My hometown. My family has a saying: “Savannah is a nice place to visit, but not a nice place to live.” The touristy areas are great and if you have money you can find a good home in a very nice neighborhood but outside of that...good luck.

I was born and raised in this community you call "worst hoods"!! You've NEVER lived in this community, don't know the inner workings or ever seen the "families" that inhabited this community. They are strong, resilient and loving people that raised their kids to do the same. It's a shame that someone whose never lived in this community, just ride through and give the observation that this is one of Savannah's "worst hoods"!! If you knew the people that live/lived in these neighborhoods, you would never take this position. I played on these parks, walked these streets, made many life long friends in these neighborhoods, went to elementary, middle and graduated from high school, all from this neighborhood. I can guarantee you that YOUR neighborhood has changed over the years as well. NO neighborhood remains the same. Stop giving neighborhoods stereotypical labels. You can't call out the life you've never lived!! You've NEVER lived this neighborhood life, so please don't comment or spread falsehoods on something you know absolutely nothing about. These people love their neighborhoods and do all they can to protect how and where they live. Outsiders always want to come in and give their portrayal of a life they've never seen happen in these neighborhoods. It's not a "worst hood", it's a NEIGHBORHOOD and I'm damn proud to say this is where I was raised!!!

He's racists. There are really nice Black neighborhoods everywhere where Blacks are living abundantly with nice manicured lawns and well kept homes and for him to post this is very biased. Even some nice neighborhoods have a run down home or two on their block. He won't show trailer parks or white slums. Typical of a white southerner.

I was a police officer in Savannah for 12 years. The majority of the people that live in these areas are an older generation. Even the younger generation that live in this area aren't really that bad. Just like anywhere else, they have some neighborhood beefs but otherwise they're like family to each other. Compared with other cities of similar sizes in the Midwest (and South) it's a great city. If this was truly the "hood", it wouldn't be this easy to drive through and film (like Atlanta hoods or Miami). I'm from Los Angeles and lived here for 25 years and I'm glad this is home.

This looks like a wealthy suburb compared to pockets of American cities. A lot of Americans have no idea just how bad most cities can be in America. There are parts of places like Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, Philly, NYC, etc that are absolutely indistinguishable from places like Lagos and Johannesburg. So many Americans fled the cities so long ago that they really don't understand the cities anymore. Detroit is a perfect example. Once called "The Paris of the West," it is now the "Lagos of the West" and that might be an insult to Lagos. 1/2 of it is burned down or abandoned. Lots of people do not have running water, or if they do, it's illegally turned on.

I've seen real homeless people who camp out in the middle of the woods tarps and setups, I also seen very close to downtown Indianapolis along a river next to an industrial area, tiny gardens ect.

@@aidanmurphy7624 You are correct. Savannah does have a crime rate, but for people like myself we know where to go safely. Most places during the day are fine. People in Georgia tend to be armed and the criminal know that so it keeps crime down. Its mostly drug related.

Looks like a decent neighborhood to me.

I have visited Savannah's downtown area and of course you have to drive through the hood, but after looking at this video...its like everyone has said...an older neighborhood with a few abandoned houses, but still better than the ghettos you have highlighted in your videos. It looks clean more like a retired community in some ways.

U wasn't in the actual hood then my guy.close maybe but if I a native born and raised you know there some places in Savannah that are alot worse. But like anywhere if you from there it's not that bad unless your actions make it that way. As long as you mind your business and stay in your own lane you good for the most part. But there are sheisty people out there so if you a tourist and u find yourself in the hood try not to make it so obvious that your a tourist and mind your own and you good.

@@55robinwood Last I checked, the terminology of Hood is actually used in the title of this video not just by me. Also I actually praised it and not downed it for whatever it is. I am 52 years old and the family communities you mentioned existed more so when we were growing up. People were passing away not being killed just because like now. Over the years, people love saying it 🙄 was such a small, quiet...really. Alot of mess is going on in those towns too. So changing the designation of something doesn't necessarily change it. It's people. Even though, I must admit it's more likely an older group of people.

Great video, and doesn’t look too bad and very clean too.. but it’s the crime you can’t see in the video and it’s that hidden sadness of poverty I guess.

