I Critically Review "the Worst Surfskate Movie"

Спорт

Most surfskate films released by the big brands like Carver and YOW clock in at around 3-5 minutes, but one man had the bold vision to create a 24 minute marathon of a film. Critical opinions ranged from "worst surfskate movie" to "Best surfskate video hands down". Okay, okay, I am my own harshest critic and the comments on the video itself are super supportive and almost downright inspiring... Nevertheless, I want to see surfskating pushing forward to the next level and gaining credibility in the world of board sports, so I do believe it is worth analyzing whether this film was a huge mistake or forgivable naïveté from a passionate but not yet polished surfskater/filmmaker. My goal with these reviews is to highlight the good stuff that the surfskate community might like to see more of, and point out the subtleties of the stuff that could be done better and why.
If content like this is of interest to you, you could consider heading over to my Patreon channel, The Surfskate Underground / surfskateunderground to become a supporter as that is where future surfskate movie reviews, advanced skills tutorials, surfskate head-to-head reviews, gear tier lists and other content that is designed for a more intermediate to advanced to obsessed audience will reside.

It is great that you review your own movie and highlight what you did right and what you did wrong. I feel like whatever you do for the first time, you can't expect it to be the "best thing ever". We learn from what we do and get better with experience and learn from the process. You made your first movie and you put it out there which is already a big accomplishment on its own! You put yourself out there and was vulnerable. I would say the only real "critique" I would have is that it is kind of a bit too long and would have cut it "faster" (yeah generation TikTok here hehehe). Looking forward to more content from you!

man, I think you're being too harsh on yourself, you're a pioneer in the sport and you wouldn't be where you are today if not for doing these things... Love the journey man ...

The hazards of being an optimistic person with grand visions is that you take big chances but also open yourself up to huge vulnerability. I invested so much of myself: time, energy, money into this project. Doing this critical review was actually helpful in my accepting it and being able to move forward. As I said in the video I learned a lot from the process, and accept it as part of what helped me grow and improve. And there are still some banger clips!

I really enjoyed this. Truthfully, only made it through half the original movie when I found it, but this is great. The context matters. In the end you are 💯% right, you are better for making the film. The only way to learn is to do. Sometimes we just have to put it out there to get something back. Getting tricks in the street is far more challenging than the park. A repeated trick isn't repeated if the spot changed. Every spot has it's challenges. The rock spot could and should be it's own film. I don't watch a lot of surf skate videos because I believe there is a lot to learn naturally and I don't want skate like everyone else. I definitely want to find my style and see what's capable. Appreciate what you did here Sir. Stay Rad and keep pushing surfskate.

I love the idea of the 5 to 7 minutes of Unconventional, cause I loved that movie 😊 But I agree that your new ones are insane though. I’m excited for your new patroon project 🙌🏽 big fan of you here

Instead I am thinking maybe a "best of" or greatest hits video with the top 3 clips from each movie.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer oh that’s a great idea! I love it! It’s also interesting to see your progression. From an outsider perspective, looking at how you evolved makes the journey even more tangible and profound, and gives depth to your actual accomplishments. At least in my eyes 🤩

Good on ya, Mark! It’s not easy to be critical of one’s self, but it’s a excellent way to improve 🤙✌️

I was thinking most of these clips were really good when I saw them. - this critical review feels like pandering to the 'bro' culture (where nothing is any good unless there is a risk of severe injury) which is probably why I longboard / surf skate instead - just enjoying the whole vibe over being some technical skate god. Your videos inspire me, and many others so don't do yourself down! so much!

I don’t think that was my intent, though I do feel that most surfskate content out there plays it a little too safe and too much on the lifestyle/vibes end of things. My critique was mostly intended to be on my editing decisions and being a bit too ambitious for my skill level. I am still proud of the work that went into it and a lot of the riding, and it definitely paved the way for me to start making content that I love. All part of the learning journey!

We're driving up to escape TX summer. Will be in Ottawa from July 9-13. Heading to try surfing in Halifax. Stopping in Toronto and Montreal too. Staying close to skateparks the whole trip. I recently bought a Solride Ray and put the bigger wheels on. Took it rolling in a 9 foot bowl and had a blast. I attribute your unconventional style as the inspiration for Solride product, but who knows. I like the hybrid aspect of big board carving and being able to ride backwards is nice. I definitely bought the Solride from your review.🎉 🎉🎉

@@jcs0009 I got good news and bad news, haha. The good news is that you’ll have lots of fun. The bad news is that there is a misconception that Canada is cold all the time - pretty much false aside from the far North. Bring clothes for high 90s, low 100s and humid in Ottawa and Montreal. Try river surfing in Montreal, great safe place with fewer death traps than most river waves. Halifax is beautiful but if you are there in July or August you may not get many waves. Usually not until the hurricane season in fall that you get much more than a little foamy beach break. But even still it is a fun city with lots of cool skate terrain.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer good to know we n the weather. That's hot. We went to Virginia Beach last summer and it was pretty humid but mostly didn't break 90. In Texas we don't cool down under 90 at night and will see indexes in 120. Hopefully Canada is a little better. I'm really just excited to skate new places and hear y'all talk fun french. Save my dates we'll take y'all out to eat?
