I Can't Get Enough of This Sketching Process!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I started experimenting with this sketching process about 3 years ago and I keep coming back to it. Very effective, fun and satisfying. This is not just for faces. Works for sketching any subject in just about any sketchbook.

I’ve been doing quick little portrait studies of the folks in the nursing home where I volunteer. They LOVE it! This will help fill out these little studies for them. Could use this technique for drawing ANYTHING! Thank you, once again!

That is so sweet! I love it. I have a real soft spot in my heart for the elderly, and imo we don't respect and treat them well in the US.

I know their character and their life experiences are all over their faces. I'd imaging observing and sketching their hands would also be a reflection of the person and their life.
Your tinted graphite and watersoluable charcoal would also work great. Just use a spritzer to keep them juicy. Thanks for sharing.
When I saw the white going on the paper I thought WOW! No way! Then it faded to calm. Excellent technique. Next time I am in town I will look for the brush.
Love this!!! Yes, more landscapes using this method would be great.
This brings back memories of the way I used to sketch on toned paper many years ago. Since I developed a tremor I really miss it.

@@zoeuphoria Many thanks for the encouragement. I can manage to create imagery digitally, but it's the feel of actual pen, brush and paper/canvas that I miss.
I started doing this recently as well when I was returning to anatomy studies and found myself not wanting to use graphite or charcoal but not wanting the unforgiving nature of jet black ink brushes, so I just started using a brush pen with dried up patches of gouache. Now I just do it on the regular, or over top of line. And it's a great way to get a lot more use out of dried up gouache that might not be ideal for something more serious but that would also be a waste to just wash off a palette and squeeze more from tubes just for the sake of some studies. Thick toned tan paper is probably my favorite thing to work on.
Love to see landscape sketching
Yes please ! Landscapes ! … and architectural, too ! Thanks muchly !
Thank you for your lesson. Lesson about scetching landscapes would be great
Landscape thumb nail would be fantastic. Your talent is great. I need to try this. Thanks
Yes, a landscape would be lovely!
What a pleasurable experience it was to see such talent in action. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
Landscape please, thanks for the video. I am really anxious to try gouache.
Landscape thumbnails are great but I actually love seeing you draw people for a change. I've done a kind of drawing with a brush before, but not often, and not on toned paper - it's really cool.
Yes, to landscape thumbnails using this sketching method. Thanks. Great video!
Yes please, more of this, in anything you want to with a little of what's going through your mind whilst drawing, it's truly superb.
Yes, please. Demo of this technique with landscapes. Thank you.
Your work is amazing!! Id love to see a landscape using this technique 😊
Love to see a landscape example.
i find this style of painting so intriguing. have to try it out for myself some time.
Thanks for the intro to a reservoir brush…. Will check that out! Reminded that drawing on a toned background it’s easy to use too much white accent
Would love to see this technique demonstrated with thumbnails, landscapes and plain air. Enjoy all your videos.
Love this. I'm trying to get back into art and recover my confidence lost since adolescence by not practising. Feel a bit intimidated by the (expensive) watercolours I bought and feel like I was always much more of a natural drawer anyway, so this might be exactly what I need to try.
Yes please, landscape and bird studies too would be good. Thanks
Brilliant! You truly are a fabulous artist!
Yes, landscapes, please!! I learn so much from watching you work in your videos. Thank you for making them!
Sure … please do companion tutorial of a landscape! U r just a wealth of information! I so enjoy your tutorials! Thanks for sharing😊
Yes landscape sketch tutorials please
Great technique/process! i've had those water-brushes for years and hadn't found a good way to use them. Thank you for your video ❤ hehe couple of hours later i went and dug my water-brushes out and tried your technique. It worked better than i was expecting. I already fashioned a tiny kit out of a pill box with black and white quache and made a small sketchbook out of coloured paper. Thanks again.😄
Thank you, I love this process and will definitively try it. Would love to see you do some landscape sketches.
Yes definitely please do a couple landscape sketches using the waterbrush process. I would love to see it, as I'm struggling with this in my own sketches. Thank you for your consideration in this.
wow i tried this and fell in love right away, thanks !
Love it. Yes, would like to see a landscape sketch.
Would really appreciate a video like this for landscapes! Landscapes are a weakness of mine I'd really like to improve on and I love this method as a way to ease into them with a new perspective
Very nice. Yes, please do some landscapes with this technique.
Loved it, Steve!

