That's true to a certain extent but unless you bring a quantum computer to the party nothing is going to "defeat" it. Whats interesting about the story is the prevention method that tries to limit the damage and protects itself from being encrypted so you can actually do a backup/restore. Not that i promote acronis or anything. It's just that is the idea behind it all if it works.

Constantly nagging users to upgrade both tricks clueless users into thinking they HAVE to, and pushes even smart users to pay to stop being nagged. Remember, randsomeware developers know users can and will revert to older system back-ups in some cases. For this reason randsomeware can be programmed to sleep for weeks before activating themselfs making your backups worthless.

@@GPlayerHD Lets say this scenario: -Daily backups -Downloaded ransomware Dec 1st and sleeping -Now infected today. Sure you can revert back to the backup before Dec 1st but you'd lose any files made between Dec 1st and time of infection. But luckily, you have a daily backup just before the infection, so what I would do is open that backup with a recovery software (not replacing the os yet) grab the files you need, then place that in the safe backup.

Oh I didn't know links were so incredibly dangerous... You really went into detail on the mechanics of how links automatically are the same as exes.

I've been using true image since like 2012/2013! Even before that, I would just constantly archive my data to an external drive that wasn't always connected, and take an "image" of my PC (a self made "factory restore DVD" if you will), so that when/if I got "infected" I could just restore said image, no matter HOW BAD it got "infected"! Because of this, I have never even bothered with "real time" protection... Only once in my life was I "infected", but it was "no big deal" thanks to my good backup and archiving processes! And no monthly fee >.>

I'm pretty sure malware authors could implement a way to corrupt any image backups that are saved locally, remove / disable access to your image restoration program, and block access from downloading / installing / restoring the image restoration program.

Don't forget that you can also enable Ransomware Protection in Windows Defender so it protects your personal folders from unwanted changes.

I mean.. they literally just showcased the backup function, something you can do yourself, no programs needed. And popular ransomwares have decryptors available for them already, and I feel like that's an important thing to know.

My current drive 4TB is about to die, and I have to make a complete disk clone that includes the OS and all the software such as Office 2019 Pro Plus, Adobe Photoshop, etc. Are there any extra steps for my case or just doing the typical steps from Acronis True Image Disk Cloning process? Also, can I do the disk clone that includes the system and all software from the USB port for the new drive instead of the SATA port? After the completion of the disk clone, do all I need is to swap my new drive clone disk with the current almost dying drive?

Well with 11tb, having a nas is really the only logical way to store it. At least that's what Linus says anyway. For me, I'd only really need to recover the boot drive, most everything else I can get back. If they don't have a backup limit though. Just ha e it upload the night before you go to work.
