of ladies. And now they're probably not fans anymore. Shouting them out just for taking a photo. She should be flattered they wanted to document a special moment. Not tell them off like naughty kids. The audience wasn't angry with them. What a self obsessed Karen. Ridiculous thing to do. How dare she tell them how they should or shouldn't enjoy their experience. If they'd stood up and was being drunken loud mouths the whole night,yeah I get that. I can honestly say it's been a while since I last enjoyed an audience, so I understand the feeling of disrespect that this singer may have felt. At one gig, I even experienced a QUEUE of people all wanting to request that I sing some obscure song or another, rather than listen to what I came to perform as a show. It has changed the dynamic of the audience/artiste relationship that the audience members feel ENTITLED to choose the material for you, even at the risk of displeasing the rest of the people.

Justin- I liked that video where you stopped the Darkness while playing "I Believe . . ." when you saw all the cameras shooting and then assigned one person in the front row to shoot that performance. That person did a great job-capturing the band and also panning back to the audience to capture the sell out crowd having an experience of a lifetime.

How is this a thing? She is perfectly entitled to tell people to be respectful to her music at her show.

Justin, I was at your shows in Melbourne, Australia last October and during the encore you stopped mid song during I Believe in a Thing Called Love and told everyone to put their phones away. I'll never forget the way the room changed. Everyone started jumping and were 'in the moment'. It was great!

Some years ago I was in attendance for a "swans" performance. What a show! Gira took the stage and addressed the audience informing them that he didn't mind the cellphones for the first 3 songs but at that point they would be reminded to put them away and join them in the moment. Also that it's been known to piss him off enough to have folks ejected from the venue. And that's what happened. As usual he hung out with us after he performance and chatted about whatever for an hour or so.

I went to see Warduna at Shepherds Bush about five years ago, and the crowd didn’t stop talking until the last song. 35 quid and a two hour drive to not hear the band I’d waited six months to see. My mum is a bugger at small gigs, more than once she’s turned round and said “did you pay to see the band or to have a chat?!” to someone loudly talking next to her 😂

I saw Florence and the Machine last November (who were excellent live, particularly Florence Welch's vocals) and she had a word with the audience too. She politely asked people put their phones away and just enjoy and dance. It was a fantastic moment and I'm so glad that others are calling out audience behaviour and what they paid good money for.

Well I agree with Florence. Enjoy the music, the singing and jolly well let your hair down ( unless your bald) and dance your pants off. BAN MOBILES AT CONCERTS WHILST ANY CONCERT IS TAKING PLACE. That is my opinion for future music venues. Print it on the ticket and do not allow anyone to use their mobiles or they will be thrown out.

yet she is happy to have the money from them , if it was that much of a problem , ask them to leave and reimburse their ticket money , if she has no rules on mobile phone usage in the small print , then its not up to her to dictate what people do when they have bought a ticket, otherwise we will start seeing singers go into the bar and start dragging people out to watch , or dragging people out of the toilets because they are missing the special song she wrote. Kids are weird using mobile phones at a gig, but they have paid , if they want to ruin their own experience by taking photos thats their loss

If I was doing something at a concert that was so distracting to the artist that they would stop singing and call me out, I would be so embarrassed! If I go to a concert I am there to listen and watch. Take a picture before or after the concert!

People need to recognize that our bards are precious members of our community. It's extraordinary how much performers have to tune out just to share their work with a whole room (or stadium) full of people. All the bits about sharing photos of food or concerts or selfies on social media actually cheapen fleeting precious moments, rather than preserving them. Oh, it would be neat if you'd review a track by St. Vincent called "Digital Witness", Justin. It addresses this topic at least peripherally. :) I appreciate your take on this, and I quite agree with your observations. When I'm in a place, I try to just BE there and immerse my senses to savor the moment, which will never come again.

Justin, you are so right, experience the moment, don't record it. I was at a Peter Gabriel concert recently, and so many people spent almost the entire gig with their phones in the air. They are watching one of the great rock artists for possibly the last time, and you can't properly appreciate the moment if you're messing about with a phone.

Placebo have been asking people not to take photos during shows on this tour. It’s been quite refreshing to enjoy the moment. Take a quick photo to remember but not posing with the band/singer in the background that is weird. They could’ve taken a photo before the show of them as a group. It did seem very rude for those fans when you actually saw how they were getting in a lot of people’s way and blocking the view.

Social media has for sure had a negative impact on the concert experience, in my opinion. I miss the days of no video or photos aloud 😅🤔

At one point, absolutely no cameras or recording equipment was allowed in at live venues, except the Press and that was only for a limited time, usually during the start of the show. Just taking a still photo alone would get a member of the public removed from a venue, warnings were even printed on the show tickets. Why are camera/smart phones now allowed into venues at all, why is it now permitted to both photograph and/or audio-visually record the show, then literally publish it online, what has changed legally?