Couple things. Thanks for bringing attention to Savannah. This is ABSOLUTELY not the Southside of Savannah nor is it even one of the bottom 5 worst neighborhoods in the city. This is a tad lower income but certainly not a high crime ghetto or WORST area. You also drove through the Gordonston neighborhood which is 15 min away not half a mile.

Heck, I've visited there when I was a kid and never felt unsafe as I did in certain Atlanta neighbourhoods. There were cops in the 7-11s then and loud music playing in a bar, but I walked from Oglethorpe Mall to my Aunt Zama's House down the road, caught the CAT bus to downtown, and went out to Tybee Beach with my mother, sister, niece,, and college friend and nothing bad happened to us. We even rode past the houses my grandparents used to live in and felt safe.

Big fan ! Some of these places would be interesting to see at night.

A, this is not the worst neighborhood in Savannah. B, this isn't the southside. C, you're kind of being insulting to a historic neighborhood (Cann Park).

It’s a sign that people are investing in the transient things of less value (personal property) because they don’t feel it’s worthwhile to invest in more permanent things of greater value (land, home). Think of it also as the cycle every young person goes through as they grow up if they are able to keep their income going up and find a place to settle down : first, you’re interested in status symbols like clothes, car, etc. to show the world you’re doing well. Later, you don’t care about the trappings so much and you’re more interested in making a nice home / nice life for your growing family.

@like allthings you’re saying that when given a chance (predatory lending) someone has access to a loan for more money than they’ve ever seen so of course they are going to go out and spend it all? Yes, that’s what I’m saying, too (minus the predatory lending angle). Poverty hurts, and when you have a chance to break out of it for just a moment, it feels great. The financial hangover afterwards, though, is a b*tch, especially when you realize the car you just bought lost 30% of its value when you drove it away but you still have to pay that money back. Eventually you learn to appreciate things that retain their value. Affording them, though: that’s another problem, as you point out. Many of us live paycheck to paycheck and not everyone has savings or the ability to get a decent loan if disaster strikes.

There are definitely worse places than that in Savannah.

the first neighborhood has homes built in 1920's probably. just old and maintenance needed.

I lived in Savannah in '73 and '74 as an 11/12 year old. Back then a lot of these streets would have been unpaved.

You dont understand poor black folks.... There are numerous 6 figure incomes in that neighborhood. It may LOOK poor, but southern blacks care more ab community, family, and neighborhood familiarity than having a big house in an unfamiliar hood with few connections or family members nearby. Your disconnect with how they think in these areas is big. I have lived here my entire life. Go ask them if they would move away from there to an affluent area, but surrounded by strangers.... theyll emphatically tell you No.

This is not the hood. This is the Westside of Savannah. Retired black homeowners stay in this area we don't considered it to be ghetto or hood. I see you rode down my street my parents house is well over 150,000. I went to Beach high school and us Bulldogs are very proud of our area.

I used to live in some of these neighborhoods. Back in the day it was beautiful and peaceful. Alot of the older people kept it up. Alot of them have died. Savannah is beautiful. The whole Savannah doesn't look like this.

Not bad....people seem to keep their property cleaned up..looks good to me🙃🙂

That's part of the southern portion of the west side not the south side. South side would be south of either Derenne or Abercorn and Whitebluff. East Savannah by East Broad or Water ave was very run down when I lived there. The Savannah College of Art and Design has caused bad prices for poor people in Savannah. Properties that are worthless have jacked up prices like it was NYC.

It such a nice and decent neighborhood drive. However, the fact that its a hurricane-prone area, I dont think I'll ever want to move there.

Your negativity towards our town is not appreciated. People live in all of these neighborhoods and simply because they don't repair their houses to your expectation does not make them less deserving of your respect. Consider researching your story for facts and focus on helping people rather than bringing them down further.

I was born and raised in Savannah Georgia, it will always be home to me. And that neighborhood also. Good people there. I knew most of them that lived there. All cities have crime.

Your neighbourhood looks fine to me, and I have no doubt the people are nice and care for each other, which is probably something you would find in the ‘nicer’ areas where people judge others according to their wealth. Not much neighborly love their.

