+Kienyew 73 - This is a car that makes perfect sense in the flesh. In the right colour combination, the Tuscan is bloody gorgeous and looks way more expensive than it is. Most cars from the late 90's/early 2000's have dated horribly and yet this looks like it rolled off the production line today. In fact, it still looks futuristic today. Yes, the Speed Six had terrible reliability issues back in the day but Powers Performance offers numerous upgrades that have improved the reliability significantly and they include a 4.5 engine that produces 450bhp...which is a lot in a car that weighs 1,100kg. The Tuscan will undoubtedly be a future classic and will rise in price significantly over the next few years. If I could afford to blow 30k on a 3rd car, I'd seriously consider it. With some modifications (engine and suspension) this is easily a 7 min 50 car around the Nurburgring. They're very, very fast.

I was fortunate enough to tour the TVR factory when Tuscans were in production, and it was a fascinating experience. These cars truly were handbuilt... even the engines were developed and built in-house. TVRs were made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, and their unorthodox nature was part of the TVR experience. Comparing them to other cars isn't really fair. You buy a TVR because you want a TVR.

Zephyr, let me spell this out in words that will draw a close to this ridiculous and pointless discussion. Doug made a statement that this TVR was one of only 4 or 5 in Canada and “thus the WESTERN HEMISPHERE”. I pointed out that geographically the “Western Hemisphere” (in quotes because those are the real words Doug used) starts in Greenwich, East London (in the UK), and since the Blackpool factory where these cars were built in is West of Greenwich that there are therefore plenty of TVRs in the Western Hemisphere outside of North America. Let’s be clear for those too ignorant to realise there is a whole world outside of their national borders, North America is in the “Western Hemisphere” (yes I’m sticking with the quotes as that is was Doug said), it is however not THE “Western Hemisphere” which also includes the likes of Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, and the entire f’ing continent of South America. We that live in the “Western Hemisphere” would prefer not to be relocated by people who have never looked at a map, let alone used a passport.. So I hope that clears this up for you. Thanks.

Another reason this car is light ... the body is fibreglass. Which has the advantage of not rusting. Trouble is, you put even a modestly powerful engine in something this light, and it has bowel watering acceleration. Which in a car without stability aids, is even more bowel watering. Basically, TVRs were old school sports cars for the sort of people whose idea of dealing with a five o'clock shadow was to reach for a blowtorch. You bought one of these only if you had every last neuron devoted to fear cauterised. Because when this thing moves, it *moves*. In a manner that makes you think you've taken the helm of the Millennium Falcon. Of course, if you want the ultimate TVR, try the Cerbera Speed 12. Which was so brutal (as you'd expect something with a fibreglass body, an aluminium chassis and a 7 litre V12 producing something north of 900 BHP, to be) that the company boss shat himself when he drove it, and in his one act of social responsibility, said "We're not putting this into production". The one example thereof can ONLY be driven, if you sign a special document which effectively says "if the car kills you, tough shit". No one has ever wound that beast up to its top speed, but it's rumoured to be somewhere in the region of 245 mph. Yes, the Cerbera Speed 12 is a car that can give a Veyron a run for its money, for about 12% of the cost. But you need the reactions of a Jedi to control it once it goes over 100 mph.

I studied engineering 2 miles from where they were made. TVR formerly produced sports cars at its Bispham, Blackpool UK factory. Blackpool was also the original site of Swallow Sidecar Company, forerunner of Jaguar Cars. The public road was their test track and didn't care about the 30mph speed limit. You could hear the engines from miles away. The Tuscan and Griffith could spin their back wheels at start in 4th gear. Amazing, crazy, hair raising cars. Once, when they got a letter from Europe about new safety tech, which were needed on cars, they threw the letter in the bin.

I love all the hate for this, I live about 8 miles from the old factory. If you saw the factory you would understand, this car wasn't built to be perfect, or work properly or be safe. It's just loads of fun (and death), my family friend worked for them and is a main repair mechanic for them he has T350, Tamora, Tuscan etc and they all have their problems but he always says he would never change them. This ain't not German built Merc this is a Blackpool, British built death trap.

I've never owned one, but I've driven a few. They are absolutely nuts. A Ceberra 4.5 will make an original Shelby Cobra seem like a sensible and safe driving car. The level of instant death factor is just through the roof on the big V8 Ceberra. Fun cars for sure.

every heavy object in a car should be placed liw - if you aim is low center of gravity for good road stability .. and how often does someone change a battery, as even maintenance is nowadays rare ..? The point to discuss would be jump start, as this could be a lot of trouble with the only access from below .. especially as on a passenger car the jumpstart without to get access to the battery or to opennup the engine hood would to contact the chassis earth strap on engine block and contact positive terminal on the starter magnet actuator ..so you would have to crawl under the car anyway

I had a 2001 TVR Tuscan S with 390 hp. Most thrilling riding experience ever. But you have to be focused, there are no safety devices between you and the engine. This is the purest way of driving a sportscar. Loved it very much. After two years of ownership I had no issues at all. Know your car, warm up the car properly and then enjoy it. Neglect and abuse at cold engines is the main reason for reliability issues.

I remember driving very quickly behind someone in a Tuscan on a deserted country road in England in my STi. I had absolutely no trouble keeping up but I didn't quite have the speed to overtake. We had a chat about our respective cars later and he said that he had plenty of power in reserve (which I hadn't) but that he was terrified that he would immediately end upside down in a ditch if he floored it. I was fine in my STi. This is a scary car.