It’s so hard to describe how much worse the concert going experience has changed unless you experienced it. Of course I only mean some of the people attending as a negative. I know I sound like an old person yelling at the sky but I swear if fans could experience a couple shows how it used to be, the experience (for most) would be a game changer. As Justin says, being in the moment. It’s so powerful.

I was at a Doobie Brothers gig (how's THAT for being old enough to be shouting at the sky or a cloud! :) ) last year where I had second-row seats, which should have been pretty good, except for the guy in front of me recorded the entire show, no breaks, on his phone with his arm extended out so it was directly in my eyeline. @@phoenixgirl70, Every concert I’ve been to in the past three- five years has been ticketless. Your phone is your ticket. That’s what’s changed, and paying $28 (pre-tip) for a drink. VIP and meet & greets are different, too.

If I attend a concert, I'm there to see the performers on the stage and not 1,000 cell phones from audience members trying to capture the moment. Put the phone down and enjoy the show. Take pictures and video before and after the show but not during.

Im old school and cant believe people are using phones to film the gig and not bother to watch properly, however if people want to take selfies at a gig they have paid and can do so , its not up to the singer to be so precious that not everyone is listening , unless they are throwing things , shouting and generally ruining the gig for other audience members it is of no concern to the singer ,, you cant sell tickets then tell people what to do once they are there. Or she should have a complete ban on mobile phones , have strict rules on what can or cannot be done , then and only then can the singer moan because some people are taking selfies while she is singing

Just because you bought a ticket doesn't make you entitled to do anything you like. Unfortunately, there are more and more people who feel entitled all the time. And these will take selfies without consideration for anyone around them, or will get up and leave because the person you paid money for to see calls out distracting behaviour. Fully on Justin's side. And Miranda's side.

I was at a show few weeks ago, performer indicated at beginning of show NO PHONE PICS, one lady ignored him, he stopped show and called her out. No prob after that. I thought it was appropriate. Show went on great!

Honestly I'm so grateful that my first concert experience post-lockdown wasn't anything like this! My brother and I did a two day roadtrip to Los Angeles to see Rammstein, a band we have been fans of since I was in middle school and he in grade school (my brother is three years younger than I am for context), and we-- including everyone else there, had been waiting for three, nearly four, years for this concert to happen as it kept getting postponed because of COVID and lockdown. Needless to say, none of us were going to let anyone ruin our good time! Well apparently, one dude didn't get the message, as he along with his girlfriend, decided to start drinking before showing up to the venue, and then drank even more once they got there, and tried picking a fight with the people around them about others "taking their spot" (it was standing room only where we were), along with just being belligerent and the guy tried getting into fist fights with multiple people. Luckily, us in the surrounding group near the guy kept our cool and we all worked together to signal security and got the guy and his chick kicked out of the concert. One other concert-goer even said, "Nah, I know all of us have been waiting three years for this to happen, and we're not going to let anyone try to ruin our good time!" to which there was a chorus of agreement and cheers. I was honestly so proud of all of us that night! I don't know what's going on through these people's heads to have the audacity that they can interrupt a show for any reason (be it taking pictures with the flash on-- which, personally, I don't think it's a big deal if you want to take a selfie at a concert *without* the flash on, though personally when I've done that with whatever family member I'm at the concert with, we do it before the show starts because we're there to have a good time, but to stand up and block the view AND take pictures with the flash on is just rude; and *throwing things* at the performer??? That is absolutely unacceptable!) but it's downright disrespectful. It's not "cool", it's not "funny", it's a shit thing to do! If you're going to pay hundreds of dollars to see an artist that you supposedly like and are not going to pay attention to what's going on, boo them "for fun", be obnoxious and ruin other people's experience, or THROW SHIT AT THE PERFORMER(S)... then just stay the fuck home! You don't need to be there! We (other attendees) don't WANT you there if you're going to be an asshole! You don't get to act like jackasses "just because you paid money to be there" - that's not how shit works! Just don't go! I know a lot of people are going to be quick to say that "It's a Gen Z thing", but it's not. Folx who are in their 30s do this shit too, and it's not okay at any age! Everyone should know how to act their age at a live event, regardless of what generation you're from! (And I know that really young people aren't pulling this shit... yet, because they're either too young for a live event, or if they're going to concerts, they're usually chaperoned by a parent that will show/tell them what behavior is and isn't acceptable. This uniquely a 18/20 and up issue, and it's fucking embarrassing.)

I'm of an older generation, so I know this is a generational difference, but it's one that I really have difficulty in wrapping my head around. I still actively go to concerts. I use vacation time to travel all over the place to see live shows. I've even travelled overseas multiple times specifically to go see concerts. Now, I'm not rich or anything, but I'm single with no kids, and I travel on the cheap. But experiencing the show is really important to me. I rock my butt off at shows. I honestly don't understand the mindset of just standing still so you can take low-quality phone photos or videos instead of actually experiencing the show. It seems like a lot of people are more interested in being witnessed at the show than actually being at the show.