Savannah is nothing like it used to be. High Crime was at its peak in the 90’s due to the drugs! I was born and raised in Savannah GA! SCAD brought a lot of property and changed things for the alumni. Even old Elementary School 🏫 I went to they have their own bus 🚎 line. A lot of housing projects have been revamped. I got family there and I still visit. I stay in the Atlanta area now.

The only reason there is a poverty problem is because of SCAD. The parents of the students buy all the houses in Sav and jack up the prices to be completely unaffordable for locals. They're also tearing down affordable housing to create dorms for Scad kids.

I’m really grateful for my life after watching this video

We were there last weekend & stayed in a real bad part of Savannah, we were scared & minority there but nobody messed with us. We meant to book a room by River but opted for a motel room near enmarket arena, we saw places a lot worse than your video. We had to walk a mile to get to enmarket arena due to parking, we were petrified. I’d have given anything for a local to have showed us around. We were lost!

Looks like a neighborhood in anytowm usa..no gangs hanging out at the street corners with heroin,and no homeless camps like Seattle WA is now!

That’s my neighborhood on the west side of Savannah . Most of the people got federal indictment on gang charges if was the 90’s or 04 he wouldn’t made it through the first street.

What makes a town unsafe? The residents plain and simple. Poverty, in which I grew up in is no excuse for crime! Where does personal responsibility come in? The mothers aren’t teaching their children how to get out of poverty when they get older it seems and if you’re bringing children into the world you can’t support, you probably shouldn’t have a lot of them! I was expecting to see the little trailer part my family lived in off Ogeechee Rd.

I see detached houses with their own plot of land with paved roads and infrastructure, the neighborhood has electricity, running water, sewage, cable, phone, internet etc. etc. All the amenities of modern life. It is because of the people who live there that cause crime that makes it a bad neighborhood.

Lived in Savannah for 3 years in a historical neighborhood to compensate the inability of being back in Italy. What you have shown is not a bad neighborhood at all. There are places much worse than this one and closer to downtown. As others have observed, this particular neighborhood is not close to downtown. I am not saying this gorgeous city doesn't have issues, but let's be truthful.

Savannahs south side is safe, mid and downtown has lots of crimes compared to other areas specially i think of what they called the dirty 30s streets. We are peaceful here in southside. But compared to other towns and cities savannah is very very peaceful!! Come and visit us.. We love and we welcome tourists here!

I've live in Southside, midtown and downtown. Southside is everywhere USA - it's fine just nothing unique about it. Midtown is gorgeous and safe loved everything about it. Downtown is a mixed bag but for every bad thing there are 20 great things. I also lived in the "hood" and probably had the best experience there. Cheap rent and and you are so close to everything great. Downtown isn't for families it's for people wanting to live that lifestyle.

You've shown worse Nick. A lot of the homes just need some love and care.

Nick I see nothing wrong with the looks of this neighborhood.Most of the houses look fine to me.A lot of people build their houses on bricks because they don’t have basements and if it rains too hard it won’t flood the house.In fact it looks so much better there than In Brunswick which is an hour south on 95 S.

Go to frazier holmes and parts of bacon park u wanna see the worst parts of the c port or go ride around certain parts of east side, the 912 is weird kinda goes from nice to ghetto very fast

Working wages are very low in Savannah. Gentrification has already happened in the areas of town.

Hi Nick. If you didn't inform me that this is a high crime area, I wouldn't know it from looking at it. There are trees, the lawns are well kept, the streets aren't filled with trash, no hoods hang out on the streets, and most houses seem in good condition. But stats matter.

Yes some bad parts in some cities aren't terrible

In Scotland this wound be a very wealthy and prestigious area... looks fantastic to me as a Scotsman! BRAVEHEART!!!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

1st of all the area that he showed was not the South side it was the West side. I would say yes it is the hood but literally nothing happens during the day everything happens at night. Half of the area are elderly couples and the other half are families with children. Literally this area is not the worst.

I grew up on the south side, so no, definitely not the south side.

Go to the State Streets. That's gotta be Savannah's roughest area.

Used to be but now those homes are being flipped and gentrified. I always thought of it as not a good neighborhood but its changing.

