I Didn’t Get Good Hair | A Hair Story

LaToya Ebony’s 4c natural hair journey featuring the Royal Oils collection.
Check out the full Royal Oils collection at your local CVS or the link here: bit.ly/3L3G1N4
Royal Oils and Crowns of heritage previously did a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of 50 African Ancestry DNA kits. Let me know if you received one!
My hair story began the way I imagine most natural hair journeys begin in America; a lot of curiosity, anxiety, and confusion. I unfortunately, could not trace my lineage back to its roots so it left me with a lot of questions about who I am and what my hair actually looked like without a chemical relaxer. The biggest question of all was, could I love my true appearance regardless.
There’s been a lot of shame surrounding black people’s hair primarily since America’s involvement in the slave trade began in the 1800s. That criticism let to a lot of systemic racism that led to poverty and low self esteem for many people of African descent. Of course that’s the simplified version, but it’s also the truth.
I’ve decided to tell my hair story not only to invite you to understand my relationship with my hair, but to illustrate my connection to the stories of millions of black and brown people across the world.

Here we go with some dumb thumbs down. Why? What's to dislike about another person's journey? That makes me so mad! ANYWAY I came to share and remind you of how pivotal you were in my confidence to stop relaxing my hair. While we did that show (before you relaxed again) we had many conversations, including about your mom's feedback...which also made me mad, but your knowledge and that gorgeous hair really helped my perspective. During that show I was wearing twist outs; when the show ended I kept doing that as a way to convince myself I didn't need to straighten my hair. 6ish months after that show I did my chop. It was my third intention to go natural and I have you among those to thank for me finally doing it. I haven't looked back. So, thank you, again.

The good hair bad hair situation was not borne from from some innate primitive mate selection system we all have in us but rather from colonialism and white supremacy. So my whole life I've constantly heard people say that I didn't get the "good hair". Well, they're wrong. 4C hair is beautiful and unique. Everyone also needs to learn that It's common for African Americans to have different hair textures within our immediate families due to a mix of Native American ancestry and the horrors of forcible violation during U.S. slavery.

Only a very small percentage of Black Americans have Native American DNA and the majority of Black Americans who have European lineage do so because of interracial marriage, not because of rape. Also Black people are the most diverse group of people. People in Africa with no admixture have a range of skin colors and hair textures. I don't know why people insist on attributing our beauty and/or diversity to race mixing when the MAJORITY of Black people (including Black Americans) are not mixed.

Truly ST all the way the FU you ignorant twit who I wasn't even talking to. Like it was said, I don’t want to go too far from the intent of this beautiful video either.....There is though, a part of your comment @Blaze Hot, that needs correcting. RAPE is the primary cause of the racial diversity that is buried within the #dna of most Black People. Slaves weren’t even “allowed” to wed each other lawfully. Interracial unions absolutely weren’t ordained by any church, and even less occurring; were those couples; the couples what we see represented by interracial couples today. It was the “Passing” community of Black people that were more likely to be in interracial relationships. So although it MAY have happened; not nearly in the numbers that would have been necessary to account for the consistent presence of European/Other #dna found in most Black Americans. FYI....approximately 20% of the average Black persons #dna IS from “non-African” origins.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this video! The 2010 clip of you talking about going natural looked like an audition tape for like MTV or ANTM lol....wait? Did you try out for ANTM??? It was the vernacular for me. The 90s...what a time to grow up! This was such a great video. The head and shoulders does good on your hair. I know a few friends that have active scalps that swear by this.Thank you for sharing a little history of yourself.

There is something so interesting about finally chopping your hair... then going back to the perm, then it just not feeling right, even though you have had it with your natural hair... then chopping it off again... then back to natural..... there is just something about having said to yourself..."this is my hair, how it grows... this is who I am"... the perm, just never feels right again....even though now and then it makes its appearance on your head!