If it's distracting from the show the behavior has got to go. If everyone in the audience set up a 30 sec photo shoot there would be only chaos. Cheers Justin!

It's very interesting, I've taken photos and videos of concerts I've been to, and realised I very rarely look at them after the fact, so I don't do it anymore. I have my brain's memory bank as a reminder ❤👌

As a life long fan of Prince I went to many of his shows, he had strict rules against photography (rigorously enforced by stewards) as he wanted people to be ‘in the experience’ while also being protective of his material. Never diminished the concert experience and if anything made you focus more on the mans performance. At the end of the day, just respect the artist (and other fans) and their wishes, that or don’t go!

I was working for a music magazine many years ago and went to see AC/DC at Wembley Arena. Even though we had press credentials, we had to struggle to get all the camera equipment past security. Now everyone turns up at every show with their phone with built in camera and thinks they can film everything and screw everyone else. I'm amazed the bunch of "Karens" at Miranda's show didn't demand to "see the manager" lol. Technology was supposed to raise us up as a society but it seems to be making a lot of people an embarrassment, as if their brains are stuck on "me me me" entitled narcissist level 10 😂

1, Leave the artist alone, 2 sing quietly, 3 Don’t drink too much, 4, TAke a few pictures, buy merchandise in the venue 👍

I have watched a lot of stuff where other performers have called out people from the stage. Stopped the show if they see that a fan is hurt to get them help or called out people fighting or guys assaulting women. The Smashing Pumpkins actually cancelled a show a few minutes in as several fans got injured in the melee and one person actually died. It happens more than you think.

I wouldn't even throw things at Nickelback or any band that I don't like. It's their job, and they're just people too. Let's not be monkeys.

A photograph with "flash" of multiple women is worse than just a selfie because it's majorly distracting and inconsiderate to the people nearby trying to pay attention to the performance they paid for. Many people take selfies of just themselves, without flash, and it isn't distracting to people nearby.

These seem like some rich entitled b*tches who got called out, and they did not like it. They were behaving like immature spoiled brats, regardless of their ages, and in particular of how old they are they should be ashamed of their actions. One of them apparently was a soc media influencer and made this out to be a bigger issue than it should be, and the regular entertainment media is eating this sh*t up and amplifying it .

I haven’t been to a show since 1999 but the 50 plus shows I did attend I never once brought a camera or even think of bringing one. The memories are fantastic

Last gig I went me and my husband took time to record a 10-ish seconds video during the favorite song of our boy who couldn't come (being 3), it was only to show him we were thinking about him at this moment. This wasn't that we didn't enjoy the moment or that we wanted to brag/display we were here, it was only to share the experience of something we love with someone we love... Now obviously it's not the same as recording the whole show or spending time taking selfies...

Sir you nailed it perfectly at 8:45. BE in the moment rather than capture it. Experience it, live it, appreciate what's happening as it's happening. Kudos for your perspective.

Some people want to BE in the moment, and that's fine. Maybe others want to photograph the moment, and that's fine too. Unless it was explicitly prohibited when they booked their tickets, they're allowed to do so. Different people, different opinions.

For me, taking photos & film of an event is part of my enjoyment. I am being in the moment and enjoying it. I get far more joy from those photos and film for years afterward than memory alone. I get really tired at being preached at that I am not enjoying an event or getting the most out of it because I film some of it. Who is anybody to tell me how to enjoy something? As someone with a parent with dementia, I witness how photos and film bring back visible joy to someone who struggles with lost memories.

@@Glawnerd664, I used to not understand recording concerts on cellphones, until I went to one with a cellphone. I can hold the phone below my head, and watch the show and be in the moment. I recently rediscovered my concert ticket stub collection, and found concerts I have no memory of seeing (Motörhead and Skid Row are two of those). Now we need the phone to get into the venue. I don’t put the videos on social media, though. They’re for reliving the high I get at a good concert, and only my favorite songs.

I was at a Morrisey concert in Liverpool when some berk threw a bottle of water at him which hit him in the head. He had literally just started singing the first song when it happened and he stopped the show and walked off. Thousands of people sullenly got out their seats and had to tramp out the auditorium. I wonder what makes them do it? Uncontrollable excitement?

I asked two girls for directions to a gig i was going to, and they looked at me like i had just beamed down from a different planet, and said nothing..but started scrolling through their phones...still saying nothing...they seem to have lost the power of speech! 😆

A generation and a 1/2 of people growing up isolated, anonymous (and emboldened to behave poorly), and without the social contract inherent in dealing with people in person has created beings that are entitled, clueless about how to behave and incredibly narcissistic.