Try showing the street name as we remember our lives there,love my beautiful city

It's the sulfur smell of the paper mill....maybe it makes the residents lose their minds.🤔

Oh they have that.i remember going up in Washington and Oregon ya that oder on a misty day isn't pleasant.

Great drive through Savannah. The problem with the boarded up homes is that it takes a lot of money for lead abatement of pipes and paints. It takes more to fix them than they are worth. Then there are those that are taxed out of their homes. There will always be problems. I might visit but don't want to live there.

You should do unboxing on Utah

I moved from Macon, Ga to Savannah, Ga. If this video truly shows the Ghettos of Savannah, Macon's Ghettos are on a whole different plain of insane. Macon has some truly terrifying Ghettos. However I will say, most people living in Macon's Ghettos are actually pretty friendly. So long as you don't appear to be "turfing" and are clearly not representative of a gang... They will be friendly.

With no activity on the street and with no children outside playing, is a indication of crime.

Hmmm. No kidding. I guess I could’ve looked at this yesterday. My tattoo shop I go to is on Bull St. I drove & walked around the neighborhoods between Bull & MLK. I did see a lot of police presence. But I guess I felt it was normal for a city.

I have lived here my entire life and that's honestly not the bad areas shown in the video.

I do appreciate your effort in making videos of various cities. However, this place is definitely not southside Savannah. It's not even pass the I-516. Southside is a lot safer in general. But 40-60 streets in that area is very dangerous. You could see bullet holes on buildings sometimes.

I grew up in that Cuyler Brown neighborhood and graduated from Beach High School.

All of the neighborhoods are clean, and most of them are well kept! It is better than most cities!

I drove through Savannah for the first time in December 1972 and there was no I95 and we drove through on RT 17 and that stretch was quite rundown and I was not impressed but it has improved a lot since then!

Reminds me of our hood in Wilmington NC but cleaner.

It doesn't look too bad. Well kept and not trashy or hoody.

I live in a poorer area in Canada. But people like me are moving in and fixing up their homes. Plus the city has an urban renewal plan so we have new roads, lighting, and parks now. There are also more services to help people out of poverty. It is also an older neighbourhood with streets lined with large elm trees. I've had stuff stolen like some lawn chairs and an extension cord. But it was more affordable to buy a home here. If Savannah has issues with crime and poverty then perhaps they can start to tackle them. I feel like if an area looks crappy then people treat it as such. Even simply painting your house can make people respect their community more. Also getting rid of abandoned buildings and reaching out to risky areas can reduce crime.

Very interesting pair of videos. Savannah does look beautiful. If this was the California Bay Area, the homes in the high crime neighborhood, so close to nice housing, would be bought, rehabbed and sold for a good profit. Pretty soon there wouldn't be any cheap pockets left in Savannah. Revitalization would happen inevitably because of housing demand. I hardly see any apartment buildings, so it's making me think even poor people can still buy a cheap home in Savannah. Could be a a rental district, of course. But if it is mostly owner occupied, I am happy for the owners, even though crime is worrisome.

Recently since the pandemic our house prices went up, but 5 years ago some of those houses could be purchased for 50,000 or less. They have doubled since then. Savannah is unique because working class black family own homes many of which are paid off in full. They don't want to move because the neighborhood is close in and is relatively safe and they know prices are going up. I don't think they will sell until houses get to 200,000 around there. They know how close they are to the historic district. As you know, as time goes on these homes will be flipped. I just went to zillow and only 3 houses in that neighborhood are for sale..for around 100,000. Like I said, families don't want to sell.

@@55robinwood honestly, selling for 200k is pointless because they wouldn't be able to afford anything, anywhere at this point. they are better off trying to improve their community/homes. if they were in l.a. or sf, i'd get selling. because in some south l.a. neighborhoods, you can sell, move down south and buy a home outright because of all of the equity built up in their california home.

I used to live on the first street you turned on. 48th street my uncle still does. Just so you know this is the Westside not the Southside. That is a lie, people over there being poor for a 100 years. A lot of us have advanced. Such as myself, a lot of us are also business owners. Don’t assume someone is poor. Some of them even if they have the money to move they still won’t. Why don’t you go out to the hole or Garden City and get out and walk with your camera instead of driving.
