I have all my exams this way. Oral exams which involve you in a video call with one, two or three professors asking questions, with minimal preparation time (sometimes no preparation time at all). In Belgium, where I'm from, you very often have oral exams, in which it is just you and the professor. The professor asks like two random questions on an entire module. Sometimes your entire grade depends on a 15-minute conversation. It's absolutely terrifying! I actually feel a bit more relaxed knowing that this time I'll meet the professors online instead of being sat at the other side of their office desk! Good luck with your exams!

Now is my turn to rant: I live in Brasil and I study architecture and urbanism and I think my university is making me sick. So basically we have 2 rounds of exams and the first one was supposed to begin today but now they are going to happen in the middle of june, online. Bare in mind I study architecture and this is a very practical course very much like go outside walk around the city and see stuff but now being online our classes are just not what they should be like, I mean they're alright my professors are doing their best I'm sure but that's not my point here. I want to talk about the online exams, I live in a country where not everyone has access to wifi or to laptops (laptops are very important in my course) so I have friends who aren't watching the online classes simply because they do not have access to those things, people that used the computers and wifi my university offered to make their university works and now they can't watch the classes??? I mean this is something my university should figure out because having wifi at home wasn't in the list of supplies we needed when we started this course but ok, all of the classes are recorded and people can watch it later when everything is better and the university is open again (and I honestly don't see that happening in my country any time soon with the president we have) BUT NOW WE ARE HAVING ONLINE EXAMS and the university let out a document with the "rules" to that exam so let's talk about them now: 1. webcam has to be on during the entire exam so the professors can go back to it and cancel your exam if they think you did something you're not supposed to. 2. The duration of the exam is 100 minutes. wtf??????? 3. Your wifi can only stop working ONE time while you're answering the exam and you have ONE minute to go back to the exam or it will be canceled. Now, tell me please how am I supposed to control WHEN my wifi stops working and how am i supposed to make it work again in one fucking minute????? I don't know about where you live but where I live my wifi takes a lot more than one minute work again. And as I said before not every student have access to wifi, so they're not going to do the exam? they're failling the semester because they don't have wifi??? I AM FURIOUS. if anyone read this thank you, I feel a little bit better now (but I'm still angry) :)

We had that rule with the webcams for online exams first, but then later the university decided it was against integrity laws and they are not allowed to film when it is in someone’s personal home! Maybe there’s a rule like that in Brazil that they haven’t looked into yet? Anyhow good luck with everything and I hope it works out 😕

I feel ya! I also had one with a zoommeeting in the background and I think it's especially terrible that my professor said we have to be ready to share our screen with her anytime she asks us to. Thankfully she never did (or maybe she did I turned the volume off obvi because how distracting would that be, hearing everyone work over zoom🙄) thankfully I had no wifi problems with that, but I did with my English exam where I had to write an essay. I barely manged to hand it in in time. And even then I still had a panic cry session on my bedroom floor, thinking I might have put in all this work for nothing. I'm having another one tomorrow, this one is more relaxed tho but still everything depends on the internet connection 🤷🏼‍♀️so we'll see how it goes

Best thing is that I specialise in literature so why does they have to make the word limit so short when they know that we’re so interested in literature and tend to write a lot. So frustrating. But I still somehow managed to do it, although it breaks my heart haha:(

don't even get me STARTED on online exams... they are the worst! I'm a vision science student and one of our exams last week was zoom invigilated. zoom crashed right in the middle of the exam and all of us were so confused and busy emailing our lecturers trying to figure out what was going on. Once we finally got the message that zoom had crashed for everyone and to keep going, I had 30 minutes to finish off about 50 marks worth of my exams. I barely finished on time but I know plenty of people who didn't get to complete questions worth 20 MARKS. They should have given us extra time, but they didn't and tbh they didn't even need to invigilate us because the exam was hard enough that you couldn't easily cheat anyways. Not to mention that you're hyper aware of what you're doing and where your eyes are travelling during the exam because you don't want to be accused of cheating. That just makes the whole exam that much more stressful, especially seeing as we had to use calculators and jot down calculations. Thankfully the rest of our exams aren't zoom invigilated... so I have no idea why they chose that particular one to be invigilated especially considering it wasn't even the hardest of the exams we had to sit.

Thank you for acknowledging how lucky you are to be able to do your exam in a separate room. I feel that a lot of the studytube community can be a bit blind to the fact that others don't have access to a private study space or a desk and push the idea of how vital that is regardless. I'm not naming anyone in particular because I actually love watching these people as well as you. I have a desk in my room now but up until a few years ago my room was so small I only could fit a single bed and a small drawer set in there so my wardrobe was on the landing. I had to do all my a-level work in school without taking breaks because I didn't have anywhere in my house to do it. My friends wouldn't understand because they were also in a similar situation to you, having desks in their rooms or at least a dining room where they could focus. Eventually they dropped me because I wouldn't hang out with them during lunch and break time as I was working solidly through the day 5 days a week. We had two small downstairs rooms that were linked by french doors so there wasn't another space in the house I could go and the town we lived in didn't have a library with desks. I couldn't afford to go to coffee shops or similar places to use their tables which is not the case now as my order is known among all the baristas at a certain Caffe Nero near my uni. If I was locked down in that house it would have been impossible to do my uni work and I would've risked failing when I'm on track for a first. Even so some of my assignments this month went bad so fingers crossed I don't flop. Sorry this is so long, I kinda ramble :P Good luck for the rest of your exams x

Hi! I am a biotech master student from Sweden and I feel you! I have two 4 hour online exams next week on Tuesday and Thursday and well...it is going to be stressful. I have a feeling that I will run out of time big time in both of the exams since they are suddenly open book. The courses I am taking would normally have closed book exams in exam halls, so we are kind of expecting them to change the format of all questions a lot. Normally I would learn the content by heart, look at old exam questions, and then eventually feel prepared. Now I just feel confused and have no idea how to study. So, your rant was actually kind of comforting in a weird way. Also, over the last couple of days I have watched so many of your vlogs. I really love them!