They wanted to have a photo to remember this occasion. Talk about taking a moment and and turning into this sh*t show , just because they did something so small

I went to a Rolling Stones concert a couple of years ago and took such a photo of our friends BEFORE the show. Still captured the moment. Didn’t interfere with the moment.

The Golden Rule that applies to everything - treat others the way you would like to be treated. Simple as that. Makes total sense. I will never understand how some people have decided that they are entitled to have/do anything they want while having no regard for others. This whole “capturing the moment” thing is out of control! Like you said, Justin…BE in the moment! Of course a few photos are cool to have for memories, but watch the show with your eyeballs, feel it, get caught up in it! I cannot stand this culture trend of “Look at ME!!” I can see why Miranda stopped her show and said what she said (and she wasn’t out of line for saying it). Tin Man is a very heartfelt song and you can see from the clip that the audience was pretty quiet - the people involved with the photo chose that moment because they WANTED to be seen. There were a million other opportunities to take that photo when it wouldn’t have caused a disturbance at all. But that moment was chosen so eyes would be on them, and that’s disrespectful in every way. That tiktok clip is a prime example of why I hate that platform. She said she wasn’t there, hadn’t seen it - but then proceeds to comment about it using a clip with Gwen Stefani Shelton to “prove her point.” Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were married at one time. This whole thing disgusts me. People need to stay out of matters that don’t concern them. The ever growing lack of respect in general is very disturbing to me. I appreciate your thoughts on this, Justin. You are always fair and balanced. ❤

Yes that Tic Tok woman was so obviously a Blake stan and of course would see Miranda as the villain. So obvious she chooses a Stefani video to compare and the situations weren’t even close. Like lady, you weren’t in the marriage and it’s over, get a life! Social media has just ruined so many things and especially how people act. I hate it so much.

I would love to see a video of her gate crashing one of their super important presentations with a few from the band and crew, all turn their backs and take a photo, thus taking the focus of the whole point of the situation. I was like well, 2 sides to this until I saw the clip, and it looked and felt wrong, and maybe it's just me but came across as condescending, like, "we've paid, so we will have the "entertainer", in the background". Didn't come over well at all in the clip.

A few years ago I saw the Flaming Lips play and a more than VIP whatever level..."Heavens Blessed People", I was in VIP, which was off to the side (ticket lunacy these days), anyway my brother purchased so we could enjoy one of my fav bands. a group of the "Heaven's Blessed", way overdressed for a fun outdoor venue decided to pose directly infront of me and have their photographer take photos obstructed my view. I was livid...and literally wanted to fight.

Went to see Michael Bolton last year and there was a young ish couple taking selfies (with flash) talking throughout and the girl even made a phone call until we all turned on them getting them booted out. Society as a whole right now sucks. People just don’t like other people or help each other anymore.

I've been at an Eddie Vedder gig in London where he asked everyone to turn their phones off before he started... Like back in the old days....bloody marvelous atmosphere!

I've never taken a photo at a gig, where I position myself in the photo also!! Noooo no no no. 😂 I'll take a couple of photos and might video a fav track, but tbh, I hold my phone against my chest and close the cover so that I stay in the moment, I'm not disturbing people around me and hope the video records something.... 😂😂 Justin, I'm coming to see you guys, first time, Brighton next month. Loved you since PTL came out but not had the chance to see you live yet. I'm treating myself to VIP too 😃 adore your album, just makes me happy ❤️ you guys are very appreciated!!

Just to add - I adore trying to take gig photos with my little Canon RX100 - love photography and music is a massive part of my life - having the opportunity to combine the two is magic :-D I've only brought the camera to 2 gigs so far... Bryan Adams and Mumford & Sons... As invariably I end up seriously getting into the gig and can't be arsed taking photos LOL The photo on my youtube profile was at a Mumford and Sons gig a handful of years ago - Delta tour - They started playing Delta and theres a section where they drop a shite load of confetti... photo opportunity and was so happy with the end result - So I'm hoping, if its ok, to bring the little camera (its tiny, compact camera, but has great capabilities) to my first Darkness gig at Brighton 😀 Love to try capture you guys too especially with your superb costume choices haha lol Seriously can't wait to hear PTL in full!

Would be interesting to get your take on the recent issue where a so called fan was filming themselves screaming and singing at an Adele show and the artist calling out security for trying to femove them and ensure that it wasn’t spoiling the night for those around the incident.

They were acting like they were at the zoo taking a selfie in front of the monkey cage. No acknowledgment that another human being is there trying to perform. I'd be pissed too.

I always remember a Ginger Wildheart Birthday Bash gig, Ginger said if anyone is holding up a phone in front of you, everyone has Ginger permission to grab the phone and lob it, all of a sudden all the phones dissppeared! lol
