    Even a virtual machine might not protect you from an infection. There are ways for malware to become virtual machine "aware" and escape the VM, then interacting with the host OS to infect it as well.

    Have linux on host, and have a hyper vm. Make sure there's no shared folder access. Someordinarygamers has some good videos on how to do this.

  • @cutietheturtle1449

    @cutietheturtle1449

    4 жыл бұрын

    It’s for the most part very rare if you configured your vm correctly (Turing off shared folders, guest additions in virtual box, copy paste in clipboard). In addition if your host machine uses a completely different OS from the host machine it’s even harder to break out. although it is not impossible, for most users they should be relatively fine. Most likely you have have to be doing something extremely stupid or be trying to find a virus to do this. Of course nothing is completely secure though, but for a lot of things common sense is usually applicable. If someone really wanted to experiment with stuff I would recommend getting a completely separate computer, download the viruses, then just disconnect it from any internet entirely.

    this is a late reply but: bitdefender would have blocked it anyway with the "site unreachable" message in chrome. It blocks the incoming/outgoing network traffic completely to suspicious sites. I think it actually stresses the cpu and network card a bit with this, but it's worth it. ( it has to check to at least layer 3 from 7 in the OSI modell in my opinion)

    or even worse, one time while i was personally testing antiviruses AVG acted like a virus itself, even after i uninstalled it and removed the program files adds kept poping up about AVG features with a better edition and to reinstall it, thats in 2014 and when the reset my computer function for 8.1 was used a lot, more concerned about antiviruses then the viruses themselves after that

    Kameron Swan. That's what ultimately turned me away from AVG. It had a good run of being a nice unobtrusive anti-virus but in just a few months out of the blue it slowly became clunky, bloated and very hostile toward the user. That's been my experience with every good anti-virus. They are good for a couple of years and then one day you wake up to see signs they are turning toward the dark side, a couple months later your shopping around for a new anti-virus.

    Sorry to say that but I think this video leaves a lot of things not covered or as missconceptions. First packing such a highly critical topic like malware into a video sponsored by one of the major companies in malware protection is questionable by itself. Second only using some utterly stupid sketchy sites to "test" out the protection is pretty useless. You did not even compare it to built in Windows defender to see if it actually detected more malicious stuff than defender. And also those might have been the easiest to detect malware programs to be found (hence the bad websites, unusable programs). Every free antivirus should block these. I would love to see some more professional malware programs used against this and other antivirus software. To me that video was more like an unreflected ad for bitdefender, than actually testing if you need an antivirus....

    +Stormraker I agree. I have used bitdefender trial before though when defender, and malwarebytes said it removed everything but didn’t. Bitdefender was the only one I could get to remove it, and of course this was more fishy and hard to remove because it came from a torrent

    This video was SPONSORED CONTENT. Linus is not going to step on the toes of a sponsor in this instance. Too much money involved. If he really cares about his community, he should set up and test the theories you put forward. Unfortunately, no one from Linus Media Group is going to see your comment here and act upon it. Which is a shame, because the information that could come out of such testing would be really valuable to me.

    I cant agree more, granted Linus has never said hes a security expert but I do feel most youtubes grasp of security is massively lacking, although I think when he got hacked the other year opened his eyes a bit more. It does annoy me though when people like Linus and Austin advertise anti-malware systems yet reactive security has been proven not to work 'as effectively' anymore and proactive is the way forward. Running a none administrator user would help massively, plus defender is rapidly becoming the top product in my eyes, plus its very well integrated into Windows. Hes right on some aspects, backups and updates are mandatory, but I am sorry bitdefender won't defend against anything if the attacker is smart and well resourced.

    I don't even have anything against sponsored content, at least LMG discloses it pretty obviously, but this video is posing BitDefender as the BEST antivirus without even comparing it to other programs. Of course doing a comparison where the sponsor might not come out on top or only by a small margin would not make any sense but then i would just recommend to just give it a general video about viruses and malware (maybe a techquickie) instead of this. But idk just my opinion

After few hours work then the PC install on its own few other programs, which connected to the windows root kit itself. Making my monitor and everything drunk (literaly) & including crashing/restarting constantly. It's actually hostile towards anyone other than people who only turn on their PC to browse facebook or whatever. It flagged so many false positives during an average week, that I actually significant time debugging why software randomly didn't work, or crashed, only to find out that it was BitDefender "quarantining" the executables. And these weren't sketchy executables, they were from perfectly tame, every-day software... Seriously fuck this piece of trash. Common sense is your best protection but Windows Defender is also pretty good these days. My philosophy is to be careful and just reformat if I mess up too badly. Most people don't reformat often enough anyway.

    I prefer a cleanup. saved so much time, i used to re-install windows like every month to keep it snappy, But i tinkered a lot! lol. Windows has been very nice since w7 though. i even upgraded from windows 7 to w10 and it has been running perfect for over 5 years without re-install :D but, monthly cleanups each taking 30 minutes or so.

    There is ZERO fucking possibility that Chrome is using 6GB of RAM by itself... You've got other tasks running in the background taking up resources. I watch KZread videos in 4k and it never exceeds more than 1GB

  • @SyncF

    Ryan You don’t know what you’re talking about. If you have more than 16Gb of RAM like me and others, yes Chrome will use more. A lot more and it increases exponentially, the more tabs you use, and depending on how taxing each tab is. Chrome uses hardware acceleration.

Still have another 4GB to spare And if Windows needs more RAM, then Windows gets more RAM. It's not like "oh Chrome uses 6GB my PC is full!"