Actually I would say getting a Prius is illogical if you are trying to help the planet. There is plenty of old cars from the 70's and 80's that were far cleaner to produce that today's cars specially the ones with electronic drive systems and lots of batteries on top of all of the plastics in vehicles now. My brothers 86 Chevy Chevette gets 40mph highway and 30 something city. And was far cheaper pollution wise to make than including all the material processing to make its parts. By this point it has amortized its manufacturing pollution. It is more logical to buy an older car and resto-mod it with a modern brake system, and anything that would make it more fuel efficient. You can even go with a less practical body style than the old economy hatch backs and get a I4 Fiero so you look cool but your just as slow as every other 80's economy car with 90hp. Basically think of it as a slower MX-5. 86 I4 Fiero w/5 speed got 21mpg city 32mpg highway.

Um I think you missed the part were the '86 Chevette gets 40 hwy 30something city. Several of the 80s economy cars got upwards of 40mpg. That's why I laugh when I see car adds boasting about cars getting 35-40mpg, seriously 40 years later and they are just now getting back to having 40mpg, by now they should be at 60-80mpg in economy cars but they didn't want to spend the money to engineer it to be so because the oil crisis of the 70s-80s was over.

Danny Hampton your right i did not know that very impressive! However fuel efficiency also doesn’t mean it doesn’t pollute air. Idk for sure tbh but for example myth busters tested it and even tho motorcycles burn less gas they produce far greater levels of greenhouse gas due to there exhaust methods and engine being different or something and assuming regulations were less strict back then, it should be a similar story. But if you know more let me know

Had one of these (same colour, same age, same non air-con model) as a daily driver. It worked quite well, I could fit kite surfing stuff in the boot and still have the roof down. It did gentle destroy itself when you drove it. Stone chips were a major pain partly due to the aerodynamics, each stone would hit 3 times instead of just once! nose, bonnet, roof! However, I never regretted putting fuel in it, it was fun. The speedo would dance around anything north of 110mph - I'm doing 90 or 160 or somewhere in between. It would pop and gurgle on the over run, tunnels were hilarious. The windscreen wipers were a token gesture. Fun car.

Another point is that the car lacked traction for drivers who really don't have the best driving skills and by having the windows removed, it sort of created downforce for the entire car thus it kinda helps in that sense that TVR themselves did not know about as they always say "TVR makes car but doesn't tests them. That's the owner's job".

I had a Tuscan as a daily driver for 5 years many years back, did over 30k miles, it was the 4 litre red rose in cascade blue, it had straight through pipes and decatted, on overrun flames used to come out the back. It even set fire to it's air filter once! Great car, used it in all weather conditions even snow and ice, never let me down. The boot space was very practical, I even helped an ex-girlfriend move house using it, but getting it serviced every 3000 miles was very expensive, in total on maintenance alone I spent £25k in 5 years, the joys of having it as a daily driver. I had to carry weights in the boot because in the rain if I was too aggressive with the throttle I could spin up the tyres at 80 mph on the motorway. With the straight through pipes the ground would vibrate behind the car and driving past a neighbour's house I would set off her house alarm, she was fine with this because she loved the car. At sunset the colour changed to a shimmer pink and blue around the edges so side on the car looked like it was lit up, I've got people taking videos of me on the motorway, it was a great car, regret selling it but so so expensive to run.

Chrysler also created the rocket that launched the first astronauts into space, losing a lot of key engineers to the space program for a greater good. The government bailed out a long time friend, not some crappy car company

My Uncle's mate had one back in about 2002/3. We were all staying at my Aunt's house and my brother was staying in a tent in the garden because we'd run out of space in the house. My Uncle's mate decided to take my cousin (then 13) out for a spin in the country lanes. My brother's head in the tent was about 8 inches from the exhaust when he started it up and then immediately revved it. To say my brother was pissed off with how he'd been woken up would be the understatement of the century.

Just returning from a 1500 mile roundtrip from the UK to the Nurburgring in a Tuscan. Swallowed 2 people's luggage for a week's trip along with the roof in it's practical boot. Handled faultlessly in hard rain and waterlogged Belgian motorways, scared some very expensive machinery on the Nordschliefe and stole their thunder and lens time in the paddock. But hey, reputations are made by kids on KZread with no practical experience to base their opinions... what do I know?

Terrible design surely means missing it's design brief? The design brief was to carry two people and their luggage on a Grand Tour at speed in comfort, so please elaborate on what part of that brief any of these quirks cause it to fall short of? Ever experienced one in real life before?

You may be suffering cognitive dissonance if you think there is no need to defend my point of view, compadre... Your dismissive tone and unwillingness to back up assertions of terrible design with reasoning justify why I put my point across robustly. This car is designed to be a GT, look good and go fast. It achieves those design aims by compromising in other areas, but none of these compromises represent "terrible" design. Some quirks mentioned in this video are undoubtedly compromises to fulfil the main design briefs (It's exterior light setup places form dramatically over function, as does the lack of mechanical door handles) but some are endearing eccentricities dressed up as flaws (e.g. the "disappearing" fuel gauge which is an adornment on an exquisite Art Deco instrument cluster... and is augmented by a digital readout of fuel level) and others are not really quirks as they are found in many designs (wheel arch battery). Again: is this video the sole basis of your assessment?

TVR owners are a special breed. They basically hate life, and want to die. How do I know this? Because a TVR's only goal in existing is to kill you. And what better way to go than at 120 mph, sideways, in a roar of exhaust and tire smoke? So a few "quirks" don't bother them.