I'm a first year student currently and idk how much work experience i should have right now and how to get it. Also, would you say that it is worth completing 'irrelevant' work experience i.e. work experience which wont help you in the field you want to go into such as working in a bar etc

  • @ileftthegame2044

If you can get relevant experience in the field you want to go into then definitely take any opportunity - whether that be paid work in holidays, part-time work, internships etc. With bar work etc I would say definitely do that if you can't get paid work in the relevant field - it definitely still counts as work experience and shows future employers that you are responsible and can manage your time and so on (transferable skills are key!). I had several jobs/internships during uni - a couple of them were in the relevant field, but I also worked in a bar and had tutoring jobs as well. I graduated last year and I'm now working in the field I wanted to work in, and my managers have told me that having that extra work experience (as in the bar work) was great on my application because it showed I had a good work ethic and was used to employment situations. I know this is super long but I hope it helps! Good luck!

i like to think that any job you work gives you experience no matter what! any experience is good experience, i like to say. you can take the skills from that job and apply them to other areas in your life easily. for instance, im shooting to be a lawyer but ive realized just how much my old teaching job has taught me people skills, adaptational skills, and pure patience. if youre focused on getting your foot in the door however, youll find that internships alone will take you a long way. and take any networking opportunity you can!

I’ve never before had this much test anxiety and I honestly thought online tests would be much easier, but because I can just “close” the test, it’s so hard. Recently on a physics test that was super easy and I was very prepared for, I got a 20% because I simply freaked out and closed the testing tab 2 minutes into the test! In a classroom, I feel better seeing everyone around me also doing the test and I learn to cope with it rather than closing the tab after a freak out! Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, exams are not the most important thing in the world, but ugh, this is what is thrown at us, inspire of all the difficulties, and we have to (somehow) deal with it, so I totally understand your (and every single super-stressed, examined-to-be student reading this comment rn) approach. I have my final exams (something like A-Levels in the UK) in two weeks (they were postponed because of the coronavirus), so I can relate. Stressful times. But hey, we got this. It's gonna be okay. 💖

I’m in the same situation as they completely changed the way the exam is going to look a month before the exam, and I basically have to re make the exercises that took me all year to complete. And I also have 5 other exams to worry about that also have slightly changed.

I’m doing a Neuroscience degree, and ALL of my exams have turned into coursework (I’m one of those people that do really well in timed exams as opposed to long-term coursework). So basically, I have 15 000 words to write in June and 0 motivation to write ANY Not to mention, as I’m doing an integrated Masters course, my final (4th) year next year is 80% lab-work - so we’ll see how the pandemic fucks that up. AND if I had just chosen to do the BSc, then I would have gotten a guaranteed first due to our universities no-detriment policy, but because I’m doing a Masters degree nooooo

I did my first degree with OU and had home exams due to a health condition. An invigilator would rock up to my house with the paper in a sealed bag and have to cut it open in front of me. Crazy! But can totally relate to family milling around, and endless drinks/snacks. It takes a bit of getting used to but after a couple of years it became normal for me. Going back to sitting in an exam hall after 9 years was so weird! So I'll be havig online exams this year but I think I'm feeling chill about it, although I'm staying with family so no idea yet where I'm going to sit it!

100% agree with u about perfectionism when you have unlimited time, but then that all goes out the window when u are under timed conditions - so relatable. I think I prefer it in a timed exam where you are simply not allowed to be a perfectionist over every little sentence - gets the job done quicker.

As someone who’d entire uni experience was online (moved country after starting, was allowed as a distance student cause my uni has everything online anyways), I can tell y‘all that you’re stressing yourselves out a lot unnecessarily :) take a deep breath, set up a nice comfy place for your exam, block all your notifications and just... get into it. I write myself schedules so I can keep myself accountable and stay on track. It’s not the devil’s work, you get used to it really fast :)

I felt this entire video in my bones. I'm a first-year at Durham, and between being in a different timezone and having to work I managed to FORGET about an entire exam and they wouldn't let me submit it late so now I have a 0 for that exam... which was 100% of the module. Fun times.

I can relate to every single word. My online exams at Exeter where last week and it was just a long revision crazy slog. More so than usual because of the open book nature. Which sounds almost contradictory, but the whole perfectionism thing is real (given the opportunity). An essay that should take two hours ends up sucking up 8 hours.

Hey Jack, first of all your content is amazing and I have learn a lot from you. I'm going to be starting my Bsc in physics this September but I'm 20 as opposed to 18, I'm going to be starting 2 years late. I have gone through quite a bit especially in secondary school ( got bullied and had to re-sit my GCSE'S the following year). Will I be disadvantaged in terms of being able to socialize with others in 1st year? I'm worried that I'll be the old man in the corner kinda thing. Oh and good luck in your exams! You're going to smash them and get that first I'm sure :) Thanks

Try not to worry .....I'm an exam marker for ESOL, and given that your exam conditions are abnormal this year, and there could be distractions eg. Noise in the house, which mean that you (anyone) may not perform as well as under normal circumstances, the examiners are likely to be generous and "mark up" ie where there is doubt over what mark to give, they will be more generous. That is what we, as markers, are told to do. Hope this helps ☺