I just ordered 4 of them. I love your videos; I've been watching since I started with watercolors a couple of years ago. Your work is beautiful - what I aspire to. Thank you so much for all of them!!
You are a true master Steve, thank you for all your lessons.
A video about gouache would be great.
Would love to see a landscape sketch like this! Thank you Steve for the fun video.
You are so incredibly talented to make this look easy! Wow!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!
This was great! Such and inspirational and I definitely would love to see a landscape with this technique. Thanks Steve! 🙂
I am learning from your demonstrations. I draw and paint. This has given me the inspiration I need.
Leyendecker was one of a kind and sadly people don’t realize he trained Norman Rockwell
Can't wait to try this! Thank you.
Thats dazzling sir! Ive been absolutely intimidated with watercolors so ive avoided them. Im soaking up alot watching you. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us
I love this! Such a great idea!
I would sure be interested in landscapes with this technique. I have such a waterbrush laying around around, Not used it very much. But I've gotten into watercolours via my drawing hobby, and also been doing a couple of landscapes lately, so this is a good fit for what I'm experimenting with myself at the moment.
Both artists are go-to references for master studies for me. I love how dynamic they are with form, color, and stroke. And drawing with a brush is always a fun exercise.
Loved this technique and yes! Landscape thumbnails please :D
Great video like portraits
Yes please on the landscape demo! Excellent demo on this release. Thank you.
Thank you for posting this, more landscapes using this method would be great!
This is brilliant! I can’t believe I never thought of this!

You bet!
So amazing. Loving this sketching technique as well. I didn’t know they made water brushes with that fine a tip.
Love this, I'm definitely trying this tomorrow. 👍
I use fine liners on any medium-toned papers and get so excited when it's time for the highlights to make that drawing pop! Never occurred to me that I could do the same with a brush and WC, and it looks a lot harder!
I love this. I need to get back to my sketchbooks and try this. Thanks for the demo. 😍
So great! Second time watching this. Yes please to landscapes using this technique!
love watching you do the people, its so relaxing and I have a hard time with faces, so its always interesting and fun to see them take shape . Thanks for sharing it.
Brilliant❤️
I loved this video. Please do more! I think your portraits are so skilled and appear so easy.
Steve, Excellent portraits. Your videos always challenge me to try something out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the inspiration.
Excellent ... I have everything you used .... just never never used them like that. I certainly will be. Thank you so much.
Yes please for the landscape😊
yes please do some landscapes
Loved watching the sketch and paired with the music. This fellow looks like my Dad who passed away a few years ago. It was so lovely to see his visage slowly appear! ❤
Wow! So nice! Isn’t it great that no matter how long we’ve been producing drawings, there always seems to be some new, technique/approach, to learn about. Thank you Sir!
A great job
As always, learn so much from watching you work! Still using techniques from a nest demonstration! Thank you!
MARAVILLOSO. Muchas gracias!
Great video, I would love to see this process being used for landscapes. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful! I’m going to try this. Id love to see more thumbnails, landscapes and pieces like these. Thank you!
I’ve never seen this technique! You are so talented! Thank you for sharing this!
I love this.
Excellent 😊
I gave this a try and I love it! Thank you for sharing all your tips! They are fun, and I like the results, even though I'm not a watercolorist, and not strong on portraits. But this I can do!
This is a great method! It reminds me of my college life drawing class (fromMANY) years ago when we drew with neutral coloured pencil crayons on toned paper. I’m going to by a water brush for sure! Thank you so much!
You are so amazing with your drawing and painting skills. I could feel the connection to the man in my heart that you were drawing. This is how I know when a piece of art is really good. I always enjoy you and your videos. Thank you.
Wow, I am blown away! I love how you are using watercolor for sketching. What a brilliant idea.
OK...I've seen most of your videos. I think this one is my favorite! It would work fantastically for fashion illustration, I feel.
Thanks for posting this. Your posts are so inspiring and have really helped me on my watercolour journey
Thanks, love the effect I will definitely be trying this Derwent pen*
This is really interesting! Gouache is such a versatile medium 😊
